About Canal 8 Mar del Plata

Canal 8 Mar del Plata

Canal 8 Mar del Plata is a Spanish-language free-to-air television station broadcasting on channel 8 from Mar del Plata in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. It is an affiliate of Telefe, carries Telefe programming from Buenos Aires alongside its own local production, and is operated by Grupo Neomedia. Its call sign is LRI 486 TV, and its website is mi8.com.ar, presented under the name Mi8. The station occupies a distinctive place in Argentine television history: it was the first television station born in Mar del Plata, it began broadcasting on 18 December 1960, and it was among the first television licences awarded to a city outside Buenos Aires.

That combination defines the station today. Viewers in Mar del Plata and across much of Buenos Aires Province, where the signal is carried through repeaters, receive national entertainment, fiction and news from Telefe together with newscasts and programmes made for the coastal city and its region. Ownership has changed repeatedly over more than six decades, from an independent local licence to state control, to a period as an owned Telefe station, and since 2022 to local ownership under Neomedia with a Telefe affiliation.

Overview

Canal 8 is an open, or free-to-air, channel, listed with a picture format of 1080i high-definition television, downscaled to 16:9 standard definition for the standard-resolution feed. Its analogue service is identified with VHF channel 8, and its licensing authority in recent records is ENACOM, the Argentine communications regulator. It broadcasts in Spanish from Mar del Plata, and its transmission area is given as Buenos Aires Province.

The station was known from 2018 to 2022 as Telefe Mar del Plata, reflecting a period when Telefe renamed its regional stations by city rather than by channel number. After the sale to Neomedia in July 2022 it returned to the Canal 8 name, under which it had been known to local audiences for most of its history. The Mi8 name used online draws on the same identity, presenting the television station and a digital news service for Mar del Plata under a single short brand.

Licence and launch

The licence for channel 8 in Mar del Plata was issued on 28 April 1958 by the federal government, by way of Decree-Law 6287, to Juan Llamazares, Alfredo López and Ildefonso Recade. It was one of the two first television stations awarded outside the city of Buenos Aires, the other being channel 7 at Mendoza. On 22 September 1958 the licensees formed a corporation with seven other investors, known as Difusora Marplatense, S.A., to manage the station.

The station signed on 18 December 1960 as the first station in the city, under the call sign LU 86 TV. It was the second station in interior Argentina to begin broadcasting, because channel 12 at Córdoba was already on the air while channel 7 at Mendoza was not. Its studios and original transmitter were located on Avenida Pedro Luro in Mar del Plata, at the corner with Hipólito Yrigoyen according to Spanish-language accounts of its history. The transmitter was moved to Sierra de los Padres two years later, improving coverage beyond the original site.

Nationalisation and return to private ownership

Channel 8 was nationalised on 8 October 1973, together with Buenos Aires channels 9, 11 and 13 and Mendoza channel 7, when, days before Juan Perón returned to the presidency, the government under interim president Raúl Alberto Lastiri declared that their licences would be deemed expired. State management took over at all five stations on 1 August 1974, after the prior owners sold the stations' related assets to the government.

Re-privatisation came in 1983. On 10 May 1983 the Federal Broadcasting Committee, COMFER, then the regulator of radio and television in Argentina, issued a call for bids for the channel 8 licence. Three companies presented bids, and on 28 October the government selected the bid of Emisora Arenales de Radiodifusión. The winner took control two weeks later. By 1985 the call sign had been changed to the present LRI 486 TV, the identifier under which the station is still listed.

Becoming part of Telefe

In 1989 Televisión Federal S.A. won the licence in the privatisation of channel 11 in Buenos Aires, the station that became Telefe. One of its shareholders, Televisoras Provinciales, was a consortium of interior stations that included Emisora Arenales, the Mar del Plata licence holder. That link placed Canal 8 inside the provincial group connected to Telefe from the network's creation.

Atlántida Comunicaciones acquired the Televisoras Provinciales share in Telefe in April 1998, as well as seven of the network's affiliated stations, including LRI 486 TV, and the purchase was completed that September. Emisora Arenales de Radiodifusión itself was merged into Compañía de Televisión del Atlántico S.A. in 1999. During the same period Canal 8 played a small role in Argentina's early digital television work: in February 1999 the Secretariat of Communications authorised the station to test the ATSC digital television system, then Argentina's original choice, using VHF channel 9.

On 30 November 1999 the Spanish company Telefónica announced that it would purchase the 70 percent of Atlántida it did not already own, including Telefe and seven affiliates. The deal also involved another Buenos Aires station and its repeaters, including channel 10, the other commercial station in Mar del Plata. Argentina's competition authority approved it in April 2000 on condition that one of the two Mar del Plata stations be sold. Telefónica kept Telefe and channel 8 and sold channel 10 as part of the Azul Televisión business.

