The Chicago Sun-Times took its modern form in 1948 from the merger of the Chicago Sun — founded in 1941 by department store heir Marshall Field III — and the Chicago Daily Times. Under the Field family it built a populist, hard-driving reputation, absorbing much of the staff of the shuttered Chicago Daily News in 1978, including columnist Mike Royko. Its journalists have won eight Pulitzer Prizes, including Roger Ebert's 1975 criticism prize — the first Pulitzer ever awarded to a film critic.

Ownership changed hands repeatedly from the 1980s onward — Rupert Murdoch, Conrad Black's Hollinger, and local investor groups — with the paper twice passing through bankruptcy-era sales. In January 2022, Chicago Public Media acquired the Sun-Times in a $61 million philanthropy-backed deal, converting it to nonprofit status. The acquisition — one of the first in the US in which a public radio organization bought a daily newspaper — paired the tabloid with WBEZ 91.5 FM under one nonprofit roof, while both newsrooms kept editorial independence.
