CBS Drama
CBS Drama was a British free-to-air television channel that aired classic and contemporary American drama series drawn from the CBS Studios International catalogue, alongside British, Australian and international programmes. It launched on 16 November 2009 as part of a joint venture between CBS Studios International and Chellomedia, replacing the Zone Romantica channel, and ran for more than twelve years before its CBS branding was retired. On 30 June 2022 it was renamed RealityXtra, and on 22 November 2023 it was rebranded again as True Crime Xtra, the name under which the channel continues to broadcast on Freeview channel 68.
Origins in the CBS–Chellomedia Joint Venture
The channel's history began on 14 September 2009, when the international arm of CBS, CBS Studios International, announced a joint venture with Chellomedia, then the international channels division of Liberty Global, to launch six CBS-branded channels in the UK. The new channels would replace the existing Zone portfolio — Zone Romantica, Zone Thriller, Zone Horror and Zone Reality, plus the timeshift services Zone Horror +1 and Zone Reality +1 — bringing American CBS programming to British audiences under a unified brand.
On 1 October 2009, the launch details were confirmed: CBS Reality, CBS Reality +1, CBS Drama and CBS Action would launch on 16 November 2009, replacing Zone Reality, Zone Reality +1, Zone Romantica and Zone Thriller respectively. Zone Horror and Zone Horror +1 followed, being rebranded as Horror Channel and Horror Channel +1 on 5 April 2010. The launch gave CBS its first dedicated UK channel presence, capitalising on the global popularity of American dramas.
Launch and Early Years
CBS Drama launched on 16 November 2009 in the slot previously occupied by Zone Romantica, a channel that had specialised in romantic drama and telenovelas. The new channel widened the remit considerably, drawing on the vast CBS library of American series as well as acquired British and international shows. The strategy was to offer a dependable schedule of drama repeats — police procedurals, soaps, courtroom dramas and classic serials — that would appeal to viewers who enjoyed long-running American television.
In the years that followed, CBS Drama established itself as a familiar presence on Sky, Virgin Media and later Freeview and YouView platforms. Its programming leaned heavily on the CBS back catalogue, which included some of the most successful dramas ever produced for American network television.
Ownership: From Chellomedia to AMC and Paramount
The channel's ownership changed hands over its lifetime. Originally launched through the CBS Studios International–Chellomedia partnership, the Chellomedia portfolio was acquired by AMC Networks International in 2014. The channels continued to be operated as the CBS AMC Networks UK Channels Partnership, a joint venture between AMC Networks International and Paramount Networks UK & Australia (the former ViacomCBS international division). This partnership structure remained in place through the channel's later rebrands, with sister channels including CBS Reality, CBS Justice, Horror Channel and later Legend.
European Rollout and the Polish Closure
On 1 August 2012, Chellomedia announced that all European versions of the Zone channels would be rebranded into CBS channels. In the UK this was a continuation of the existing branding, but in other territories the change was new: CBS Drama replaced Zone Romantica on 3 December 2012, and in Poland it replaced Zone Club. The Polish version of CBS Drama broadcast a mix of UK shows such as Bad Girls, Waterloo Road and Footballers' Wives, American shows including Dallas, Beverly Hills, 90210, CSI and Knots Landing, and Australian series such as Return to Eden and Bondi Rescue. However, the Polish feed closed on 31 December 2016 due to low audiences, leaving the UK version as the channel's main service.
Freeview and Platform Availability
CBS Drama expanded its UK distribution over time. CBS Reality launched on Freeview on 1 April 2014, followed by CBS Action on 1 October 2014, and by July 2014 CBS Drama was available on the YouView platform as part of TalkTalk TV's Entertainment Boost, although the channels were removed from that EPG on 2 June 2015. The channel remained available on satellite through Sky, on cable through Virgin Media, and later on Freeview, giving it broad reach among UK drama fans. It broadcast in 576i 16:9 SDTV.
Programming Highlights
The channel's schedule was built around American drama series produced or distributed by CBS. Among the many titles it aired were the western Bonanza, the CSI franchise entries CSI: Miami and CSI: NY, the family western drama Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, the prime-time soaps Dynasty, Dallas, Knots Landing, Falcon Crest and The Colbys, the medical drama ER, the military legal drama JAG, the romantic drama Beauty and the Beast, the legal dramas Boston Legal and The Practice, the sitcoms Cheers, Taxi and The Love Boat, the supernatural series Charmed, Medium and Touched by an Angel, and the daytime soaps Days of Our Lives, Guiding Light and The Young and the Restless. It also aired the detective series Matlock, Diagnosis: Murder and The Streets of San Francisco, the miniseries Shogun, North and South and The Thorn Birds, the mystery series Twin Peaks, and the comedy-drama Moonlighting.
British programming on the channel included Bad Girls, Waterloo Road, Footballers' Wives, Cutting It, Mile High and Playing the Field, while Australian titles included Return to Eden, Bondi Rescue and Outrageous Fortune. Daytime courtroom and talk programming such as Judge Judy, Judge Joe Brown and The Jerry Springer Show also featured. This eclectic mix gave the channel a distinctive character: a home for the long-running serials and procedurals that had defined popular television on both sides of the Atlantic.
The End of CBS Branding: RealityXtra
On 30 June 2022, the British arm of the AMC–Paramount partnership carried out a major revision of its channel line-up. All CBS branding was dropped, with the exception of CBS Reality, and new channel Legend took CBS Justice's slot along with Horror's programming. In the reshuffle, CBS Drama was renamed RealityXtra, becoming a sister channel to the CBS Reality channel. With the rebrand, RealityXtra changed frequencies on Freeview and became a limited-reach channel for viewers able to receive the range of local channels on channel 7 or 8. The change marked the end of the CBS Drama name after nearly thirteen years.
A short-lived companion service, RealityXtra2, launched on 26 October 2022 on Freeview channel 69, broadcasting a limited overnight schedule that included Donal MacIntyre's Murder Files, Written in Blood, The Real Prime Suspect and The Fugitive. It was replaced by HorrorXtra on 26 April 2023.
True Crime Xtra
On 22 November 2023, RealityXtra was rebranded once more as True Crime Xtra, aligning it with the True Crime brand and its sister channel True Crime. As True Crime Xtra, the channel centres its programming on American television shows produced by CBS and true-crime content, and it continues to broadcast on Freeview channel 68. The CBS Drama era is therefore best understood as the first and longest chapter of a channel that has survived through successive rebrands.
Legacy
CBS Drama's legacy lies in its role as one of the first channels to bring the depth of the CBS library directly to British free and pay television. For more than a decade it offered a reliable home for classic American drama — from Bonanza and Dallas to ER and JAG — at a time when streaming services had not yet made such back catalogues widely available. Its transformation into RealityXtra and then True Crime Xtra reflects the broader shift in UK multichannel television away from licensed American branding and toward genre-defined channel identities.
