About China Jilin Net

China Jilin Net

Overview

China Jilin Net (中国吉林网) is the provincial key news website and portal for Jilin Province in northeast China, publishing at cnjiwang.com from Changchun, the provincial capital. It is operated by the Jilin Daily Media Group and is listed in the Cyberspace Administration of China's licensed system as Jilin's provincial key news website. In that role it serves as the province's official online news gateway: the digital home for Jilin political, economic and social news, produced within the same media system as Jilin Daily, the provincial party newspaper, and distributed to national platforms under its own name.

The site's mobile-era reporting brand is Jike News (吉刻新闻), the name under which its journalists file and under which its work is entered for national honours. Together, the website and the Jike News operation form the new-media core of the Jilin Daily group — the part of the province's mainstream press built for phone-first readers, rolling news and multimedia storytelling rather than for the printed page.

The parent newspaper: Jilin Daily since 1945

China Jilin Net's parent title, Jilin Daily, is among the earliest-founded provincial party newspapers in China. It began on 10 October 1945 in Jilin City, established by the Jilin Special Branch of the Chinese Communist Party under the name People's Daily — a local paper that predates the national People's Daily and took its first issue from the taken-over facilities of a Manchukuo-era news organisation. The paper moved with the front lines of the civil war, relocating to Yanji in April 1946, and on 1 March 1947 both its Chinese and Korean-language editions were renamed Jilin Daily.

The paper's early history reflects the turbulence of the period. It moved to Jiahe in March 1948 and back to Jilin City days later; on 1 June 1949 it merged with the Workers' Daily and Farmers' Daily to form the Jilin Workers' and Peasants' Daily; and on 1 February 1950 it resumed the name Jilin Daily, publishing a masthead written by Mao Zedong that first appeared on 3 May 1950. Mao wrote the paper's masthead a second time, the version published on 2 February 1965. In this period the paper built the correspondent networks across Jilin's towns and villages that provincial party papers used to gather news from the grassroots.

From provincial capital to media group

On 1 September 1954 the Changchun city party newspaper was merged into Jilin Daily and the paper moved to Changchun, which had become the provincial capital, taking up residence on what is now Renmin Street. The combined Jilin Daily became the single paper of record for the province. It was an early technological adopter among provincial papers: its 1986 output is remembered in the paper's own history for the shift from hot-metal "lead and fire" production to computer typesetting and offset printing, for publishing the first colour newspaper produced with that technology in the paper's history, and for pioneering self-organised distribution among China's provincial newspapers — a reform that took its circulation to a then-record high.

In the decades since, Jilin Daily has grown into the Jilin Daily Newspaper Group, whose titles have included the City Evening News — for a time the province's largest-circulation newspaper — and the Dongya Economic and Trade News, alongside a family of weekly and specialist publications. The group marked the paper's eightieth anniversary on 10 October 2025 with a history that stresses the same continuity China Jilin Net represents: a party newspaper founded in 1945 repositioning itself, in its own words, around integrated media — content collected once, produced in many forms and distributed across many platforms.

Digital brands: the website, Jike News and the group matrix

China Jilin Net is the group's flagship website, and Jike News is its newsroom's mobile identity — the byline carried by its chief reporters and the brand attached to its multimedia work. The wider Jilin Daily group's digital matrix, as printed on the newspaper's own masthead, also includes the Cailian News client (彩练新闻), the group's news app, and Daji Net, its companion web property. The strategy described in the group's anniversary history is explicit: break down the wall between the paper edition and the web edition, run a single collection process feeding multiple products, and build an all-media matrix so that, in the group's phrase, the voice of Jilin travels beyond paper and ink into the cloud.

Within that matrix, roles are divided by tempo and format. The printed Jilin Daily remains the province's authoritative daily record; the Cailian app delivers the group's journalism in app form; and China Jilin Net with Jike News handles the continuous, web-native layer — breaking provincial news, live and visual formats, and the feature storytelling at which its reporters have recently won national recognition.

