About Capital

Capital is one of the biggest names in British commercial radio — a national network of contemporary hit-music stations owned by Global, anchored by its legendary London flagship on 95.8 FM. Since 1973 it has been the sound of the capital's pop life, from its pioneering days as Britain's first music-based commercial station to its current incarnation as a UK-wide brand fronted by one of the most famous breakfast shows in the country. With its Summertime Ball and Jingle Bell Ball concerts, Capital is as much a live-events powerhouse as a radio station.

History and Launch

Capital Radio launched at 5.00 am on 16 October 1973, a week after LBC, as one of Britain's first two licensed commercial radio stations. Where LBC was designated "news and information", Capital's licence was for "general entertainment" — and it became Britain's first music-based, legally licensed independent local radio station, serving Greater London. The opening greeting was delivered by founding chairman Richard Attenborough — who had reportedly put his art collection up as security for the first month's payroll after a brush with bankruptcy in the run-up to launch — followed by the first show, presented by David Symonds.

Capital quickly found its footing. In 1974 it shifted from a general entertainment mix of drama, features and light music to a pop-music format, and its audience soared. In 1988 it split into two services: 95.8 Capital FM and Capital Gold on AM. The Capital Radio Group expanded aggressively through the 1990s, buying stations across the UK and acquiring the troubled alternative station XFM in 1998. In 2005 Capital merged with the GWR Group to form GCap Media; in June 2008 Global Radio completed a £375 million takeover of GCap, bringing Capital into the Global family. In January 2011 the Galaxy network of stations was rebranded as Capital, creating the national Capital FM network — one of the defining consolidations of modern British commercial radio.

Ownership

Capital is owned and operated by Global Media & Entertainment, Britain's largest commercial radio group, founded by Ashley Tabor. Global's portfolio also includes Heart, LBC, Smooth, Radio X, Gold, Classic FM, Capital XTRA and Capital Dance. The network is run from Global's headquarters at Leicester Square in London, where all networked programming is produced. Two stations — Capital Scotland and Capital South Wales — operate under brand licences held by Communicorp.

Format and Programming

Capital's format is contemporary hit radio: the biggest chart hits and recurrent favourites, aimed principally at 15-to-34-year-olds, delivered with high-energy presentation, celebrity interviews and interactive features. Since 2019 the breakfast show has been fully national, with the rest of the schedule also networked from London; only Scotland and Wales retain dedicated local programming under Global's nations strategy. The station's imaging — created by production company Reelworld and Global's in-house team — is among the most polished in British radio. Capital is also a major force in live music: the Capital Summertime Ball, held each June at Wembley Stadium, and Capital's Jingle Bell Ball each December are among the biggest pop concerts in the British calendar, featuring the world's biggest stars.

Flagship Shows and Presenters

Capital Breakfast is the network's flagship and one of the most famous morning shows in British radio history. Its lineage runs from Kenny Everett in the 1970s through Graham Dene and Mike Smith to Chris Tarrant, who hosted it from 1987 to 2004, then Johnny Vaughan (2004–2011), Dave Berry (2012–2017) and Roman Kemp (2017–2024). Since 8 April 2024 it has been presented by Jordan North — who joined from BBC Radio 1 — alongside Chris Stark and Siân Welby, broadcasting weekdays from 6 to 10 am across the UK. The trio launched a spin-off visual podcast, Capital Breakfast: After the Show, Show!, in May 2025. The wider schedule features some of commercial radio's biggest names across daytime, drivetime and weekend slots, with specialist evening shows covering new music and dance.

Broadcast Area and Frequencies

Capital is a national network. Its London flagship, Capital London, broadcasts on 95.8 FM; regional stations carry the network across England, Scotland and Wales on local FM frequencies and DAB. The network is available nationally on DAB digital radio, on digital television platforms, on smart speakers and worldwide through Global Player, Global's streaming app. The London FM licence — one of the most valuable in British radio — has been the foundation of the brand since 1988.

Audience and Ratings

Capital is consistently among the most-listened-to commercial radio networks in the UK, with a weekly audience measured in the millions across its national RAJAR reporting. Its strength lies in the commercially coveted 15–34 demographic, where it competes directly with BBC Radio 1 for young listeners. The breakfast show is one of the biggest commercial morning programmes in the country, and the network's large, young, engaged audience makes it one of the most important platforms for record labels launching new artists — a Capital playlist addition can still break a single nationally.

Digital and Streaming

Global Player is the digital home of Capital, offering live radio, catch-up, podcasts and video. The station's social media and YouTube channels command enormous followings, built on celebrity interviews, Summertime Ball performances and viral breakfast-show moments. Capital has embraced visual-first content, exemplified by the After the Show, Show! video podcast, and its events are streamed and clipped extensively online. Sister digital brands Capital XTRA — playing hip-hop, grime and R&B — and Capital Dance extend the Capital name into specialist genres.

Cultural Impact

Capital's cultural footprint is huge. As Britain's first commercial pop station it proved that advertising-funded radio could out-entertain the BBC, forcing the corporation to sharpen its own pop output. Its charity single campaigns, its Help a London Child (now part of Global's Make Some Noise) fundraising, and its Wembley concerts have made it part of national life. The Summertime Ball, in particular, has become a rite of passage for British pop fans — a single day each summer when the biggest names in global music play one stage in London. For five decades, "Capital" has been shorthand for the sound of young London.

Sister Stations

Within Global, Capital sits alongside Heart (the UK's biggest commercial radio brand), LBC (news and talk), Smooth Radio, Radio X, Gold, Classic FM, Capital XTRA, Capital Dance and a portfolio of DAB spin-offs. The group shares presenters, events infrastructure and the Global Player platform across its brands, and its annual Make Some Noise charity day unites them all.

Recent Developments

The network's biggest recent story has unquestionably been the relaunch of its breakfast show: Jordan North's arrival from BBC Radio 1 in April 2024, joining Chris Stark and Siân Welby, marked one of the highest-profile presenter moves in recent British radio history and was backed by a major nationwide advertising campaign. In February 2025 Global adopted a new "nations strategy" for drivetime programming, with only Scotland and Wales retaining local shows. The station celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023 with a podcast series voiced by David Symonds, the man who presented its first-ever show — a reminder that the station Richard Attenborough launched on a shoestring in 1973 is now one of the defining brands of British media, still setting the agenda for youth broadcasting nationwide.
