About Couch

Couch

Couch is Germany's interiors-and-fashion magazine in pocket format. Published in Hamburg by Gruner + Jahr, it deliberately fills the gap between classic home magazines and young lifestyle titles: living and furnishing meet beauty and fashion on pages aimed at young, modern women between 20 and 39. Its tagline — "Dein Lieblingsort für Living, Fashion & Beauty" (your favourite place for living, fashion and beauty) — describes a brand that lives across print, web and social media.

Overview

The concept addresses a readership that classic interiors magazines were missing: women furnishing their first own apartments, interested in interior trends and decoration but also in fashion and beauty, and accustomed to discovering both on Instagram rather than in a traditional shelter magazine. Couch answers with a compact, portable format and an editorial mix that treats the apartment, the wardrobe and the beauty shelf as one lifestyle continuum. The print magazine appears eight times a year at a cover price of 4.20 euros, and is also sold in Austria (3.30 euros), Switzerland (4.60 francs), Luxembourg (3.50 euros), Spain and Italy (3.90 euros) and Czechia (110 koruna). The pocket format — a smaller trim size than the classic shelter magazines — and the low cover price position Couch as an impulse buy for the newsstand and the handbag rather than a considered annual subscription, matching the spontaneous media habits of its young readership.

History

Couch was developed within the Gruner + Jahr living portfolio as a younger sibling to the venerable Schöner Wohnen. The strategic logic was generational: while Schöner Wohnen, founded in 1960, serves established homeowners, Couch speaks to readers at the beginning of their furnishing biography — the first apartment, the first deliberate interior choices. The two titles share editorial leadership: since 1 December 2020 Christina Gath has directed both newsrooms as Editorial Director Living.

The magazine's resilience was demonstrated in February 2023, when the RTL Deutschland management announced it would discontinue or sell 23 Gruner + Jahr titles, cutting some 700 jobs — a retrenchment that fell mostly on administration but also emptied the iconic press building at Hamburg's Baumwall, with the remaining teams relocating to the HafenCity district on Koreastraße. Couch was explicitly among the survivors: the core portfolio retained comprised Stern, Geo, Capital, Brigitte, Gala, Schöner Wohnen, Häuser and Couch, with Eltern and Chefkoch continuing digitally. That the group's new owners kept the young living title while closing many larger ones testifies to the brand's strategic value as the entry point to the living segment — the magazine that recruits the readers Schöner Wohnen will serve for the next forty years.

Content and Concept

The editorial programme, as presented in the publisher's media documents, revolves around the things the target group loves: home stories with young apartments, energy-saving tricks, DIY tips for hobby gardeners, balcony planning with professional decoration ideas, lighting concepts, and trend colours — one recent issue rode the pink "Barbiecore" wave. Recurring cover lines such as "Die Dinge, die wir lieben" (the things we love) promise shoppable inspiration: handbags, sunglasses, dresses alongside poufs, baskets and plants. The "Greenterior" trend — plants in every room — gets the full treatment, from floral decoration tips and watering guides to plant typologies ranging from "plant parent" to "monstera mom".

Seasonal issues extend the concept: summer numbers promise holiday feeling at home with bikinis, raffia bags, beach clubs, rooftop bars and festivals; others explore glamping vibes for the bedroom or Scandinavian beach-house aesthetics. The tone is playful, fast and visually dense — closer to a lifestyle feed than to the stately room portraits of the classic shelter press. Recent cover themes documented in the publisher's media kit read like a diary of young urban aspirations: "Wohnen wie im Urlaub" (living like on holiday), "Happy Place", "Machen jedes Bad Strandtag" (make every bathroom a beach day), "Stadtoase" (city oasis), "Hofidylle" (courtyard idyll), "Haus am Meer" (house by the sea), "Vanlife-Romantik", "Drei Wow-Wohnungen" (three wow apartments), "Ruckzuck-Chic mit Poufs und Körben" (instant chic with poufs and baskets), "Boatlife – Ferien in Deutschland auf dem Wasser" (holidays on German waters), "Sommerlich einrichten" (furnishing for summer), the "Greenterior" favourite trend, aqua colours "vom Meer inspiriert", pool art, professional balcony planning, and — for the life beyond the apartment — "Digital Dating" and "Kennenlern-Strategien". Fashion pages present "Die besten des Sommers" (the best of summer): handbags, sunglasses, dresses. The magazine's trend radar moves quickly: one season's "Barbiecore" pink gives way to the next season's plant-filled "Greenterior" and back again.

A distinctive editorial product is the cross-media "challenge": themed campaigns such as the #Happy-Hosting-Challenge (April 2026), the #Scandi-Challenge (June 2026) and the #Living-Challenge (September 2026) combine online articles on couchstyle.de with homepage teasers, Instagram posts and stories, Facebook posts and newsletter features. The challenges turn furnishing topics into participatory events and can be booked together with the sister brands Schöner Wohnen and Living at Home. The commercial packaging is correspondingly modern: the publisher sells online challenge integrations from 600 euros (basis) to 1,650 euros (premium challenge), and cross-media packages combining online and print from 2,500 to 4,500 euros, each plus a prize provision of at least 300 euros — the giveaway mechanics that drive participation in the brand's community.

Coverage and Audience

Publisher media data sketches a precisely defined community. The print edition reaches 148,000 readers with 62,000 distributed copies. The online platform couchstyle.de records 160,000 unique users, 260,000 visits and 829,000 page impressions per month; the brand counts 177,000 followers on one major social network, 182,000 on another and 11,000 newsletter recipients (sources: IVW 03/2024, IVW Q1/2023, ma Presse II/2025 and publisher data).

The audience profile: 78 percent female, 22 percent male; 13 percent aged 14–29, 50 percent aged 30–49 and 37 percent over 50; 75 percent with higher or intermediate education; 67 percent with more than 3,000 euros of monthly household net income at their disposal. The publisher calls couchstyle.de the most relevant living, fashion and beauty platform in Germany and "the favourite place of bloggers and influencers" — a claim that reflects the brand's function as a meeting point between editorial content, commerce and the creator economy.

Ownership

Couch is published by Gruner + Jahr in Hamburg, the publishing house founded in 1965 by Richard Gruner, John Jahr and Gerd Bucerius. After Bertelsmann built its stake from 1969 to full ownership in 2014, RTL Deutschland acquired the company for 230 million euros in August 2021, completing the deal on 11 January 2022; Gruner + Jahr continues as a brand of RTL Deutschland, later renamed RTL Publishing. The Hamburg teams, long based in the iconic press building at Baumwall, relocated to the HafenCity district. Within the surviving core portfolio, Couch holds the young-living position alongside the flagship Schöner Wohnen and the architecture title Häuser.

Digital Presence

The brand's digital home, couchstyle.de, is integral to the concept rather than an add-on: the publisher presents Couch as a print-online-social brand, with the website carrying the challenges, shopping content and community features that the pocket-format magazine teasers. Teasers, newsletters and social-media posts lead users directly to extensive online articles, and the social channels extend the magazine's trend coverage between the eight print issues. For a generation that discovers interiors on phones, Couch offers the classic magazine virtues — curation, photography, expertise — in the formats and rhythms of the feed era. The pocket format and the eight-issues-a-year rhythm keep Couch close to its young urban readership — a magazine designed to be carried, shared and lived with, online and off.
