About Canal U Córdoba

Canal U Córdoba

Canal U Córdoba is an Argentine free-to-air digital terrestrial television channel based in the city of Córdoba, in Córdoba Province, and operated by SRT Media, the radio and television services of the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, known in English as the National University of Córdoba. It is the university signal of that group: a channel whose stated purpose is to reflect, with diversity, the different areas of university life in Córdoba, including local science and technology. Listings describe its programming as documentaries and series, its area as part of Córdoba Province and surrounding areas, and its format as 1080i HDTV downscaled to 16:9 576i.

Canal U began under that name on 9 April 2018, replacing the digital news channel Cba24N, which had occupied the same university digital capacity since 1 June 2011. It inherited the studios, transmission plant and digital position of a 24-hour local news service, and was then reconverted, in the centenary year of the University Reform of 1918, into what the university described at launch as a great university showcase.

Overview

Canal U is one of two television services of the SRT group, alongside the historic Canal 10 Córdoba. The group also operates Radio Universidad on AM 580, the FM 102.3 station now branded Más que música, and the news website that still carries the Cba24N name. All share the same base in the Marqués de Sobremonte neighbourhood of Córdoba, at Fray Miguel de Mojica 1600. Canal U is therefore not a stand-alone commercial station. It is the digital-native second television outlet of a university public media system, created to carry university, scientific and cultural programming as its main purpose, something the generalist Canal 10 could only do in limited slots.

The channel retransmits part of the programming of other public services, including Televisión Pública, Canal Encuentro and DeporTV from Argentina, and Canal Institucional from Colombia, alongside its own university-produced content. No separate official website for Canal U was listed in the seed record for this profile, and its public presence has generally been presented through the wider SRT and Cba24N digital operation.

History

The signal's first life was as a news channel. Cba24N began its programming on 1 June 2011 at 20:00, launched by the SRT as a digital news service. Accounts describe it as the first news channel of the Argentine interior on digital open television, broadcasting on channel 31 through a digital decoder. It was produced from the Canal 10 plant and linked by microwave to the Arsat antenna on Cerro Mogote.

Its newsroom mixed long-serving SRT professionals with younger journalists from alternative, community and neighbourhood media trained at the university. Through an agreement with the School of Information Sciences, students did practice and internships there. It also retransmitted DeporTV, Televisión Pública Argentina and CN23. The website cba24n.com.ar appeared the same day, outlived the television news channel, and continues as the SRT news portal.

After more than six years, Cba24N ended its transmissions on 9 April 2018 at 10:59 local time and was replaced by Canal U. The change was made as the centenary of the University Reform was being marked, and the new channel debuted with programming oriented to the activity of the National University of Córdoba. A university notice described the reconversion as creating a large university showcase, and Canal U as the country's first digital university channel. That was the university's launch framing: Canal 10 had been a university station since the 1960s, so the novelty lay in a dedicated digital university signal.

Ownership and governance: SRT and the university

Canal U is owned through SRT Media, formally the Servicios de Radio y Televisión de la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba S.A. Group listings record the shareholding as 99.41 per cent held by the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba and 0.59 per cent held by the Municipality of Bell Ville as minority shareholder. Institutionally the channel depends on the university, while commercially the SRT company competes with other Córdoba audiovisual media in selling advertising and services.

The SRT's origins predate digital television by more than half a century. On 23 April 1958 the local branch of Radio Splendid was transferred to the university, becoming LW1 Radio Universidad, whose first transmission followed on 27 April 1958. Canal 10 was inaugurated on 11 May 1962, formally giving rise to the SRT multimedia complex. A second radio service, FM 102.3, was added on 28 May 1979. Until 1972 the media operated directly under the university; legal requirements for selling advertising then led to their constitution as a sociedad anónima on 22 December 1972. Cba24N in 2011, and Canal U in 2018, took the group to five outlets: two television channels, two radio stations and a news portal.

The university behind the channel

The Universidad Nacional de Córdoba was founded on 19 June 1613, making it the oldest university in Argentina and one of the first in the Americas, with origins in the Jesuit Colegio Máximo. In 1918 Córdoba was the scene of the University Reform, a student movement that spread across Latin America and championed autonomy, student participation in governance, freedom of teaching and commitment to society beyond the university's walls. That last principle, often described as extension, is the intellectual basis of Canal U.

The launch in the Reform's centenary year was therefore symbolic as well as practical. A notice from the university's Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities described the new channel as a proposal concentrated on the dissemination of university, scientific and cultural content, with an extensionist and journalistic character: a free, public, university-run screen for knowledge produced in Córdoba, open to viewers who might never enter a faculty building.

