About Changzhou News Net
Changzhou News Net
Changzhou News Net, published at cznews.net, is the digital news portal of the Changzhou Daily Media Group in Changzhou, in southern Jiangsu province, China. It publishes Changzhou municipal news and the group's newspaper editions online as the city's official news gateway in southern Jiangsu. Behind it stand the group's established print titles, the Changzhou Daily and the Changzhou Evening News, and ahead of it lies one of the most distinctive city economies in China: a manufacturing city of about five million people that has built a national reputation as a capital of new energy.
Changzhou sits between larger neighbours — Nanjing, the provincial capital, to the west and Shanghai to the east, with Wuxi as its immediate eastern neighbour — and it has often been overshadowed by them in national attention. Its own newspaper group and portal exist precisely to counter that: to provide a full municipal news service, rooted in the city itself, for a prefecture-level city that in 2023 became the least populated city in China to record a regional GDP above one trillion yuan. Changzhou News Net is where that service now lives online.
Parent Group: Changzhou Daily Media Group
The portal belongs to the Changzhou Daily Media Group, the newspaper group built around the Changzhou Daily, the city's official newspaper, and the Changzhou Evening News, its popular evening title. The close integration of the two titles is visible in their leadership: in February 2023, Nanjing Normal University's School of Journalism and Communication recorded a symposium with Zhang Zheng, who served simultaneously as deputy secretary of the Party Committee of Changzhou Daily, editor-in-chief of the Changzhou Daily and editor-in-chief of the Changzhou Evening News. One senior editor heading both the official daily and the evening paper is characteristic of China's converged municipal newspaper groups, in which the party newspaper and the metropolitan title are run as a single newsroom system.
That 2023 symposium itself says something about the group's position. A university journalism school invited the Changzhou Daily leadership to discuss talent training and high-quality graduate employment, with the discussion centred on the deep integration of theory and practice and on training all-media news and communication talent for a changing news environment. In other words, the group behind Changzhou News Net is treated within Jiangsu's journalism-education system as a practitioner of all-media publishing — a print group whose working future is explicitly digital and converged, which is the environment its news net serves.
The evening paper's reporting tradition is also documented in translation. Local expatriate media translating Changzhou Evening News stories have shown the title covering practical city life in detail — for example, explaining how residents could rent shared new-energy cars by the minute, paying through WeChat, Alipay or UnionPay after registering and uploading a driving licence. Stories of that kind, municipal, service-oriented and closely tied to Changzhou's new-energy economy, are the evening-paper inheritance that the group's digital portal carries to online readers.
Changzhou: City and Region
Changzhou is a prefecture-level city in southern Jiangsu, covering a total area of 4,385 square kilometres. It is located on the southern bank of the Yangtze River, borders Nanjing to the west, Zhenjiang to the northwest, Wuxi to the east and Zhejiang province to the south, and sits in the affluent Yangtze River Delta, between Shanghai and Nanjing. According to the 2020 census, its permanent population was 5,278,121, and Xinhua's reporting on its 2023 economic results described a population of around five million. The city is also known as the Dragon City.
It is an ancient city. Changzhou counts a recorded history of about 3,200 years; in the late Spring and Autumn period, in 547 BC, Ji Zha, the fourth son of the King of Wu, held Yanling as his principality, the beginning of the city's history with an exact calendar and place name. The name Changzhou dates to 589, the ninth year of the reign of Emperor Wen of Sui, after earlier names including Yanling, Biling and Wujin, and the modern municipal government was founded in 1949. The Grand Canal shaped the city for centuries: Changzhou developed as a transshipment point and commercial centre for agricultural produce shipped by canal, a distribution role that defined its traditional economy.
