About Canal 9 Resistencia

Canal 9 Resistencia

Canal 9 Resistencia is a free-to-air television station serving Resistencia, the capital of Chaco Province in north-eastern Argentina, and the wider NEA region. Broadcasting under the call sign LT 81 TV, it began regular transmissions on 17 August 1966 and is one of the historic channels of the Argentine north-east. The station is owned by Grupo Linke, a family group with more than six decades in northern Argentina, and its main building stands at Avenida Alvear 50 in Resistencia. The group describes how the channel was recovered from an unfavourable situation in the early 2000s to regain its position as one of the strongest voices of the region, with modern technology, as a leading medium and a reference for regional identity across the north-east.

Canal 9 carries part of the programming of El Trece of Buenos Aires, which represents it commercially through Artear, alongside a substantial slate of its own production headed by Noticiero 9, its news service with three weekday editions. Its repeater network across Chaco, nine functioning repeaters of the ten authorised, carries the signal deep into the provincial interior, to Charata, Villa Ángela, Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña, Juan José Castelli and other cities of the Chaco plain.

Overview

The station broadcasts on VHF channel 9 from Resistencia, under ENACOM licence, and in digital terrestrial television on UHF channel 28 in high definition, an assignment made in 2015 that reference accounts note made it the only channel in the region broadcasting in that format at the time. Its owner is Grupo Linke, through the licensee TV Resistencia S.A. Its headquarters at Avenida Alvear 50 houses the operation for a service whose ambition, in its owner's words, is projection across the whole NEA, the Argentine north-east, a region of which Resistencia, joined by bridge to Corrientes across the Paraná River, is one of the twin capitals.

History

The station's origins lie in a 1964 tender. On 10 October 1964 the contracting process connected with Decree 9065 was put out to tender by the National Executive, with three possible company names in contention, Chaco TV S.A., Toba TV S.A. and the ultimate winner, TV Resistencia S.A., at the time in formation with a staff of fifteen. The licence began regular broadcasts on 17 August 1966 as LT 81 TV Canal 9 de Resistencia. The first director of Channel 9 was Luis Viola, one of the owners and directors of the historic newspaper El Territorio, and the technical team was made up of about eight people, headed by Emilio Couto. The detail survives because it captures the scale of early provincial television: a channel for a whole province run, at the start, by a team that could fit in one room.

Until October 2007 the station was an affiliate of Canal 9 of Buenos Aires, a relationship its channel number reflects. Its licence was renewed on 27 January 1983 by Decree 194, and in December 1985 the LT 81 licence was granted again to TV Resistencia S.A.I.F. The regulator authorised municipal repeaters in the mid-1980s, at Las Breñas on channel 8 and General Pinedo on channel 9 in May 1983, while a construction permit for a repeater at Santa Sylvina, granted in December 1983, was revoked in 2005 after expiring unbuilt. In the early 2000s, under the Linke group, the station was revitalised after a difficult period, investing in modern technology and re-establishing itself as a leading regional medium. Its later affiliation settled with Artear: part of its current programming relays content from Canal 13 of Buenos Aires, El Trece, which represents the station commercially.

Digital terrestrial television arrived with a distinction. On 26 February 2015 AFSCA, by Resolution 35, assigned Canal 9 the UHF frequency 28 for regular digital broadcasting in HD, making it, in reference accounts, the only channel of the region then emitting in that format. In 2023 the station's public weight was demonstrated when, after litigation over the contract, the Electoral Tribunal of Chaco reassigned to Canal 9, as the Grupo Linke offer, the production and transmission of the province's pre-electoral debates, a civic function that Argentine provinces entrust to broadcasters of established reach.

Ownership

Canal 9 belongs to Grupo Linke, a family group that presents itself as promoting the development and identity of northern Argentina for more than six decades, with interests that extend beyond media into agroindustry and entertainment. Within the group, Canal 9 is the flagship communication asset, complemented by Noticiero 9 as a multiplatform news brand and by 9Link, a digital distribution platform that amplifies the group's content, especially news and entertainment, across devices. Family ownership by a regional group, rather than by a Buenos Aires network, is central to the station's positioning as a voice of the north-east in its own right.

Programming

Part of the schedule relays El Trece content supplied through Artear's commercial representation, including network entertainment and films. The station's own production is broad for a provincial channel. Documented local programmes include Noticiero 9, its news service; Streamercitos, a children's programme; Receta Secreta, a cookery show; Siempre con lo Nuestro, a music programme whose title, Always With What Is Ours, announces its regional brief; Sports NEA, covering north-eastern sport; Veteve, a general interest programme; and La Otra Mirada, a weekend magazine. Published schedule and rate information has also shown local and regional titles such as Buen Día Nordeste in the morning and Tereré Jeré, named for the tereré culture of the Litoral, alongside network fixtures. The mix, children's television, cooking, chamamé-flavoured music, regional sport and news, is a deliberate portrait of NEA identity.

News operation

Noticiero 9 is the station's news service, with its main focus on Chaco Province. It currently has three editions on weekdays, at 13:00, 20:00 and midnight. The Grupo Linke describes Noticiero 9 as a multiplatform journalistic platform combining television and digital media, producing daily news editions with regional, national and international coverage and a digital portal carrying news in real time. In a province where the capital's politics, the cotton and agricultural economy, the Impenetrable region and the bridge-linked life of Resistencia and Corrientes generate a constant news agenda, the service functions as the principal television record of Chaco's public life, complemented by the station's role as broadcaster of the province's official electoral debates.

Distribution and reach

Canal 9 has ten authorised repeaters in Chaco Province, of which nine are recognised as functioning: channel 7 at Charata, channel 10 at General San Martín, channel 10 at Juan José Castelli, channel 12 at La Escondida, channel 7 at Presidencia de la Plaza, channel 4 at Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña, channel 3 at Tres Isletas, channel 5 at Villa Ángela and channel 73 at Villa Berthet, with the Santa Sylvina repeater out of service. That lattice gives the station genuine provincial coverage rather than a capital-only footprint. Its digital assignment on UHF 28 in HD, granted in 2015, and the group's 9Link digital distribution platform extend the signal to screens across the region and beyond.

Digital presence

The group's digital strategy is explicit: 9Link is described by Grupo Linke as a digital distribution platform that amplifies the content produced by the group, especially news and entertainment, allowing access on multiple devices and bringing Canal 9's signal and content to a broader and more diverse audience, while the Noticiero 9 portal provides real-time news. The station's earlier web identity passed through diario21.tv, an address that became the subject of court proceedings in the 2020s when a departing manager took the channel's website and social passwords into a rival venture, litigation that illustrates how valuable a provincial station's digital assets have become.

Audience and significance

Canal 9 Resistencia is significant as the senior television institution of Chaco and one of the defining media of the Argentine north-east. Founded in 1966 by a fifteen-person licensee company, directed first by a newspaper proprietor, affiliated for four decades with the Buenos Aires channel of the same number, then rebuilt by a regional family group into an HD pioneer for its region and the trusted broadcaster of its province's electoral debates, its history tracks the whole arc of interior television. In a region whose identity, Guaraní-inflected, riverine and agricultural, is distinct from that of Buenos Aires, the station's stated mission as a reference for regional identity is not a slogan but a description of the role it has played since 1966.

Canal 9 today

Today Canal 9 broadcasts from Avenida Alvear 50 in Resistencia as part of Grupo Linke, relaying El Trece programming, producing Noticiero 9 and its local slate, and reaching Chaco through its repeater network and digital platforms. Nearly sixty years after its eight-person technical team first put it on air, it remains one of the strongest media voices of north-eastern Argentina.
