The Cobden Timboon Coast Times is a weekly newspaper serving Cobden, Timboon and the coastal towns of Victoria's Western District, in the Corangamite Shire of south-west Victoria. Published on Wednesdays, it is the local paper of record for a dairy-farming district that stretches inland from the Twelve Apostles coast, covering communities including Cobden, Timboon, Simpson, Port Campbell, Peterborough and Princetown. Its reporting centres on the Corangamite Shire Council, agriculture, schools, community organisations and local sport, alongside the tourism economy of the Great Ocean Road hinterland.
The newspaper is published by Western District Newspapers Pty Ltd, an independent, locally owned company headquartered in Camperdown. The Australian Communications and Media Authority's Register of Eligible News Businesses records Western District Newspapers Pty Ltd (ABN 74 004 068 759) as the registered news business for five newspaper mastheads — the Camperdown Chronicle, the Cobden Timboon Coast Times, the Terang Express, the Mortlake Dispatch and the Warrnambool Weekly — with the Coast Times' registered content link given as ctctimes.com.au. The paper is also a member of the Country Press Australia network and appears in the Australian Press Council's September 2026 list of constituent publications. In January 2025 the publishing company itself changed hands, passing to two of its own long-serving staff members, a transition the company announced as a commitment to keeping the district's newspapers locally owned.
Newspaper publishing in Cobden long predates the present title. Digitised issues held through the National Library of Australia's Trove service show the town served during the First World War years by the Cobden Times and Heytesbury Advertiser, with the Cobden Times continuing in 1918; the Heytesbury name in that masthead reflects the old Heytesbury Shire, the district's former local government area centred on Cobden. The precise date on which the present Cobden Timboon Coast Times title was formed — bringing the Timboon and coastal districts into the name — is not stated in the governing records consulted for this profile, and no founding date for the current title is asserted here. What the records do establish is continuity of a Cobden-based weekly press in the district through to the present masthead.
The publishing company behind the paper, Western District Newspapers, operates from Camperdown and has owned and produced the district's titles for many years. In January 2025 the company announced that long-time staff members Jodie Welsh and Stewart Esh had taken over ownership earlier that month. Esh had first joined the business in 1988 as an apprentice compositor and was appointed managing editor in 1999; Welsh was first employed at the company as a journalist and photographer in 2006 and subsequently also took on the role of advertising manager. Announcing the change on 22 January 2025, the new owners said they valued their advertisers and readers and were "proud to keep this local business, local", adding that newspapers play a vital role in local communities. The Australian Communications and Media Authority register names Stewart James Esh as the contact for the registered news business.
The Cobden Timboon Coast Times is built around the institutions of its district. Council reporting is a staple: a page from the edition of Wednesday 28 May 2025, for example, carried Corangamite Shire Council's responsible cat ownership campaign, setting out desexing voucher arrangements, microchipping requirements and the $83 fine for allowing cats to wander, with comment from the council's manager of environment and emergency. Shire road programs, planning matters and municipal services across the Cobden, Timboon and Simpson districts receive similar treatment.
Community and pictorial coverage is extensive. The paper reports school news, health services — the Timboon and District Healthcare Service has inserted its Quarterly newsletter into the paper for distribution to households — and the activities of service clubs, halls committees and volunteer organisations. Tourism and the coast also feature: the paper has reported on cruise ship visits to Port Campbell, including the PONANT vessel L'Austral and the question of whether passengers could be ferried ashore in rough seas, and on summer conditions at local swimming spots such as Boggy Creek. Sport is a substantial component, covering Cobden's football and netball — the Cobden Bombers' junior coaching appointments, for instance — and district clubs such as Kolora Noorat in the Warrnambool and District league. Seasonal staples include the opening of the Timboon pool season and Cobden's late-night shopping events. Content is shared across the Western District Newspapers newsroom: bylines appearing in the Coast Times, including those of Stewart Esh and Port Campbell contributors, also appear in the Camperdown Chronicle, Mortlake Dispatch and Terang Express.
The paper's audience is the population of the southern Corangamite Shire and its neighbouring districts — farming families, town residents and the coastal communities along the Port Campbell–Peterborough stretch of coast. The federal News Media Assistance Program research conducted by Deakin University, applying the Australian Local News Proximity Index, assessed the Cobden Timboon Coast Times as a Tier 2 news provider for the Camperdown area, one of a small number of outlets providing proximal local coverage to the district. No audited circulation figure for the title is published in the records consulted, and none is claimed here. The paper's reach is extended in print by inserted community publications, such as the Timboon and District Healthcare Service Quarterly, and by the community page Connecting Cobden, produced by Progressing Cobden's Organisations and Volunteers Action Group with the support of Western District Newspapers.
The newspaper publishes online at ctctimes.com.au, within the Western District Newspapers (WD News) digital platform shared by the group's mastheads. The site organises coverage by town and by section — general news, community, council and sport — and operates a subscription model: article previews invite readers to subscribe to the Cobden Timboon Coast Times to read full stories. The group also provides online editions of its print papers through the WD News website, and full-page digital editions of the Coast Times were published through the Calaméo platform in 2023 and 2024, including the editions of 20 December 2023, 7 February 2024 and 21 August 2024. The Cobden and District Historical Society has also worked with the company to make the paper available on hard drive for local research, an indication of the archive's place in the district's record-keeping.
The Cobden Timboon Coast Times is owned and published by Western District Newspapers Pty Ltd, an independent publisher based at 124 Manifold Street, Camperdown, Victoria. The group's titles are the Camperdown Chronicle, the Cobden Timboon Coast Times, the Terang Express, the Mortlake Dispatch and the Warrnambool Weekly, together with the Western District Farmer, its agricultural publication. Since January 2025 the company has been owned by Jodie Welsh and Stewart Esh, both long-serving employees who live locally; Esh serves as managing editor. The publisher retains its own printing capacity — the company notes that it operates one of very few remaining printing presses in Victoria — and contract-prints other independent publishers' newspapers, including the Nhill Free Press & Kaniva Times, North Central News and the Casterton News. The company is a Country Press Australia member, and the Coast Times is listed among the Australian Press Council's constituent publications in September 2026.
The Cobden Timboon Coast Times is published every Wednesday and is available in print across Cobden, Timboon and the surrounding district, and by subscription. Western District Newspapers' head office is at 124 Manifold Street, Camperdown, and the group can be contacted by phone on (03) 5593 1888. The newspaper's website is ctctimes.com.au, where current stories, subscription information and the group's online editions can be found. News and advertising are produced from the Camperdown office for all of the group's mastheads, including the Coast Times.
