About CPhI China

CPhI China

CPhI China, staged together with its sister show P-MEC China as CPhI & P-MEC China, is Asia's largest pharmaceutical trade event. Held annually at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC), it is hosted by Informa Markets with the China Chamber of Commerce for Import & Export of Medicines & Health Products (CCCMHPIE) and co-organised by Sinoexpo Informa Markets. Introduced into China in 2001 with a focus on active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), it is the longest-running CPhI event after CPhI Worldwide and the second largest in the global CPhI network. Its nineteenth edition in June 2019 filled all seventeen SNIEC halls at over 200,000 square metres, with 3,246 exhibitors and 66,569 visitors, and its role — connecting Chinese pharmaceutical manufacturers with worldwide buyers — has grown with China's place in the world pharmaceutical supply chain.

Introduction into China in 2001

CPhI China was introduced into China in 2001, starting with the display of API products. The timing was strategic: China was becoming the world's workshop for bulk pharmaceutical chemicals and intermediates, and its manufacturers needed a professional platform at which to meet regulated-market buyers. The CPhI brand, originating with CPhI Worldwide in Europe, supplied an internationally recognised format and buyer network. Organiser accounts of the twentieth anniversary in 2020 summarised the mission as showing the pharmaceutical strength of China to the world and helping Chinese pharmaceutical enterprises to go international. Over two decades the event grew from an API showcase into an integrated platform connecting the entire pharmaceutical industry chain, from APIs and finished dosages to machinery and packaging — a trajectory organisers explicitly link to the transformation from Chinese pharmaceutical manufacturing to Chinese pharmaceutical brands.

Hosts: Informa Markets and CCCMHPIE

The event is hosted by Informa Markets, the exhibitions business that inherited the CPhI network through UBM, together with the China Chamber of Commerce for Import & Export of Medicines & Health Products, and co-organised by Sinoexpo Informa Markets. CCCMHPIE's role is central to the show's trade function: as the national chamber for medicines and health products import and export, it represents the Chinese pharmaceutical trading community and connects the exhibition to export policy and practice. Informa Markets supplies the global CPhI brand system, international sales and the network of sister events. The partnership has endured through the event's whole history — the 2015 edition was already described as hosted by UBM EMEA and CCCMHPIE and co-organised by UBM Sinoexpo — giving exhibitors an unusually stable organising structure for a Chinese trade fair of this size.

P-MEC China: the machinery sister show from 2006

P-MEC China was added in 2006, for pharmaceutical machinery, at the moment when Good Manufacturing Practice certification was rising in importance for Chinese producers. Its growth quantifies the upgrading of Chinese pharmaceutical manufacturing: from 1,437 square metres and 99 exhibitors at its first edition to nearly 73,000 square metres and over 940 exhibitors by 2019. P-MEC's segment zones expanded to cover the manufacturing chain, including InnoPack for packaging and drug delivery, LABWorld China for laboratory equipment, EP & Clean Tech for cleanroom and environmental protection technology, P-Logi for logistics and storage, and automation and informatisation zones. Staging CPhI and P-MEC together means a visitor can source ingredients, finished products, production machinery, packaging, laboratory systems and logistics in one complex — the combined platform's core proposition, reflected in the joint branding used for all recent editions.

Venue: Shanghai New International Expo Centre

CPhI & P-MEC China is held at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre in Pudong. By 2019 the event filled all seventeen of SNIEC's halls, a physical maximum that underlines both its scale and the venue's suitability: large, standardised halls for thousands of booths, plus the conference facilities for more than seventy on-site events. Shanghai is the natural host city — a centre of pharmaceutical research, headquarters and trading activity, with the country's busiest international business-travel connections. The June timing has become fixed in the global pharmaceutical calendar, positioned within the CPhI network's worldwide sequence and associated with China Pharma Week activities. For overseas visitors, numbering over twenty thousand visits in 2019, the combination of a single familiar venue and a comprehensive show reduces the cost and complexity of a China sourcing trip to one visit.

Scale: editions of 2015, 2018 and 2019

The event's recent scale is precisely documented. The fifteenth anniversary edition in June 2015 hosted over 2,600 companies across 150,000 square metres, welcomed more than 64,000 visitors and staged over 70 on-site conferences, alongside the concurrent Fi Asia China. The 2018 edition reached 180,000 square metres with 3,022 exhibitors and 60,744 visits, including 15,329 international visits — an increase of over fifty percent in overseas attendance on 2017 — and more than 100 conferences and activities. The nineteenth edition, in June 2019, set the pre-pandemic records: over 200,000 square metres covering all seventeen halls, 3,246 exhibitors and 66,569 visitors, including 20,302 overseas visits from over 140 countries and regions. The twentieth edition in 2020 was planned at 210,000 square metres with over 3,400 exhibitors and 75,000 professional visits expected. Few pharmaceutical exhibitions anywhere publish figures of this order.

