About Canal 7 Catamarca
Canal 7 Catamarca
Canal 7 Catamarca is the provincial public television channel of Catamarca, in northwestern Argentina, operated by Catamarca Radio y Televisión Sociedad del Estado, the provincial state media company. It broadcasts from San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca, the provincial capital, under the call sign LRK 471 TV. The channel's history falls into two distinct eras. Its predecessor, Catamarca Televisora Color, began regular transmissions on 24 June 1985 under Governor Ramón Saadi. The modern channel was then built on that inheritance: the state company was constituted in 2011, AFSCA Resolution 984 of 18 July 2012 adjudicated Canal 7, and regular transmissions as LRK 471 TV began on 24 April 2014. The channel joined digital terrestrial television on channel 27.2 on 25 August 2023.
The first era: Catamarca Televisora Color
Television owned by the province of Catamarca began on 24 June 1985, when, under the government of Ramón Saadi, Catamarca Televisora Color started regular transmissions. The date is still commemorated by the provincial media as the founding moment of Catamarca's public television — the day, as the channel's own anniversary coverage puts it, on which the province took a transcendental step in its media history with the birth of a medium that, under the name Canal 7, would become a fundamental reference for information, culture and entertainment for the people of Catamarca. For decades the channel functioned within the limits typical of small provincial state broadcasters, acting also as a relay for the national state channel and as the provincial government's production house, carrying events such as live football from the Catamarqueña league and daily coverage of the Fiesta Nacional e Internacional del Poncho, the province's great winter festival.
The first era was not smooth. Provincial legislative records from the 2000s describe a channel battered by economic and financial problems, equipment out of service, and a transmitting site at Cruz Negra that was looted, leaving the state channel at one point unable to emit its signal over the air; the building it occupied, inside the grounds of the former San Juan Bautista hospital, was declared structurally compromised after the earthquake of 7 September 2004. Those documented difficulties form the background against which the province decided, in the following decade, to rebuild its public television from the ground up rather than patch the old structure.
Re-foundation under Catamarca Radio y Televisión
The institutional turning point came with the creation of Catamarca Radio y Televisión Sociedad del Estado, the state company constituted in 2011 to run the province's public media — its corporate existence is a matter of national administrative record, which notes it as a provincial state society with its own legal personality, separate from the national administration. On 18 July 2012 the Federal Authority for Audiovisual Communication Services (AFSCA), by Resolution 984, adjudicated the Canal 7 service to the province — the authorisation under which the channel still operates, and which national regulations of 2015 cite as the title by which the government of Catamarca held its open analogue television authorisation. Under Governor Lucía Corpacci the province invested in the new enterprise, building new studios equipped with up-to-date technology; the channel's own institutional history credits that investment with laying the foundations for higher-quality local content production.
Regular transmissions of the rebuilt channel, with the call sign LRK 471 TV, began on 24 April 2014. The date is the one the provincial media celebrate: in 2025 Catamarca Radio y Televisión marked its eleventh anniversary, counting from the April 2014 start of the new era, with special programming revisiting its history and displaying the support of different sectors of the Catamarcan community amid public debate about the future of provincial public media.
Programming of the new era
From its 2014 launch, the channel built a schedule of live local cycles that its anniversary coverage singles out as having marked the life of the province. Its newscast Informe 16 kept audiences informed, while magazine programmes including Vos en el Medio, Hoy por la Tarde and El verano está aquí provided general-interest spaces in which, as the channel describes them, Catamarcan culture was always the protagonist. The pattern follows the classic provincial public channel model: a daily news service at the centre, surrounded by locally produced magazines covering provincial affairs, culture, festivals and community life, supplemented by content available through the national public media system. The Fiesta del Poncho — Catamarca's signature celebration — remains the kind of provincial event for which a state channel is the natural broadcaster of record.
The digital transition
Canal 7's passage to digital television was staged over years. National digital planning in 2015 assigned the provincial government its digital parameters as holder of the Resolution 984 authorisation, subject to presenting the technical documentation to enable the open digital terrestrial service under the national technical norms. The public arrival came on 25 August 2023, when the channel joined the Televisión Digital Abierta on channel 27.2, giving the provincial signal a place in the digital grid alongside its analogue inheritance. The date matters in the channel's own timeline: digital carriage in 2023 completed the technical modernisation begun with the new studios of the Corpacci era, and placed the provincial channel inside the same TDA platform through which Argentine audiences increasingly receive free-to-air television.
Place in the provincial media system
Catamarca is one of Argentina's smaller provinces by population, and its media market is correspondingly modest. In that context the provincial state channel occupies a position that commercial logic alone would not sustain: it is the television service whose remit is the whole province — its government information, its cultural life, its festivals and its football — rather than only the audiences advertisers most value. Academic listings of Argentine provincial state television count Catamarca Radio y Televisión, dated to 2014, among the seventeen open channels of the provincial states, one of the last created in the country and therefore one of the clearest products of the framework established by the 2009 Audiovisual Communication Services Law, under which AFSCA regularised and re-founded provincial services such as this one.
Studios and modernisation
The re-foundation was physical as well as legal. The channel's institutional history records that the government of Lucía Corpacci made a decided commitment to the development of Catamarca Radio y Televisión, materialised in the construction of new studios equipped with state-of-the-art technology. That investment, the channel states, not only strengthened the medium's infrastructure but laid the bases for local content production of higher quality. The contrast with the documented condition of the old service — looted repeater site, equipment out of service, a building declared compromised after the 2004 earthquake — is the point: the 2014 channel did not simply inherit the old one's plant but replaced it.
Anniversaries and public debate
In 2025 Catamarca Radio y Televisión celebrated the eleventh anniversary of its new era, in a context its own coverage described as marked by concern about the future of public media in the province. The workers commemorated the day by adapting the programming to revisit the company's history and to make visible the support of different sectors of the Catamarcan community — a defence of the institution mounted, characteristically, through the channel's own screen. The same anniversary coverage anchored the celebration in the longer story: forty years after Catamarca Televisora Color began in 1985, and eleven years after the rebuilt CRTV began operating in April 2014, the provincial channel presented itself as a legacy in the provincial media horizon, home to the live cycles that had marked the lives of its audience. That double commemoration — of the 1985 origin and the 2014 re-foundation — is the channel's identity in miniature.
Identity and continuity
Canal 7 Catamarca presents a double identity that its own commemorations hold together: heir to a signal born in 1985 as Catamarca Televisora Color, and operator of a service re-founded between 2011 and 2014 with a state company, a fresh adjudication and new studios. Both claims are documented, and together they explain the channel's place in the province — a public broadcaster whose continuity is institutional rather than merely technical, interrupted by the material crises of the 2000s and deliberately rebuilt in the 2010s. Its output remains what it has been since 1985 in intention: information, culture and entertainment made in Catamarca for the people of Catamarca, now delivered from modern studios and, since August 2023, through the digital terrestrial platform as well.
