About Chinese Society of Agricultural Engineering

Chinese Society of Agricultural Engineering

The Chinese Society of Agricultural Engineering (中国农业工程学会, CSAE), based in Beijing under the China Association for Science and Technology, is China's national learned society for the engineering of agriculture. It serves the researchers, engineers, teachers and enterprises who apply engineering to farming and rural systems: farm mechanisation, agricultural water and soil engineering, protected horticulture, agro-processing, rural energy and agricultural systems. The Society is a national first-level society and China's national member of the International Commission of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (CIGR). This profile concerns the Society itself; its journals are described only as part of its publishing function.

An idea born abroad, founded at Hangzhou in 1979

The Society's origins reach back further than its formal founding. On 15 January 1948, nineteen Chinese students studying agricultural engineering in the United States convened the first preparatory meeting for a Chinese society of agricultural engineers in Stockton, California. For historical reasons, that early initiative could not immediately become a national organisation at home. The first National Congress of the Chinese Society of Agricultural Engineers was instead held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, in 1979, formally establishing the society that is today known in English as the Chinese Society of Agricultural Engineering.

The year 1979 placed the new Society at the start of China's reform era, when agricultural modernisation became an urgent national task. Mechanisation, irrigation, land improvement and post-harvest handling all required engineering knowledge adapted to Chinese farms, which were then still largely worked by hand and animal power. A national society gave the scattered specialists in universities, research academies and machinery institutes a common professional identity. The Society marked its fortieth anniversary in December 2019, returning to Hangzhou for a fortieth-anniversary symposium and academic annual conference held from 7 to 9 December 2019.

Membership and national reach

The Society has grown into a large national body with over 10,000 members. Twenty-three provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities have established provincial societies of agricultural engineering linked to the national body, giving the CSAE a presence across China's varied farming regions — from the irrigated plains of the north to the hilly farmland of the south and the greenhouse belts around major cities.

That federal structure matters for a discipline defined by local conditions. A rice transplanter suited to the Yangtze delta, a water-saving irrigation system for arid Xinjiang and a cold-climate livestock building for the northeast pose different engineering problems. Provincial societies allow adaptation and field testing to be organised locally, while the national Society coordinates standards liaison, national congresses and international representation.

Committees, branches and working groups

The Society currently has thirty-one branches and six working committees covering academic exchange, international exchange, science popularisation, consulting, education, and youth science and technology. Its twenty-five specialised committees and branches include those for agricultural information and electrical engineering, agricultural remote sensing, agricultural mechanisation and equipment, rural planning and design engineering, facility horticulture engineering, seed industry equipment engineering, agricultural resources, environment and energy engineering, agricultural product processing and storage engineering, agricultural systems engineering, digital rural engineering, animal husbandry engineering, agricultural soil and water engineering, agricultural engineering standardisation, land use engineering, comprehensive development and utilisation of mountain resources, aquatic engineering, and castor economic technology, among others.

Read as a list, the committees map the discipline itself. Agricultural engineering in China is not only tractors and harvesters. It includes the sensors and software of agricultural information engineering, the structures and climate control of facility horticulture, the drying, storage and processing lines that determine food losses after harvest, the biogas and rural energy systems that serve villages, and the land consolidation and rural planning work that reshapes fields and settlements for modern production.

What agricultural engineers do

The research topics carried in the Society's flagship journal give a concrete picture of the work its members do. Recent volumes include studies of supplementary pollination for hybrid rice breeding using multi-rotor electric unmanned helicopters, transplanting mechanisms with planetary gear trains, automated feeding devices for livestock breeding, wireless sensor networking in large paddy fields, raft culture equipment for shellfish farming, and the reconstruction of agricultural systems at landscape scale. Other work covers hot-air drying of grain, potato seed metering, maize straw movement in subsoiling operations, and the calibration of soil models for cotton fields in Xinjiang.

Together those examples show the discipline's span from the very small — a seed-metering sensor — to the very large — watershed and land-use systems. They also show its direction of travel: toward intelligent, sensor-rich and increasingly automated agriculture, in which unmanned aerial vehicles, machine vision and data networks are becoming ordinary farm tools. The Society's committees for agricultural information, remote sensing and digital rural engineering exist precisely to organise that fast-moving frontier.

