CJAY 92

CJAY 92 (CJAY-FM) is Calgary's heritage active rock radio station — a Bell Media outlet broadcasting on 92.1 MHz with 100,000 watts. Founded June 1, 1977, by Ralph Connor, who moved to Calgary from Sudbury, Ontario, to start the station, it has been rocking the city for nearly five decades. With the slogan "CJAY 92 rocks!", the station plays active rock spanning current releases and classics, operating repeater transmitters in Banff and Invermere, British Columbia.

Overview

CJAY-FM is a commercial FM station licensed to Calgary, Alberta, owned by Bell Media through its Bell Media Radio division. It broadcasts on 92.1 MHz with 100,000 watts (Class C), with studios in the CTV Calgary studios on Patina Rise S.W. in the Prominence Point neighbourhood and a transmitter at Old Banff Coach Road and 85 Street Southwest.

The station's format is active rock, and its broadcast area spans the Calgary Metropolitan Region, with repeater transmitters in Banff (95.1), Lake Louise (97.5), and Invermere, B.C. (99.7). Sister stations in the Bell Media Calgary cluster include CKMX (Funny 1060 AM) and CIBK-FM.

History

CJAY first broadcast on June 1, 1977, founded by Ralph Connor. The station was owned by Standard Broadcasting, one of Canada's major private broadcasters, and quickly established itself as Calgary's rock station. Its morning show "Forbes and Friends," hosted by Gerry Forbes, became one of the most notable programs in Calgary radio history.

Standard Broadcasting owned the station until 2007, when Standard Radio was acquired by Astral Media as Standard exited terrestrial broadcasting. As part of Astral's merger with Bell Media on June 27, 2013, CJAY became owned by Bell Media. In September 2010, the station changed its logo and slogan and shifted its format from mainstream rock to active rock.

On June 2, 2018, CJAY's studios relocated from their Centre Street location — where they had been for 15 years — back to their original location on Broadcast Hill. The station's hosts have included Jesse Modz and JD Lewis on mornings ("CJAY Mornings with Jesse & JD"), Ashleigh Darrach, Reaper, and Tyler Janzen.

CJAY's founder story is pure prairie entrepreneurship. Ralph Connor moved to Calgary from Sudbury, Ontario, to start the station, which first broadcast June 1, 1977, on 92.1 FM with 100,000 watts — one of Calgary's first FM rock voices. Standard Broadcasting owned the station until 2007, when Astral acquired Standard Radio; the June 27, 2013 Astral-Bell Media merger brought CJAY into Bell Media, where it sits with sister stations CKMX, CIBK-FM (Virgin Radio 98.5), and CFBR-FM (The Bear, Edmonton).

The September 2010 shift from mainstream to active rock — with a new logo and slogan, mirroring then-sister CKQB-FM Ottawa — sharpened the station's edge against Corus's rock outlets. The long-running "Forbes and Friends" morning show with Gerry Forbes was for years the station's signature: juvenile comedy, contests, and Calgary-centric bits that made it appointment listening for the male-heavy audience that typically put CJAY in Calgary's top seven stations. Current lineups feature "Mornings with Jesse (Modz) and JD (Lewis)," Ashleigh Darrach, Reaper, and Tyler Janzen.

The June 2, 2018 studio move — from Centre Street (15 years) back to Broadcast Hill on Patina Rise SW, the station's original neighbourhood — was a homecoming. The 100,000-watt Class C signal from Old Banff Coach Road and 85th Street SW, plus repeaters in Banff (95.1) and Invermere, BC (99.7), with Lake Louise (97.5) also served, gives CJAY a mountain-corridor footprint few Calgary stations match. The "CJAY 92 rocks!" slogan and the 92.1 frequency have been constants through nearly five decades of Calgary rock radio.

