About CarDekho
CarDekho is India's leading automotive digital marketplace, headquartered in Jaipur, Rajasthan, and available at cardekho.com. The flagship portal of the CarDekho Group, legally Girnar Software Private Limited, it offers new and used car listings, detailed specifications and comparisons, expert reviews, automotive news, and services spanning insurance, financing, and vehicle servicing. Founded in 2008 by brothers Amit Jain and Anurag Jain after a frustrating visit to the Delhi Auto Expo, CarDekho grew from a garage-coded website into a unicorn valued business that has digitised large parts of India's automotive retail ecosystem.
The Garage Origin: A Frustrating Trip to the Auto Expo
The CarDekho story begins with a bad experience at the 2008 Delhi Auto Expo. Amit and Anurag Jain, both graduates of IIT Delhi, had returned to Jaipur after their father's death and were running a small software outsourcing company called GirnarSoft from their garage. When they went to the Auto Expo to buy a car, they came back frustrated: no website existed where they could compare prices, features, or specifications, and the entire car-buying process felt opaque. Amit later described the experience as painful. So the brothers built what they needed themselves, coding a website that put car information in one place. That website was CarDekho.
The timing worked in their favour. Smartphones were beginning to reach smaller towns, and people outside the metros suddenly had the same access to information as those in Delhi or Mumbai. CarDekho filled a gap that nobody else was filling, and traffic arrived without the company spending a rupee on advertising. The foundation stone of CarDekho.com was laid in March 2008 as an initiative to provide quality information in a quality environment about one of the biggest purchases a consumer makes in a lifetime.
GirnarSoft: From Outsourcing Firm to Auto Ecosystem
The parent entity, Girnar Software Private Limited, was established in 2007 as a software outsourcing firm by the Jain brothers, both IIT Delhi alumni. The brothers initially operated the business from Jaipur, taking on technology services for various clients. The launch of CarDekho.com in 2008 marked the pivot from services to products, and the flagship portal soon eclipsed the outsourcing business that had spawned it.
The early years were not smooth. In 2009 the firm nearly went bankrupt following a major financial loss in the stock market. The founders responded by pivoting to focus on organic growth, doubling down on the portal rather than chasing funded expansion. The discipline paid off: by 2012 the platform had reached 25 million monthly visitors without any institutional funding, an extraordinary achievement for a bootstrapped startup operating from Jaipur rather than Bengaluru or Mumbai.
Funding: The Road to Unicorn Status
CarDekho's first institutional funding arrived in 2013, when Sequoia Capital invested at a valuation of around Rs 250 crore. A Series B round in January 2015 raised more than Rs 300 crore from two Hong Kong-based investors alongside existing investor Sequoia, valuing the group at over Rs 1,800 crore. That same month, in a first-of-its-kind partnership in the Indian auto space, Ratan Tata, chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, made a personal investment in the company and agreed to advise it as required. The company also announced an investment from HDFC Bank, the first time a top Indian bank had partnered with an auto portal at that level.
Subsequent rounds brought in Google's growth fund CapitalG (then Google Capital), Tybourne Capital, Hillhouse Capital, Times Internet, and LeapFrog Investments, among others. The company achieved unicorn status in 2021 following a major funding round, cementing its position among India's most valuable consumer internet companies. According to industry tracker Inc42, CarDekho has raised more than $752 million across fifteen funding rounds, with the most recent round recorded in December 2024. Total reported funding places it among the best-capitalised auto-tech companies in the world.
The Portfolio: More Than a Website
CarDekho.com is the flagship, but the group operates a portfolio of automotive platforms. BikeDekho.com covers the two-wheeler market with the same model of listings, comparisons, reviews, and news. Gaadi.com and ZigWheels.com, both acquired by the group, extended its reach in used-car listings and automotive editorial content respectively. PowerDrift, the automotive video content brand, made the group the largest automotive video content player in India, with more than three million YouTube subscribers. InsuranceDekho distributes vehicle insurance, and Revv, a shared-mobility platform, added car-sharing to the group's offerings.
