About CHCH

CHCH

CHCH is an independent television station licensed to Hamilton, Ontario, and owned by Channel Zero. Broadcasting over the air as CHCH-DT on channel 11 and carried widely on cable and satellite, the station serves the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area with a mix of local news, movies, classic television series, and syndicated entertainment, and it is one of the few remaining locally owned independent commercial stations in Canada.

Overview

CHCH occupies an unusual position in Canadian broadcasting: a major-market station with no network affiliation, programming itself entirely from its Hamilton studios. Its schedule is built around three pillars — local news, anchored by the long-running Morning Live and evening newscasts; a deep library of movies; and acquired series, with an emphasis in recent years on retro and classic television. The station brands simply as "CHCH" on air and positions itself as Hamilton's hometown station, with a newsroom focused on the Hamilton, Halton, Niagara, and western Greater Toronto Area communities that the Toronto-based networks cover only lightly.

The station's independence is both an editorial identity and a business model. Without network programming costs or affiliation fees, CHCH programs opportunistically, acquiring syndicated series, movies, and special programming on the open market. It is also a secondary affiliate of Yes TV's indieNET service, carrying some of that system's family entertainment programming. The station streams its signal online and maintains chch.com as a news and program hub.

History

CHCH is one of Canada's oldest private television stations, signing on in 1954 as an affiliate of the CBC's English network. In 1961 it disaffiliated from the CBC to become Canada's first fully independent television station, a pioneering move that established the template for private independent broadcasting in the country. Through the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, CHCH built a reputation for local programming and for acquiring popular American series, becoming a beloved fixture in Hamilton and across southern Ontario.

The station passed through several corporate eras: it was part of WIC's independent station group in the 1990s, then of Canwest's CH system (later rebranded E!) in the 2000s. When Canwest's financial collapse forced the shutdown of the E! system in 2009, CHCH was acquired by Channel Zero, the Toronto-based independent broadcaster, which has owned it ever since. Under Channel Zero, CHCH initially experimented with an all-news daytime format alongside movies and entertainment; the all-news block was discontinued in December 2015 amid budget cuts, and the station refocused on its current mix of morning and evening news, movies, and retro series. A syndication arrangement with 20th Television has supplied much of its library programming, and by 2018 the station had leaned decisively into classic television, positioning itself as a destination for vintage series.

Programming

News is the station's signature. Morning Live, CHCH's weekday morning show, is a Hamilton institution, combining local news, weather, traffic, and interviews with a community focus. Evening newscasts cover the day's events in Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Niagara, and surrounding communities, with reporting resources concentrated where the Toronto networks maintain only bureaus. The station has won recognition for local journalism that serves communities often overlooked by Toronto-centric coverage.

Outside news hours, CHCH programs movies — a staple of the schedule for decades — and a rotating lineup of classic and contemporary syndicated series. Since the late 2010s the station has emphasized retro programming, airing vintage dramas, comedies, and action series that appeal to nostalgic viewers. Through its indieNET secondary affiliation, CHCH also carries entertainment programming from Yes TV. Special programming includes holiday movies, community specials, and coverage of local events.

Coverage & Audience

CHCH broadcasts over the air from its Hamilton transmitter on digital channel 11, reaching the Hamilton market and much of the Greater Toronto Area, and it is carried on cable, IPTV, and satellite lineups across Ontario and beyond. The station's audience skews toward viewers seeking local Hamilton-area news and toward fans of classic television, demographics that are underserved by the Toronto-based networks and by streaming services focused on original content. Its morning show competes directly with the Toronto stations' breakfast programming by offering a distinctly Hamilton-centred alternative.

Ownership

CHCH is owned by Channel Zero, an independent Canadian broadcasting company based in Toronto. Channel Zero acquired the station from Canwest in 2009 during the dissolution of the E! television system, and has operated it as an independent station ever since. Channel Zero's portfolio also includes the specialty channels CHCH's sister services and the company's production and distribution interests. The company's stewardship has kept CHCH as one of the very few major-market Canadian stations under independent local ownership rather than part of a national network group.

Signature Programming and News Operation

CHCH's news operation is the heart of the station. "Morning Live," the station's flagship morning program, has been a Hamilton television institution for decades — a mix of news, weather, interviews, and community features that serves as the city's wake-up show. The morning program's longevity and local focus distinguish it from the Toronto-based morning shows that also reach Hamilton viewers: "Morning Live" covers Hamilton city council, local business, and community events with a granularity that no Toronto station matches.

The station's evening news programs continue this local emphasis, and CHCH has historically programmed news in dayparts where competitors air entertainment — a strategy that reflects both its independent status and its newsroom's capacity. Beyond news, the station's schedule has featured movies, syndicated series, and specialty programming, though the news operation has increasingly become the station's defining identity.

In December 2015, CHCH underwent a dramatic restructuring, laying off much of its news staff and shifting toward a streamlined news format — a move that drew national attention to the economics of local television. The station rebuilt its news operation in the following years, and its continued operation as an independent local station remains a point of pride in Hamilton's media landscape.

Industry Context and Independence

CHCH's independence makes it an anomaly in Canadian television. As ownership consolidated around Bell, Rogers, Corus, and Quebecor, CHCH remained outside the major groups — first under Canwest, then under Channel Zero, the Toronto-based independent broadcaster that acquired the station in 2009. Channel Zero's ownership has preserved the station's local character while providing the corporate backing of an independent media company with its own specialty channels and production interests.

The station's history mirrors the broader story of Canadian independent television. Launched in 1954 as a CBC affiliate, CHCH went independent in 1961 when the CBC established its own Toronto station, and for decades it thrived as a regional independent — airing movies, syndicated programming, and local news to the Hamilton-Toronto corridor. The station's transmitter reach into the Greater Toronto Area gives it access to Canada's largest television market, a geographic advantage that has sustained it through ownership changes and format evolutions.

CHCH's survival as an independent local station is increasingly rare and increasingly valued. As local news has contracted across North America, the station's commitment to Hamilton-area journalism — however restructured — represents a form of local broadcasting that larger groups have often abandoned in smaller markets.

Digital Presence

CHCH's official website at chch.com serves as the station's news portal, carrying local news stories, video clips, program schedules, and a live stream of the broadcast signal. The station maintains active social media accounts for CHCH News and Morning Live, distributing breaking news, weather updates, and interview segments to followers across the Hamilton region. Streaming apps make the station available on connected TVs and mobile devices, and the station's newscasts are routinely clipped for social sharing. As viewing habits shift online, chch.com has become the station's primary digital storefront for both news and entertainment programming information.
