About Chron.com

Chron.com

Overview

Chron.com, branded simply as Chron, is a digital-first news website based in Houston, Texas, owned by Hearst Newspapers. It serves more than 6 million unique readers a month in Houston and the surrounding region, including Galveston and the Gulf Coast, making it one of the largest local news websites in Texas. Chron is headquartered with Hearst's Houston operations at 4747 Southwest Freeway in Houston.

Chron's identity is frequently misunderstood, because for years its address was the online home of the Houston Chronicle. Since 2012, however, Chron has been a standalone publication: it has its own newsroom, its own staff and its own editorial personality, separate from the Chronicle's, even though both titles share the Hearst parent company. Where the Chronicle is Houston's newspaper of record, Chron is its digital-first sibling — faster, more conversational, and oriented toward the stories that capture local culture and spark conversation.

Becoming an Independent Site in 2012

Chron.com served for years as the website where the Houston Chronicle published its journalism online, on an advertising-supported, non-subscription basis. That arrangement ended in 2012, when Hearst launched HoustonChronicle.com as the Chronicle's own subscriber website, carrying the content of the daily print edition behind a subscription model. In November 2012 the change was announced to readers in a letter published on Chron itself, introducing HoustonChronicle.com as the Chronicle's new home.

From that point, Chron.com became its own distinctive site and newsroom. The split created two different digital products under one owner in one city: a subscription site carrying the newspaper's full report, and a free, advertising-supported site with its own reporters and editors, its own story selection and its own voice, aimed at the broadest possible metro audience. Chron has operated on that basis ever since, and references to it as simply the Chronicle's website are a decade out of date.

Ownership: Hearst Newspapers

Chron is owned by Hearst Newspapers, the newspaper division of the Hearst media company. Hearst Newspapers encompasses a network of 24 daily and 52 weekly publications across the United States — including the Houston Chronicle, the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Antonio Express-News and the Albany Times Union — along with several top digital-only news and lifestyle sites, marketing services businesses and entertainment businesses such as King Features Syndicate, employing some 2,500 people across the nation.

Within that portfolio, Chron is one of Hearst's flagship digital-only brands: a publication with a major metro audience and no print edition of its own. Hearst's Houston operation is a useful illustration of the company's two-track digital strategy, running a subscription newspaper site and a free, scale-driven news site in parallel in the same market, each with a separate newsroom.

What Chron Covers

Chron describes its mission as focusing on stories that capture local culture and spark conversation. Its coverage areas include trending sports, food and entertainment, travel, local TV personalities, real estate, space and more — a mix that reflects Houston itself: a sprawling, diverse Gulf Coast metropolis that is home to NASA's Johnson Space Center, a major energy industry, and one of the most varied restaurant scenes in the United States.

In practice, the site's report spans breaking and trending news from across Houston and Texas, Houston sports, restaurants and food culture, entertainment and local television, travel around Texas and the Gulf Coast, the region's real-estate market, and space news from the city's NASA community. Hearst describes Chron.com as the go-to destination for metro and regional readers who are curious about what is new in Houston and what is affecting culture and life in the Bayou City.

A Digital-First Newsroom

Chron's newsroom is organized for speed and audience response in a way that differs visibly from a traditional newspaper's. Hearst's own recruitment for the site describes trending-news reporters who pitch and report a dozen or more short news pieces a week, work early shifts that begin with identifying the morning's critical breaking stories, and develop beats that deepen Chron's coverage of Houston. Editorial decisions are informed by analytics tools standard in digital newsrooms, including Chartbeat, Google Analytics, Looker and Google Trends.

The site's success measures, as set out in its editorial job descriptions, are those of a mature digital publisher: traffic performance against daily and monthly goals, mentions, links, shares and pickups of its stories by other prominent publications, reader engagement on social media, and growth in unique and loyal readers within the Houston market. Specialist roles, from sports editors responsible for long-form features and editorial franchises to Texas reporters and video fellows, sit alongside the trending-news operation.

Audience

Hearst puts Chron's audience at more than 6 million unique readers a month, drawn from Houston, its suburbs and the wider region including Galveston and the Gulf Coast. That scale makes Chron one of the most-read local news sites in the American South, and it is achieved without a subscription paywall: the site is free to read and supported by advertising, in line with its original role as Hearst's open, reach-maximizing Houston platform.

The audience shapes the journalism. Chron writes for readers who encounter news through search, social media and mobile devices, and its mix of service journalism, culture coverage and fast trending news is calibrated to a metro population checking in repeatedly through the day rather than reading a single morning edition.

Notable Coverage

Chron's religion coverage produced a story with national consequences in October 2024. Its religion reporter, Eric Killelea, reported that the pastor of Lakepointe Church in Rockwall, Texas, Josh Howerton, had instructed congregants in a sermon titled How to Vote Like Jesus on how to vote in the 2024 presidential election. The reporting drew a formal response from the Freedom From Religion Foundation, which on November 1, 2024, called on the Internal Revenue Service to investigate the church and revoke its tax-exempt privileges, arguing that the sermon intervened in the election on behalf of a campaign in violation of the rules governing 501(c)(3) organizations. As of March 1, 2025, Lakepointe Church remained designated a 501(c)(3) organization.

The episode showed the reach of Chron's beat reporting: a story produced by its Houston-based newsroom about a North Texas megachurch entered the national argument about religion, politics and tax law, and was cited by the organizations acting on it. It is the kind of coverage — culturally attuned, Texas-focused and built for wide digital distribution — that defines the site's editorial identity.

Chron and the Houston Chronicle: Two Newsrooms

Because the two publications share an owner, a city and a history, the distinction between them is worth stating plainly. The Houston Chronicle is a daily newspaper, founded in 1901, whose subscriber website is HoustonChronicle.com. Chron is a separate, digital-only news site, founded as an independent publication in 2012, whose website is Chron.com. They maintain separate newsrooms and separate staffs, and a story published by one is not a story published by the other.

Before 2012 the Chronicle's staff published on Chron.com; today they do not. Readers who want the newspaper's full report subscribe to the Chronicle's site, while Chron offers its own free-standing report, written by its own journalists in its own style. Treating the two as interchangeable misses the deliberate design of Hearst's Houston strategy.

Chron Today

Chron continues to publish around the clock from Houston as Hearst's digital-first local news source for the region, covering the news, sports, food, entertainment, travel, real estate and space stories that animate the country's fourth-largest city and its Gulf Coast hinterland. More than a decade after it became a publication in its own right, it has established a durable identity distinct from the famous newspaper it once merely hosted online.

Its history captures a pivotal moment in American local news: the early 2010s, when newspaper companies separated their free, scale-driven websites from their subscription newspaper products and built independent digital newsrooms alongside the legacy titles. Chron is one of the clearest and most successful products of that separation.