Notable journalism: China News Award recognition in 2026

The clearest recent measure of the site's journalism came in October 2026, when the All-China Journalists Association published the proposed results of the 36th China News Award, the country's premier national journalism prize. Of 380 works listed nationally, seven came from Jilin Province — and two of those seven were submitted by China Jilin Net, each proposed for a third prize.

The first, "Jilin's Snow Holiday Sets an Example for Education Nationwide," examined the province's experiment of giving schoolchildren holidays built around its ice-and-snow season — a piece of education-policy reporting rooted in Jilin's distinctive winter economy. The second, "Viewing the Treasure Island from 600,000 Metres: 'Jilin-1' Focuses on Taiwan," used imagery from the Jilin-1 remote-sensing satellite constellation — the Changchun-developed constellation that is one of the province's flagship high-technology achievements — to tell a story joining provincial science to a national theme. The nominated work was associated with the site's Jike News chief reporter Chen Zhiwen. For a provincial website, placing two works on the national award list in a single year is a substantial distinction, and it illustrates the editorial territory China Jilin Net has made its own: Jilin stories, told with provincial access, that carry national significance.

Editorial focus

The site's everyday agenda is the government and development of Jilin Province. Its news columns follow the provincial party committee and government, the work of Changchun as an industrial and university city — home to the FAW automotive group and to Jilin University — and the economies of the province's other cities, from Jilin City and Yanbian's Korean autonomous prefecture to the agricultural plains that make Jilin one of China's important commercial grain bases. Seasonal coverage is a speciality the award jury effectively endorsed: Jilin's ice-and-snow tourism, its rime-covered riverbanks and its winter-sports ambitions generate a stream of reporting each year, including preparations in Changchun for the 2027 Winter Universiade, whose flame arrived in the city in October 2026 to extensive local coverage.

National and international news is carried as part of the portal format, but the site's reason to exist is the provincial layer: prefectural and county developments too small for national outlets, provincial policy explained at the moment of release, and service information for Jilin residents.

Place in China's provincial web system

Like its counterparts in other provinces, China Jilin Net holds its position through the national licensing system for internet news services administered by the Cyberspace Administration of China. Key-website status is not a marketing label; it is the regulatory foundation that allows the site to conduct original news gathering and to be treated by other platforms as an authorised source. When national commercial portals carry a Jilin story credited to China Jilin Net, they are drawing on that licensed status — the same mechanism by which the site's award-listed features reached readers far beyond the province.

The model also explains the site's relationship with its parent group. Jilin Daily's eight decades of archives, correspondent networks and institutional access are the substrate; China Jilin Net is the layer that converts that substrate into continuous digital publication.

Audience and use

The primary audience is in Jilin itself: officials, businesses, teachers, researchers and ordinary readers who need the province's news in its official form. A second audience is national — editors and readers elsewhere in China for whom cnjiwang.com is the reference point for Jilin affairs, from Changbai Mountain tourism to the province's satellite and automotive industries. The site publishes in Chinese; its Korean-language heritage is a reminder of Jilin's geography, home to a large ethnic Korean community along the border, though the modern portal's output is overwhelmingly in Chinese.

For media researchers, the site is also a case study in the Chinese provincial-press transition: a newspaper group whose flagship was founded in the civil-war era now competing for national journalism prizes with satellite imagery and snow-holiday features produced by its website's mobile newsroom.

Assessment

China Jilin Net is best understood as the digital spearhead of one of China's oldest provincial newspaper groups. Anchored in Changchun, licensed as Jilin's provincial key news website, and fronted by the Jike News brand, it combines the routine authority of a party-paper portal — provincial government news, policy and service information — with feature journalism strong enough to place two works on the 36th China News Award list in 2026. Readers looking for the official, continuous record of Jilin Province will find it at cnjiwang.com.