Co-located brands and the whole industry chain

The combined platform integrates a family of co-located brands. Alongside CPhI's API, intermediates, finished dosage and related zones and P-MEC's machinery halls, the event has included InnoPack for pharmaceutical packaging and drug delivery, LABWorld China for laboratory and analytical equipment, EP & Clean Tech for clean technology, P-Logi for pharmaceutical logistics, and Fi Asia China for food ingredients in concurrent staging, with earlier editions also presenting ICSE for contract services, NEX for natural extracts and BioPh China for biopharmaceuticals. The architecture reflects how pharmaceutical sourcing actually works: a buyer rarely purchases an ingredient in isolation from questions of manufacturing capability, packaging, quality systems and logistics. By assembling every link under one roof and one brand system, the organisers convert a set of adjacent trade shows into a single industry-chain marketplace, which is the platform's most-cited advantage in its own reporting.

Conferences and China Pharma Week

The conference programme is extensive: over 70 on-site conferences at the 2015 edition and over 100 conferences and activities by 2018, covering contract services, environmental protection and clean technology, packaging and drug delivery, and market and regulatory questions. Named summits in organiser reports include the P-MEC Summit and the International Summit for Pharmaceutical Packaging & Drug Delivery System, and buyer-side programming such as the CPhI Buyers Sourcing Event, which brought international buyers into structured meetings with exhibitors. The event also anchors China Pharma Week, extending its content beyond the exhibition days. This programme depth matters because the show's audience is senior: sourcing executives, quality and regulatory specialists and manufacturing leadership attend for intelligence on standards, capacity and policy as much as for purchasing, and the conference system gives the platform influence over industry discussion disproportionate even to its large floor.

Connecting Chinese pharma with world buyers

The event's defining function is connection between Chinese supply and global demand. Organisers describe CPhI China as unique in the connection it brings to overseas markets and as an important link between Chinese pharmaceutical enterprises and worldwide buyers. The overseas attendance data support the claim: 20,302 overseas visits from over 140 countries and regions in 2019, with overseas buyer numbers reported to have grown by 225 percent in the four years before 2020. Named exhibitors for the 2020 cycle included international and Chinese leaders such as BASF, DFE Pharma, Sanofi, North China Pharmaceutical, Huahai Pharmaceutical, Fosun Pharma and Hengrui, illustrating the two-way character of the floor: multinationals selling into China exhibit beside Chinese manufacturers selling to the world. China's accession to the International Council for Harmonisation in 2017, noted in the event's own coverage, raised the regulatory stakes of that exchange, as Chinese producers competed increasingly in regulated markets.

Position in the global CPhI network

Within the CPhI network, China holds a senior position: after CPhI Worldwide, it is the longest-running CPhI event and the second largest. The network's other regional editions — in North America, Korea, Japan, Thailand and India among them — operate at smaller scales or with narrower remits. CPhI China's standing reflects China's structural role in pharmaceuticals as the leading source of APIs and intermediates and the world's second-largest pharmaceutical market. The event's own fifteenth-anniversary commentary observed that CPhI and the pharmaceutical industry in China had become inseparable drivers of each other's development. That mutual dependence explains the stability of the June Shanghai fixture: the global industry plans around it because the supply base is there, and the supply base exhibits there because the global industry attends.

Significance and outlook

CPhI China's significance rests on verified scale and function. Introduced in 2001, joined by P-MEC in 2006, hosted by Informa Markets and CCCMHPIE at SNIEC, it reached over 200,000 square metres, 3,246 exhibitors and 66,569 visitors at its nineteenth edition, with overseas visits above twenty thousand from more than 140 countries. It integrates ingredients, finished products, machinery, packaging, laboratory, clean technology and logistics brands into one industry-chain platform, supported by a conference programme of more than one hundred activities. As Chinese pharmaceuticals move from bulk manufacturing toward brands, innovation and regulated-market depth, CPhI & P-MEC China remains the event at which that industry presents itself to the world — and at which the world, in person and in numbers, comes to inspect it.