Digital transition and the Telefe Mar del Plata years

Argentina changed its choice of digital television system in 2009 and selected ISDB-T instead of ATSC. On 30 August 2011 the Federal Authority for Audiovisual Communication Services, AFSCA, which had replaced COMFER, authorised channel 8 in Mar del Plata to begin ISDB-T test broadcasts on UHF channel 35. In March 2015 AFSCA assigned channel 20 for the station's regular digital broadcasts. Those steps moved the long-established VHF station into the digital terrestrial system used across Argentina.

Telefe itself changed owners during this period. Viacom announced its acquisition of Telefe and its affiliates on 3 November 2016, the purchase was made on 15 November, and ENACOM approved it on 30 March 2017. In November 2018 Telefe switched its stations to branding by city name instead of channel number, so Canal 8 became Telefe Mar del Plata. On 3 June 2019 it became the fourth Telefe regional station to begin high-definition production.

Sale to Neomedia and affiliate status

On 7 July 2022 Neomedia de Gestión announced that it would acquire Telefe Mar del Plata from Paramount, the successor company to Viacom. The change was carried out the next day. Under the agreement the station was retained as a Telefe affiliate, able to continue broadcasting Telefe programming, while Paramount, through Telefe, would serve as its national advertising representative. Reporting on the sale explained the division in similar terms: Telefe would continue to manage national advertising sales for Canal 8, while Neomedia would handle local sales, and the rest of the schedule beyond Telefe programmes would be made up of local productions.

The sale ended Telefe's direct ownership but not the relationship viewers see on screen. Canal 8 returned as the on-air name, a new logo began appearing on 8 July 2022, and the station continued as a Telefe affiliate. Spanish-language references list the owner as Grupo Neomedia and the operator as Neomedia de Gestión S.A., and the Mi8 website states that Mi8 is owned by Neomedia Gestión SA.

Local programming and news

In addition to Telefe programmes from Buenos Aires, Canal 8 originates its own programming for Mar del Plata and the surrounding area. Its best-documented local strand is news. Teleocho Informa is its local newscast, and Tiempo Zonal is a weekly news review whose long run was recognised by the local council in General Pueyrredón in 2013, when its 26 years on air were noted. Those programmes give the station a local editorial presence inside a schedule otherwise dominated by a national network, covering the city, its port, its tourism economy, municipal affairs and events across the surrounding part of Buenos Aires Province.

Non-news local production has included the sports programme Goles de Medianoche, whose name translates as Midnight Goals, and Video Pesca, a fishing programme reflecting the importance of the sea and the port to Mar del Plata life. Because titles and times rotate, viewers should check the station's current schedule and Mi8 website for the present line-up.

Coverage and repeaters

From its Mar del Plata base, the station is seen across a large part of Buenos Aires Province through a network of repeaters. Documented repeater locations include Benito Juárez on channel 9, Carlos Casares on channel 7, Chivilcoy on channel 3, Daireaux on channel 9, General Guido on channel 12, Laprida on channel 12 and Mar de Ajó on channel 6. Further repeaters have served Necochea on channel 2, Olavarría on channel 45, Pinamar on channel 7, San Carlos de Bolívar on channel 13, Tandil on channel 13 and Tres Arroyos on channel 7.

That pattern explains the station's regional role: it is not only a city channel, but a relay point through which Telefe programming and Mar del Plata news reach smaller cities and towns across the centre, south and Atlantic coast of the province. The move of the original transmitter to Sierra de los Padres in the early 1960s was an early step in the same direction.

Headquarters and digital presence

The station is headquartered at Av. Pedro Luro 2907, Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires Province, the address listed in references and, in shortened form, on its own website. Its studios have been associated with Avenida Pedro Luro since its beginnings. That continuity of place anchors Canal 8 in the city it was licensed to serve in 1958, despite repeated changes of owner, regulator and branding.

Online, the station operates as Mi8 at mi8.com.ar. Its homepage sections include local, police, national, entertainment, international and sports news, with stories focused heavily on Mar del Plata itself, including traffic, weather, education, tourism and the port. The site also links to the station's YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and X accounts. An account presented at the ETER communications school described how the station built a digital area from scratch, added a streaming proposal in 2023 and became the first traditional channel in the city to add that format, with streaming programmes aimed at specific niches.

Significance

Canal 8 matters for three reasons. First, it is a pioneer: licensed in 1958, on air from 18 December 1960 and the first station in its city, when Argentine television was still concentrated in Buenos Aires. Second, its ownership traces the wider history of Argentine broadcasting, from private pioneers to nationalisation in the 1970s, re-privatisation in the 1980s, consolidation inside Telefe in the 1990s, and Spanish, American and finally local ownership. Third, it remains, under Neomedia, an example of the affiliate model, combining a national schedule with local news, advertising and production made in Mar del Plata.

No verified audience figures are published in the sources used here, so its importance is best judged on longevity, coverage and continuity. More than six decades after Difusora Marplatense put LU 86 TV on the air, the same channel 8 frequency, now as LRI 486 TV and as Mi8 online, still gives Mar del Plata a television voice of its own.
