About Cartoonito Deutschland
Cartoonito Deutschland
Cartoonito Deutschland is a German-language pay-television children's channel operated by Warner Bros. Discovery from Munich, aimed at preschool viewers aged roughly two to six. The channel has broadcast under the Cartoonito name since 18 March 2023, when it replaced Boomerang in the German-speaking market. Boomerang Germany itself had been on air since 1 June 2006 as a spin-off of Cartoon Network, showing classic animated series from the Warner Bros., Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Hanna-Barbera archives. The rebrand to Cartoonito refocused the service on Warner Bros. Discovery's global preschool brand.
Overview
Cartoonito is Warner Bros. Discovery's international preschool brand, positioned as a gentle, educational entertainment offering for the youngest television viewers. The German feed broadcasts in German (with English continuity in some neighbouring markets served by the same Central and Eastern European feed) in SD (576i) and HD (1080i), and is distributed via DVB-C cable, DVB-S2 satellite and IPTV as an encrypted pay-TV service.
The channel's broadcast area extends beyond Germany to Austria and Switzerland, and the underlying Central and Eastern European feed serves a wide region including Benelux, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, the Balkans, the Baltic states and parts of the CIS. The German operation is headquartered in Munich, where Warner Bros. Discovery's German television business is based.
History
As Boomerang (2006–2023)
Cartoon Network's parent company launched Boomerang as a spin-off channel dedicated to classic cartoons, drawing on the deep animation libraries of Warner Bros., MGM and Hanna-Barbera — the home of Tom and Jerry, Scooby-Doo, the Flintstones, the Jetsons, Yogi Bear and the Pink Panther. International versions followed in many markets, including the United Kingdom, Poland, Australia, France, Brazil and Eastern Europe.
The German version launched on 1 June 2006. It was a pay-TV service from the start, carried in the digital packages of Vodafone Kabel Deutschland, KabelKiosk and Unitymedia on cable, via satellite through Arena and, from 1 September 2007, through Premiere Star. After Premiere became Sky Deutschland, the channel was available in the Sky Welt Extra package. It was also distributed in Switzerland from April 2007 via Cablecom and in Austria. Mobile distribution via Vodafone live! and T-Mobile's mobile TV products extended its reach to handsets.
An HD simulcast, Boomerang HD, launched on 3 December 2013 on Vodafone Kabel Deutschland, Telekom Entertain and Teleclub in Switzerland. A worldwide redesign with a new logo was rolled out in the German-speaking market on 16 February 2015.
A structural change came on 1 October 2018, when the dedicated German Boomerang feed was discontinued and replaced by the pan-regional Boomerang Central and Eastern Europe feed. In parallel, Warner Bros. Discovery had been developing Cartoonito as a preschool programming block: it first appeared in Germany in September 2011 as a morning and evening block on kabel eins, sixx and Boomerang, ran until 2014, and returned on 1 September 2022 with the new US design, airing daily between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.
As Cartoonito (since 2023)
On 18 March 2023, Boomerang was discontinued and fully replaced by Cartoonito as a standalone channel. The launch was marked with a nine-day Batwheels marathon. The rebrand aligned the German-speaking market with Warner Bros. Discovery's global strategy of establishing Cartoonito as its dedicated preschool channel brand, alongside the main Cartoon Network service for older children.
Programming
As Cartoonito, the channel targets children aged two to six with gentle animated series, many of them preschool-oriented. Current and recent titles have included Batwheels, Baby Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry (in various incarnations including The Tom and Jerry Show and Tom & Jerry in New York), Lucas the Spider (Lucas, die Spinne), Thomas & Friends (Thomas & seine Freunde – Alle Maschinen los!), CoComelon, Mr. Bean: The Animated Series, Pat the Dog (Pat der Hund), Grizzy and the Lemmings (Grizzy und die Lemminge), Alice & Lewis and Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz.
The Boomerang era featured a much broader classic-animation library: Scooby-Doo in numerous series, Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies compilations, The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Yogi Bear, The Pink Panther, Garfield, Inspector Gadget, Tom & Jerry Kids, Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, Wacky Races and Hong Kong Phooey, among many others. This archive-driven schedule was the channel's defining characteristic for seventeen years.
The Preschool Strategy
The 2023 rebrand from Boomerang to Cartoonito was part of a deliberate global strategy by Warner Bros. Discovery to give its preschool audience a dedicated brand, separate from Cartoon Network's school-age animation. In the German-speaking market this meant retiring a seventeen-year-old archive channel in favour of a purpose-built early-learning service — a recognition that the classic-cartoon library model, while beloved by nostalgic adults, was less effective at serving the platform operators' demand for trusted preschool brands.
The Cartoonito brand had already been tested in Germany as a programming block: first from September 2011 to 2014 on kabel eins, sixx and Boomerang, then again from 1 September 2022 on Boomerang, airing daily from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. with shows such as Thomas & Friends and Lucas the Spider. The block's return demonstrated audience appetite and paved the way for the full channel conversion.
The Central and Eastern European feed structure means the German service shares its schedule backbone with feeds serving many countries, with localised audio tracks — a cost-efficient model typical of pan-European children's channels. Continuity in some smaller markets remains in English, while the German, Dutch, Polish, Hungarian, Romanian, Czech, Bulgarian, Serbian, Croatian and Slovenian audiences receive localised presentation.
Coverage & Audience
Cartoonito Deutschland is a subscription-only channel, distributed via cable, satellite and IPTV pay packages in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It does not publish free-TV audience ratings. Its audience is preschool children and their parents — a demographic in which brand trust, advertising-free presentation and age-appropriate content are the key commercial criteria for carriage by platform operators.
Ownership
The channel is owned by The Cartoon Network, Inc., part of Warner Bros. Discovery, the US media group formed in 2022 by the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery. The German operation is based in Munich. Sister channels in the German market include Cartoon Network, Warner TV Comedy, Warner TV Film, Warner TV Serie, Discovery Channel, DMAX, TLC, HGTV, Eurosport 1, Eurosport 2 and Animal Planet.
Digital Presence
Warner Bros. Discovery streams its children's channels through its streaming platforms, and Cartoonito content is available on demand alongside the linear channel. Programme information is published in the electronic programme guides of carrying platforms. Wikipedia lists www.cartoonito.de as the channel's web address, though the English Wikipedia notes this link is dead and redirects to the Warner Bros. Discovery website; the domain could not be independently load-verified for this profile.
Market Position
In the German children's pay-TV market, Cartoonito competes with services such as Disney Junior, Nick Jr. and the free-TV children's offerings of Super RTL (Toggo) and KiKA. Its rebrand from the archive-driven Boomerang to the preschool-focused Cartoonito in 2023 reflected a strategic decision to give Warner Bros. Discovery a clearly defined preschool brand in German-speaking Europe, distinct from Cartoon Network's older-skewing animation. The channel's seventeen-year history as Boomerang Germany makes it one of the longest continuously operating children's pay-TV services in the German market, even as its name, feed structure and target audience have evolved.
Platform Carriage
Beyond cable, IPTV and satellite pay packages, Cartoonito is listed in Sky's Kids package in Germany and Austria (Sky channel 500) and on Telekom's Magenta TV (channel 706, via Sky Bonus), placing the preschool channel alongside the major platform line-ups.