Modern Changzhou was built on textiles and engineering. It began to develop a cotton textile industry in the 1920s, with cotton mills established in the late 1930s as businesses relocated from Shanghai, and it remained a textile centre and Jiangsu's most important weaving location, alongside food-processing industries. After 1949 it developed as an engineering centre: Qishuyan, some ten kilometres southeast of the city, has one of the largest locomotive and rolling-stock plants in China, and other works produced diesel engines, generators, transformers and agricultural and textile machinery, with a steel plant added in 1958. Township and collective enterprises then powered its early reform-era growth. That layered industrial history — canal trade, textiles, locomotives, machinery — is the background against which the city's newspapers have always reported, and against which its newest industry must be understood.
The New-Energy Economy as a News Story
Changzhou's defining contemporary story, and therefore a defining subject for Changzhou News Net, is new energy. Dubbed a capital of new energy, the city reported a regional GDP of 1.01 trillion yuan in 2023, up 6.8 percent year on year, according to its statistics department — becoming, with a population of around five million, the least populated Chinese city with a GDP over one trillion yuan, and the fifth city in Jiangsu to reach that milestone after Suzhou, Nanjing, Wuxi and Nantong.
The scale of the sector, as reported by Xinhua, is striking. The output value of Changzhou's new-energy industry reached about 768 billion yuan in 2023, and the city aimed to expand it to over one trillion yuan by 2025. The industrial-chain integrity of its power batteries reached 97 percent, ranked first in China, and its output accounted for 20 percent of the country's power-battery production capacity. The city also contributed about 10 percent of Chinese-made photovoltaic cells and modules, and in 2023 it produced more than 700,000 new-energy vehicles, accounting for 70 percent of those made in Jiangsu province. City reporting continues in the same vein: Changzhou's own English-language government news pages have carried items on a lithium-ion battery project named a national pilot for carbon-footprint labelling, on enterprises selected as near-zero-carbon factories, and on a smart electric two-wheeler cluster that accounts for about ten percent of China's output with a complete chain from parts to assembly.
For a municipal news portal, these are not abstract statistics. They translate into daily reporting on factories, supply chains, technology projects, talent policy — the city has publicised measures such as a Talent Apartment Plan — investment promotion, and the environmental and carbon goals attached to the industry. A city that pays part of the salaries of government employees, state-owned enterprise workers and public-institution staff in digital yuan, as Changzhou expanded in September 2024, is also a city whose municipal journalism must explain financial and technological policy to ordinary readers. Changzhou News Net operates at exactly that junction of industry, policy and daily life.
News Coverage
Changzhou News Net publishes Changzhou municipal news online. Its coverage follows the dual inheritance of its parent titles: official and public-affairs reporting in the Changzhou Daily tradition, and people's-livelihood and city-life reporting in the Changzhou Evening News tradition. The standing themes of the city's public agenda are visible across Changzhou's official reporting: municipal government and major projects, industry and innovation, transport — including the city's airport, which handled a record 4.5 million passengers with 13.2 percent annual growth in the figures reported for 2024 — Spring Festival travel and holiday consumption, education and universities, culture and tourism, and trade and investment links with partners from Shanghai to Stuttgart and beyond.
Culture forms a distinct strand. Changzhou promotes itself through its 3,200-year history, its Grand Canal heritage, the Tianning Temple and its pagoda, the China Dinosaur Park, and public programmes such as the Reading the City series launched by the municipal publicity department and other agencies from November 2025, which invited residents and visitors to explore the city through five themes — architecture, place names, long-established local brands, books and visual media — under the theme “Tracing City Roots, Exploring Changzhou.” The inauguration of a Changzhou International Communication Center, reported in November 2025, likewise belongs to the city's effort to tell its story outward. A municipal portal rooted in the city's newspaper group is the natural Chinese-language home for coverage of that cultural agenda as it unfolds.
The portal's position also depends on distinction. Changzhou News Net is a municipal outlet, not the Jiangsu provincial system based in Nanjing and not the national media. Its value lies in proximity: district and county news, municipal policy as it affects Changzhou households, and industrial news reported from inside the factories and industrial parks of Changzhou itself — including the Changzhou National High-tech District, whose key-project groundbreakings and foreign-invested manufacturing projects are staples of the city's economic reporting.
