About Colors

Overview

Colors is a Hindi-language general entertainment television channel based in Mumbai, India, launched on 21 July 2008. Owned originally by Viacom18 Media Private Limited, a joint venture between Viacom Inc. and Network18 Group, it is today part of JioStar, the joint venture formed in November 2024 by merging Viacom18 with Disney's Star India. Colors made television history by breaking Star Plus's near-decade-long dominance of the Hindi GEC space within its first year, powered by Balika Vadhu and Bigg Boss. Known for socially conscious fiction, high-voltage reality shows and bold programming choices, Colors has been one of India's top two Hindi entertainment channels for most of its existence. Its official website is colorstv.com.

History and Launch

Colors was launched on 21 July 2008 by Viacom18, the 50:50 joint venture between the American media company Viacom and Raghav Bahl's Network18 group. The launch was led by Rajesh Kamat as group COO of Viacom18, with Ashvini Yardi heading programming. Entering a market dominated by Star Plus, Zee TV and Sony, Colors adopted an aggressive strategy: big-budget fiction with social themes, marquee reality properties, and heavy marketing. The gamble paid off spectacularly. Within months, Balika Vadhu, its launch-day fiction property about child marriage, became a national talking point, and by early 2009 Colors had overtaken Star Plus to become the number-one Hindi GEC, a position it held for extended stretches. No new GEC before or since has risen so fast.

Ownership: Viacom18 to JioStar

Colors was the flagship channel of Viacom18, in which Viacom (later Paramount Global) and Network18 were equal partners at launch. Over the years Network18, controlled by Reliance Industries since 2014, increased its stake, and Paramount exited the Indian television business. In November 2024 Viacom18 merged with Star India to form JioStar, majority-owned by Reliance Industries with Disney as a significant minority partner. Colors and its historic rival Star Plus thus came under common ownership, consolidating the top two Hindi GECs in a single company. The channel's headquarters is in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The JioStar combine also owns the JioHotstar streaming platform, giving Colors shows massive digital distribution.

Balika Vadhu and Socially Conscious Fiction

Balika Vadhu, which premiered on 21 July 2008, the day of the channel's launch, was a landmark in Indian television: a daily soap centred on the issue of child marriage in rural Rajasthan, anchored by the child actor Avika Gor as Anandi. The show ran for over 2,000 episodes until 2016 and won the channel both ratings and critical respect, demonstrating that socially relevant storytelling could succeed commercially. Colors followed with other issue-driven fiction including Uttaran (2008), about class divides; Na Aana Is Des Laado (2009), on female infanticide; and later Naagin (2015), Ekta Kapoor's supernatural saga that became a blockbuster franchise. The channel's fiction identity balanced progressive themes with the melodrama Hindi audiences expect.

Bigg Boss and Reality Television

Bigg Boss, the Indian adaptation of Big Brother, premiered on Colors on 3 November 2008 with Arshad Warsi as host and became the channel's most valuable property. Salman Khan took over as host from season 4 and has fronted the show ever since, making it one of the longest-running and most-discussed reality shows in India. The show's combination of celebrity contestants, manufactured conflict and audience voting generates enormous social media buzz and advertising revenue each season. Colors also launched Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi, the stunt-based reality show that premiered in 2008 with Akshay Kumar as host, which has run for many successful seasons. Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, the celebrity dance show, and India's Got Talent have also aired on the channel.

Flagship Fiction: Naagin, Uttaran and Beyond

Beyond Balika Vadhu, Colors built a formidable fiction bench. Uttaran (2008-2015) was a long-running saga of two friends from different classes. Sasural Simar Ka (2011-2018) became one of the channel's longest-running shows. Naagin, which premiered on 1 November 2015, launched a supernatural franchise that has run through multiple seasons with different casts, becoming a ratings blockbuster and spawning imitators across GECs. Recent hits include Udaariyaan, and the channel has continued to experiment with finite series and new genres. Colors' fiction strategy has been to mix long-running family sagas with seasonal event properties, keeping the prime-time line-up fresh while retaining loyal audiences.

Market Position and the GEC Wars

Colors has been locked in a two-way battle with Star Plus for Hindi GEC leadership for most of its history, with Zee TV and Sony as secondary contenders. After its initial surge, the channel settled into a pattern of trading the top spot with Star Plus, leading during Bigg Boss seasons and major fiction launches. The channel's ratings strength made it Viacom18's most valuable asset and a premium advertising property. The 2024 merger of Colors and Star Plus under JioStar ended the most storied rivalry in Indian television, giving one company control of the top two Hindi GECs. Industry observers expect the combined entity to rationalise programming while maintaining both brands' distinct identities.

HD Feed and the Colors Network

Colors HD was launched on 24 October 2011, bringing the channel's high-production fiction and reality shows to high-definition viewers. The Colors brand extends to a family of channels including Colors Rishtey, Rishtey Cineplex, Colors Cineplex, Colors Infinity (English entertainment), and regional GECs such as Colors Marathi, Colors Gujarati, Colors Bangla, Colors Kannada, Colors Tamil, Colors Telugu and Colors Odia. This makes Colors one of India's most extensive entertainment brand families. The channel is distributed across all DTH and cable platforms in India and internationally for the diaspora. The breadth of the Colors network gives the group significant leverage with distributors and advertisers, and makes Colors one of the most widely distributed Indian entertainment brands worldwide.

Digital and Streaming

Colors shows were central to the growth of Voot, Viacom18's streaming platform launched in 2016, which built a large audience on catch-up viewing of Bigg Boss, Naagin and other properties. Bigg Boss OTT, a digital-exclusive edition, extended the franchise to streaming audiences. Following the JioStar merger, Colors content streams on JioHotstar, India's largest streaming platform, alongside Star Plus shows. Same-day digital premieres and exclusive streaming content have made the channel's properties available to younger, mobile-first audiences. The digital afterlife of Colors shows, particularly Bigg Boss clips and Naagin episodes, generates billions of views across platforms.

Cultural Impact and Legacy

Colors changed Indian television by proving that a new entrant could topple an entrenched leader through bold content choices. Balika Vadhu brought the issue of child marriage into millions of homes and is credited with influencing public discourse on the subject. Bigg Boss created the template for celebrity reality television in India and made Salman Khan's hosting persona iconic, with each season dominating prime-time conversation for months. The channel also pioneered the weekend reality-event model that rivals later copied, using big-ticket non-fiction to spike ratings between fiction launches. The channel's willingness to take risks, from supernatural fiction to socially progressive themes, expanded the creative boundaries of Hindi GECs. Short-form clips of Bigg Boss confrontations routinely trend on social media during each season, extending the show's cultural conversation far beyond its television audience. As part of JioStar, Colors enters a new phase, but its legacy as the channel that broke the Star Plus monopoly and redefined Hindi entertainment remains secure.