This portfolio strategy means the group touches the consumer at multiple points of the vehicle ownership journey, from researching a new car on CarDekho, to comparing bikes on BikeDekho, to watching reviews on PowerDrift, to buying insurance through InsuranceDekho. The group describes itself as aggressively pursuing a vision to become the largest personal mobility player in its markets.
Used Cars, Insurance and Finance: The Full Stack
Beyond listings and content, CarDekho has built a full stack of transaction and service businesses. CarDekho Gaadi stores serve as one-stop destinations for customers looking to sell pre-owned cars, while CarDekho Gaadi Trust Mark Stores cater to buyers of certified pre-owned cars. These physical retail outlets bridge the gap between the digital marketplace and the trust-intensive business of buying a used car, offering inspection, certification, and financing under one roof.
The group also provides vehicle financing and insurance distribution, embedding financial services into the car-buying journey. By combining content, commerce, and financial services, CarDekho captures value across the entire transaction rather than relying solely on advertising revenue from listings. This full-stack approach has become the template for auto marketplaces globally, and CarDekho was among its earliest and most complete practitioners in India.
Content Engine: Reviews, Videos and News
Content has always been central to CarDekho's model. The portal publishes detailed specifications, variant-wise comparisons, expert reviews, and automotive news, giving buyers the information the founders themselves could not find in 2008. The group's video operations, led by PowerDrift and CarDekho's own channels, produce reviews, comparison tests, and features that reach millions of viewers. The company claims to be the largest consumer-facing digital destination in the Indian auto space, with around 50 million monthly unique visitors, and the largest auto social media platform in the country.
This content engine serves a dual purpose: it attracts the audience that feeds the marketplace, and it generates the engagement data that powers personalisation. The company's technology investments in machine learning and artificial intelligence have been aimed at identifying the needs of individual users and providing the most suitable options at the right time, personalising the online experience of every individual in the auto space.
Going International
CarDekho has expanded beyond India into Southeast Asia and the Middle East, with operations in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines alongside its home market. The international business, led by a dedicated president and CEO for international markets, adapts the group's marketplace and content model to local automotive ecosystems. This expansion reflects the founders' ambition, stated early in the company's funded journey, to build a multi-billion-dollar company with a global footprint.
The international foray also diversifies the group's revenue base and gives it a playbook for entering emerging markets where car ownership is rising and digital automotive information remains fragmented, the same conditions that made CarDekho successful in India.
Leadership and Culture
Amit Jain serves as co-founder and CEO, with Anurag Jain as co-founder and COO. Amit Jain has become one of the most recognisable faces of the Indian startup ecosystem, appearing as an investor on Shark Tank India, where he has been described as among the wealthiest panellists. The brothers' journey from a Jaipur garage to the unicorn club is frequently cited as proof that world-class technology companies can be built outside India's traditional startup hubs.
The group's workforce runs into the thousands, with figures cited in company profiles ranging from over a thousand core employees to more than six thousand across the group including its retail and services operations. The company's revenue reached Rs 2,794.9 crore in FY25, an increase of 16.8 percent from Rs 2,392.8 crore in FY24, according to Inc42, making it one of the largest consumer internet businesses in India by revenue.
CarDekho Today and the Road Ahead
Today CarDekho Group stands as India's dominant automotive technology company, spanning new and used vehicle marketplaces, content, video, insurance, financing, and shared mobility. Its portals remain the first stop for millions of Indian car buyers researching their next purchase, and its Gaadi retail network has brought the brand into the physical world of used-car transactions. The company's FY25 revenue growth of nearly 17 percent suggests a business that continues to expand even as it matures.
Looking ahead, the group's challenges include deepening its penetration of the used-car and financing markets, defending its content leadership against global platforms and social media, and executing its international expansion. But with a portfolio that covers the full personal-mobility lifecycle, a brand built over seventeen years, and the financial backing of some of the world's largest investors, CarDekho remains the company to beat in Indian auto tech, a remarkable outcome for a website coded in a Jaipur garage because two brothers could not find a decent car comparison online.