Digital Editions and Platforms
At cznews.net, the group's newspaper editions and municipal reporting are published online as the city's official news gateway, in the description used by media directories and the Cyberspace Administration of China licensed-source listings on which the outlet appears. That licensing context matters: China's approved-source system, as analysed by China Media Project, maintains a roster of government-run media outlets whose content other websites and platforms may legally republish, and municipal newspaper-group portals form its local tier. Inclusion places Changzhou News Net's reporting inside the recognised supply chain of Chinese online news, citable by other platforms as an authorised source for Changzhou.
The group's digital direction is consistent with its leadership's public emphasis on all-media talent and deep integration of theory and practice in news communication. In practical terms, for readers, the portal is the always-on edition of the Changzhou newspaper system: the Changzhou Daily's official news and the Changzhou Evening News' city-life journalism, no longer limited by a print schedule, reaching readers on the web throughout the day. Changzhou's separate English-language government site serves foreign readers with translated municipal news, but the primary, fullest record remains the Chinese-language output of the newspaper group at cznews.net.
Organisation
Organisationally, Changzhou News Net is a unit of a municipal newspaper group rather than an independent internet publisher. The Changzhou Daily's Party committee provides the group's leadership, its editor-in-chief has concurrently headed both the Changzhou Daily and the Changzhou Evening News, and the group's engagement with journalism education — discussing all-media talent training with Nanjing Normal University's journalism school in 2023 — reflects an organisation consciously staffing for converged print, web and mobile production.
This structure explains the portal's editorial character. An official daily supplies authority on municipal policy; an evening paper supplies closeness to readers' daily concerns; a single group management joins them; and the news net publishes the combined output under the city's name. It is the same pattern found in other southern Jiangsu cities such as Wuxi and Suzhou, where strong prefecture-level cities sustain their own newspaper groups and portals beneath the provincial media centred in Nanjing.
Audience and Reach
The portal's core audience is Changzhou's permanent population of about 5.28 million people recorded in the 2020 census, together with the businesses, institutions and industrial workforce of a trillion-yuan manufacturing economy. Because Changzhou is the least populated trillion-yuan city in China, its per-person economic story is unusually strong, and its municipal news — on housing, talent policy, transport, education and consumer life — serves a prosperous urban readership in the heart of the Yangtze River Delta, within easy reach of both Shanghai and Nanjing.
Beyond the city, the audience includes Jiangsu readers following the province's fifth trillion-yuan city, the new-energy industry nationally — for whom Changzhou's battery, photovoltaic and vehicle output figures are sector benchmarks — and Changzhou people elsewhere following home news. Through the licensed-source system, the portal's reporting can be republished by other platforms, extending a municipal newsroom's reach into national feeds whenever a Changzhou story, from a record battery deal to a national technology project, carries wider significance.
Role in Southern Jiangsu's Media Landscape
Changzhou News Net's role is to be Changzhou's own voice in a crowded regional information space. To its west, Nanjing's provincial and capital-city media speak for Jiangsu as a whole; to its east, Wuxi and Suzhou sustain powerful municipal groups of their own; beyond them, Shanghai's media dominate the delta. Between those poles, Changzhou — ancient Yanling, the Dragon City, a canal trading centre turned textile and locomotive town turned new-energy capital — requires a portal that treats its municipal government, its districts, its factories and its culture as the centre of the story rather than as a dateline in someone else's.
That is the function cznews.net performs for the Changzhou Daily Media Group. It preserves, in digital form, the two functions the group has long performed in print — the official record of the Changzhou Daily and the everyday city companion of the Changzhou Evening News — and applies them to a city whose current chapter, written in power batteries, photovoltaics and electric vehicles, is being watched across China. For readers who want to know what is happening in Changzhou, in Changzhou's own newspaper group's reporting, Changzhou News Net is the city's official news gateway.