Programming

At launch, the university said Canal U would include entertainment, art, information, current affairs, science, life stories and citizen information. In practice, reference listings summarise the channel as documentaries and series, and the best-documented part of its schedule is its university and faculty production. The programmes documented for its early seasons are the most reliable guide to the kind of television it was created to carry.

Faculty production was built in from the start. One early example was Alfilo, from the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities, which joined Canal U on 11 June 2018 as a window on the current affairs and critical knowledge generated by that faculty. It was a fortnightly 24-minute programme in three eight-minute blocks — En la Facu, Historias y Personajes and Divulgación — covering institutional activities, faculty history, and social sciences and humanities work, produced by the faculty's communication and educational technology areas, shown Mondays at 20:00 with repeats Fridays and Sundays at 16:00, and also online. The rest of the schedule combined such programmes with retransmitted public content and documentaries and series: slower, reusable educational content, much of it made inside the university's faculties.

Science and academic production

Science communication was the most clearly documented strand of Canal U's programming when it launched its 2019 season. Four programmes were listed in its science and technology output. Epsilonn was co-produced by the SRT and the university's Faculty of Astronomy, Mathematics, Physics and Computing, known as FAMAF. Tecnociencia 3D came from the Faculty of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences and disseminated that faculty's research, projects and news. Átomos was a public communication of science programme made by the SRT with the university's Secretariat of Science and Technology. Me Gusta dealt with technology and social networks, covering innovation, study, entrepreneurship and collaboration in Córdoba's technology-based ventures, made by the SRT in connection with areas of the university and the city.

Each programme drew on a different faculty or central office as its knowledge source, while the SRT supplied studios, editing and transmission — giving research groups a regular public outlet of their own.

News legacy and student production

Although Canal U itself is not a news channel, it cannot be separated from its news inheritance. The Cba24N years established this signal's digital routines, web newsroom and student internships, continuing the SRT pattern of training Córdoba journalists alongside veteran Canal 10 and Radio Universidad staff. SRT archival material described the news-era channel as carrying more than fourteen and a half hours of daily information — a description of Cba24N, not of Canal U's later schedule.

When the television news signal closed in 2018, the news brand did not disappear. The cba24n.com.ar website remained in operation as the SRT's digital news portal, and the group continued to list Cba24N as its web medium. Daily news for the group moved primarily to the portal, Canal 10 and the radios, while the dedicated digital television frequency was given over to the university mission.

Distribution and reach

Canal U is a digital terrestrial channel, part of Argentina's Televisión Digital Abierta, or TDA, system. Argentina created that system by decree on 31 August 2009, adopting ISDB-T in its Brazilian variant, ISDB-Tb. The Audiovisual Communication Services Law of October 2009 reserved, in each locality with a national university headquarters, a university open television frequency, with possible additional frequencies for educational, scientific, cultural or research purposes. Academic accounts note that for over fifty years the university system had created only two television signals — Canal 10 in Córdoba and Canal 10 in Tucumán — whereas after 2009 more than ten university channels came on air. Cba24N, and then Canal U, belonged to that second wave.

In Córdoba, launch material in 2018 said Canal U could be seen on channel 5 of the Cablevisión Digital grid and on 30.2 and 31.2 of the TDA. The SRT media table lists Canal U on 30.2 on provincial digital terrestrial television, alongside Canal 10 on 30.1, reflecting its place as the second service in the SRT digital multiplex. The predecessor had originally been associated with channel 31 on a digital decoder. Channel positions change over time and by operator, so viewers should check the current SRT grid. Coverage is provincial rather than national: listings give its transmission area as Córdoba Province, visible in part of the province and neighbouring areas.

Digital presence

Canal U's digital life has been handled mainly at group level. In October 2018 the SRT launched the SRT Play app, offering news notices, daily grids and live Canal 10 and Canal U content, plus live Radio Universidad and FM Más que música. Canal U programmes also circulated through faculty websites, institutional video channels and social accounts, as Alfilo shows, with broadcast as the primary window and online video as the catch-up route.

Audience and significance

No reliable public audience figures specific to Canal U are asserted here: consistent measurement for a provincial TDA subchannel is not part of the verified record. Its audience is Córdoba's university community and the wider provincial public interested in science and culture, and its value lies in presence and service, not ratings competition.

Its significance is threefold. Digital multiplexing let a group that for decades had one television channel run a second, specialised signal. The same frequency served first as a pioneering provincial digital news channel and then, from 2018, as a dedicated university showcase, with news surviving online. And it belongs to the small group of Argentine channels owned by a public university and rooted in the 1918 Reform tradition of extension — the university returning knowledge and culture directly to the society that funds it.
