About Colors Kannada Cinema

Colors Kannada Cinema

Colors Kannada Cinema is a Kannada-language movie channel owned by JioStar, the joint venture between Viacom18 and Disney India. Launched on 24 September 2018 by Viacom18, it was the network's second movie channel and its third channel in the Kannada market, joining the general entertainment channels Colors Kannada and Colors Super. The channel airs Kannada films round the clock, with an emphasis on blockbuster movies and television premieres, and it competes in a Kannada movie genre that includes Udaya Movies, Star Suvarna Plus and Zee Picchar.

Overview and Channel Identity

Colors Kannada Cinema is a 24-hour pay television channel dedicated to Kannada cinema. Its programming consists of Sandalwood films telecast through the day, including premieres of recent releases, alongside film-related shows such as behind-the-scenes features, trivia around films and glimpses into the lives of stars. The channel was conceived as a movie destination that would let Viacom18's Kannada bouquet serve the full spectrum of entertainment viewing — fiction on Colors Kannada, youth and variety entertainment on Colors Super, and films on Colors Kannada Cinema.

The 2018 Launch

Viacom18 announced the launch of Colors Kannada Cinema from Mumbai on 10 September 2018, and the channel unfolded its full programming schedule (FPC) from 24 September 2018. The launch was Viacom18's second regional channel launch of 2018, following its entry into the Tamil market earlier that year, and it underlined the network's aggressive expansion in regional broadcast entertainment. The announcement was made by Sudhanshu Vats, then Group CEO of Viacom18, and Ravish Kumar, then Head of Regional Entertainment at the network, who framed the channel as an important addition to Viacom18's offering and its first genre expansion in the regional space.

Viacom18's Regional Strategy

The launch of Colors Kannada Cinema was part of a deliberate strategy by Viacom18 to deepen its presence in India's regional television markets. The network had entered the movie broadcast space with Rishtey Cineplex in 2016, and Colors Kannada Cinema became its second movie channel. Executives described the move as a demonstration of the company's strategic commitment to drive regional growth aggressively, with the aim of increasing market share in both viewership and revenue in what they called the country's third-biggest regional market. The channel was also intended to create synergies across Viacom18's brands, complementing the company's portfolio across filmed entertainment production and broadcast.

Why a Movie Channel for Karnataka

Viacom18's rationale for the channel rested on the viewing habits of the Karnataka market. At the time of launch, movies contributed about 11 percent of total television viewership in Karnataka, and the regional film industry was witnessing exponential growth in content consumption across screens. The network had been acquiring Kannada film titles year on year for three years without fully utilising movies on its general entertainment channels, giving it a sizeable library to programme a dedicated channel. The Kannada film industry itself was expanding rapidly — where some five to six years earlier around 70 to 80 Kannada films were made annually, that number had grown substantially — creating a steady pipeline of titles for television.

Programming and Film Library

Colors Kannada Cinema launched with a library of blockbuster Kannada movies and a stated focus on premiering films on television. Beyond films, the channel's programming mix includes behind-the-scenes features, trivia segments around films and sneak peeks into the homes of stars, designed to give viewers reasons to stay with the channel around its movie telecasts. The emphasis on premieres reflected the network's history of doing film premieres in the market and the growing appetite for first-on-television movie events among Kannada viewers. The channel's schedule is built to serve family viewing, with films positioned as appointment viewing through the week.

The Competitive Landscape at Launch

When Colors Kannada Cinema went on air, it entered a Kannada movie genre that already had three established players: Udaya Movies from Sun Network, Public Movies, and Star Suvarna Plus from the Star network. Viacom18's entry intensified competition in the genre, with each channel drawing on its parent network's film library and acquisition pipeline. The genre has since grown further with the launch of Zee Picchar in March 2020, which became the first Kannada movie channel with a high-definition feed. Within this competitive set, Colors Kannada Cinema's differentiator has been the backing of the Colors Kannada network's library and its premiere-led programming.

Colors Kannada: The Network Context

Colors Kannada Cinema sits within one of the strongest regional bouquets in Karnataka. Colors Kannada, Viacom18's flagship Kannada general entertainment channel, was the market leader in the Kannada genre at the time of the movie channel's launch, and together with the second GEC Colors Super (launched in July 2016), the network commanded a 46 percent viewership share in the genre. That dominance gave the movie channel a powerful launchpad: a large existing audience base, established advertiser relationships and a deep bench of acquired film titles. The three-channel Kannada bouquet allowed Viacom18 to offer viewers and advertisers a complete Kannada entertainment package.

Leadership Vision Behind the Channel

The launch statements from Viacom18's leadership set out the channel's ambition. Group CEO Sudhanshu Vats described Colors Kannada Cinema as an important addition to the network's offering and a first in genre expansion in the regional space, linking it to the company's goal of widening its presence as it drove regional growth. Head of Regional Entertainment Ravish Kumar emphasised the network's strategy of making significant inroads to achieve market leadership with its regional portfolio, noting that movies played an important part in viewership in the Karnataka market and that the channel was launching at an opportune moment for regional cinema consumption. Both executives stressed the commitment to expanding vertically to offer more segmented and wholesome entertainment to viewers.

The JioStar Era

Colors Kannada Cinema is today part of JioStar, the joint venture formed by the combination of Viacom18 and Disney India's media businesses. The merger brought together two of the largest regional portfolios in Indian television, placing the Colors Kannada bouquet — including Colors Kannada Cinema — under the same corporate umbrella as the Star Suvarna channels, which had previously been its direct competitors in the Kannada market. Under JioStar, the channel continues to operate as the network's Kannada movie offering, and its programming feeds into the broader JioStar festive premiere strategy across languages.

Distribution and Availability

Colors Kannada Cinema is distributed as a pay television channel across direct-to-home and cable platforms in India, with its primary audience in Karnataka. The channel's content is also available through JioHotstar, the JioStar streaming platform, extending its film library to digital viewers. As part of the Viacom18-turned-JioStar bouquet, the channel benefits from the distribution muscle of one of India's largest broadcast networks, ensuring carriage on the major DTH operators serving the Karnataka market.

Role in the Kannada Film Ecosystem

Television remains a crucial window for Kannada cinema, and channels like Colors Kannada Cinema play a significant role in the economics of the Sandalwood industry. Satellite rights for Kannada films are an important revenue stream for producers, and the competition among movie channels for premiere titles drives acquisition activity in the market. By adding a well-funded buyer to the genre, the launch of Colors Kannada Cinema in 2018 contributed to the competitive dynamics of film acquisition in Karnataka, benefiting producers while giving viewers more premiere-led movie programming on television.