Publishing as a Society function: the Transactions

The Society is best known internationally as the sponsor of the Transactions of the Chinese Society of Agricultural Engineering (农业工程学报), founded in 1985 with ISSN 1002-6819, China's leading agricultural-engineering journal. The Transactions is a periodical distinct from the Society itself. As its publishing function, it reports academic developments in agricultural engineering mainly in China and some developments from abroad, and it is indexed by EI Compendex and other international services.

Its stated primary topics are comprehensive research, agricultural equipment and mechanisation, soil and water engineering, agricultural information and electrical technologies, agricultural bio-environmental and energy engineering, land consolidation and rehabilitation engineering, and agricultural produce processing engineering. A journal founded in 1985 and still publishing frequent volumes — reaching volume 42 by 2026 in international listings — provides the permanent, citable record of the discipline in Chinese, through which design methods, field trials and systems analyses accumulate into shared knowledge.

International publishing: IJABE

The Society's second major publishing function is international and in English. The International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering (IJABE), launched in 2008, is a peer-reviewed open-access international journal co-sponsored by the United States-based Association of Agricultural, Biological and Food Engineers (AOCABFE) and the Chinese Society of Agricultural Engineering, and published by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Engineering. Its print ISSN is 1934-6344 and its electronic ISSN is 1934-6352, both registered in the United States.

IJABE aims at promoting agricultural and biological engineering, increasing academic prosperity and fostering international academic exchange and cooperation. Its international editorial board is made up of over 300 leading researchers from about fifty countries. For the Society, co-sponsoring an English-language open-access journal complements the Chinese-language Transactions: Chinese results can reach overseas readers directly, and overseas authors gain a China-linked venue, strengthening the two-way flow on which a globally connected discipline depends.

Conferences and international exchange

The Society convenes biennial international conferences on agricultural engineering that draw partner societies such as the American ASABE and the Canadian CSBE, as in the 2013 meeting hosted at Jiangsu University, and it organises the domestic academic congresses of China's agricultural-engineering profession. Its fortieth-anniversary symposium in Hangzhou in 2019 drew over 1,000 experts from around the world under the theme of remaining true to the original aspiration of agricultural engineering development and keeping firmly in mind the mission of rural revitalisation. Attendees included leaders of the China Association for Science and Technology, former leaders of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the Secretary-General of CIGR, and academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering including Wang Maohua, Luo Xiwen, Chen Xuegeng, Kang Shaozhong, Zhao Chunjiang and Li Tianlai.

At that meeting the Society honoured those who had made outstanding contributions to the industry and the Society over forty years, including excellent contribution and outstanding paper awards. Branch-level meetings sustain exchange between the large congresses: the Agricultural Products Processing and Storage Engineering Branch annual conference hosted at Jiangsu University in November 2015, for example, drew more than 700 experts and scholars from 126 units to discuss food physics processing technology and equipment, quality inspection and functional foods. As China's adhering body in CIGR, the Society also channels Chinese participation into the world organisation of the discipline.

Awards, standards and professional service

Beyond conferences, the Society organises the awards and standards liaison of China's agricultural-engineering profession. Awards recognise both lifetime contribution and excellent papers, making visible the work — often embodied in a machine, a greenhouse system or a processing line rather than a single publication — by which engineering improves farming. Standards liaison matters because agricultural machinery, greenhouse structures, irrigation equipment and processing plant must meet common safety and performance expectations if they are to be manufactured at scale and trusted by farmers.

The working committees for consulting, education and science popularisation extend the Society's service further: consulting connects expertise to enterprises and local governments; education links the Society to the university departments that train agricultural engineers; and popularisation carries knowledge of new machinery, water-saving methods and food-safety technology to the farming public. The youth science and technology committee supports early-career members, the successors to the academicians honoured in 2019.

The Society in China's agricultural transformation

The Chinese Society of Agricultural Engineering has accompanied one of the largest agricultural transformations in history: the shift of Chinese farming from manual labour toward mechanised, irrigated, protected and increasingly digital production, alongside national programmes for rural revitalisation. Its members design the equipment and systems for that shift, test them in the field, publish the results in its journals, debate them at its congresses and encode the lessons in standards.

From a preparatory meeting of nineteen students in California in 1948 to a national society of over 10,000 members with thirty-one branches, the Society's history mirrors the professionalisation of agricultural engineering in China itself. Its enduring role is organisational rather than commercial: to hold the discipline together — its people, its knowledge and its standards — so that engineering can continue to serve Chinese agriculture.