The licensing story began with a rejection: in 1968, The Voice of the Prairies Ltd. — owner of CFCN 1060 and a division of Maclean-Hunter — was denied a licence for a new Calgary FM station on 102.1 MHz at 28,000 watts. Eight years later, in 1976, CFCN Communications won the licence for 92.1 MHz at up to 100,000 watts; a competing application from Calgary Broadcasting (CFAC) was denied, though the CRTC invited further applications for additional Calgary FM stations. Station manager Vince DiMaggio and program director Wes Erickson led the launch team.

The mountain rebroadcasters have their own history: CJAY-FM-1 Banff was authorized later in 1977 at just 0.91 watts, Lake Louise (CJAY-FM-2, 97.5 MHz, approved 1979) was operated by the Lake Louise Community Association, and CJAY-FM-3 Invermere by the Invermere District Television Co. — and CFCN Communications was eventually approved to purchase the Invermere rebroadcaster outright, having already been covering its capital maintenance costs for years. Longtime morning host Gerry Forbes marked 23 years with the station in 2016 and announced his retirement in February 2018 after 25 years at CJAY; he had started in radio in Kamloops in 1975 and worked at CFTR and CHUM Toronto before Calgary. In a beloved 1997 April Fools stunt, the CJAY and Country 105 morning teams switched places — Forbes, Jake Taylor, and Joe Sports hosting the country station's mornings while its hosts took over CJAY. The station's digital home is iheartradio.ca/cjay92, with the studio and contest line at 403-249-2592, reception at 403-240-5800, the studios at 80 Patina Rise S.W., and the @cjay92rocks social channels carrying the "CJAY 92 rocks!" identity online.

The early-1990s were a hinge point: in 1991 it emerged that Maclean-Hunter was trying to sell CJAY and CFCN-AM (the TV station was pulled off the market when no acceptable offer arrived), and on June 19, 1992, the CRTC approved the sale of CFCN-AM, CFVP shortwave, and CJAY-FM — including the Banff and Invermere transmitters — to Standard Broadcasting Corp. The 2000s brought technical upgrades: in 2001 the station was approved to drop ERP from 74,000 to 44,000 watts while raising antenna height, and in December 2002 the transmitter moved three kilometres west to the master FM antenna on the CBC tower, restoring 100,000 watts at 298.5 metres. That same September, Standard launched CIBK 98.5 and moved CFCN-AM and CJAY-FM into a new facility on the third floor of 1110 Centre Street North. One of the station's architects was Norm Haines, president of Voice of the Prairies, who took on CFCN in 1973 and developed CJAY-FM — described in his 2013 obituary as Canada's first new-generation FM station.

Programming

CJAY plays an active rock format featuring current artists alongside classic rock from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. The station's programming emphasizes personality-driven rock radio, with the morning show as its flagship. Its hosts are fixtures of Calgary's rock scene, and the station is known for its engagement with the local music community.

Coverage and Audience

CJAY's 100,000-watt signal covers the Calgary Metropolitan Region, with repeaters extending coverage into Banff, Lake Louise, and Invermere. The station has historically ranked among Calgary's top stations, typically finishing in the top seven with a male-heavy audience. It competes with Corus's rock outlets and streaming services for rock listeners.

Ownership

CJAY-FM is owned and operated by Bell Media, Canada's largest commercial broadcaster. Bell acquired the station in 2013 as part of its purchase of Astral Media. Earlier owners included founder Ralph Connor/Standard Broadcasting (1977–2007) and Astral Media (2007–2013).

Digital Presence

CJAY streams live through Bell Media's iHeartRadio Canada platform, with podcasts and show highlights available on demand. The station maintains active social media accounts promoting its hosts, concerts, and contests. The station is associated with the iheartradio.ca/cjay92/ web portal; Wikipedia lists iheartradio.ca/cjay92 as the station's official website.

The station's history — from Ralph Connor's 1977 launch through the Standard, Astral, and Bell eras — is documented by the Canadian Communications Foundation's broadcasting-history.ca project and in CRTC licensing records.
