About Crosspool News

Crosspool News

Crosspool News is the online news service of crosspool.info, the community website for Crosspool, a residential suburb in the west of Sheffield, South Yorkshire. The site describes itself as the Crosspool community website run by the Crosspool Forum, the neighbourhood body whose quarterly magazine, the Crosspool Clarion, is delivered to more than 2,500 local households. Between the website and the Clarion, the Forum operates one of the most complete community news operations of any Sheffield suburb: meeting minutes, planning news, letters, advertisements, event coverage and long-running campaigns about the suburb's streets, fields and public spaces, published both in print and online.

Run by the Crosspool Forum

The publisher behind Crosspool News is the Crosspool Forum. The site's own strapline identifies crosspool.info as the community website run by the Forum, and the Clarion's Spring 2011 edition — Volume 8, Issue 1 — billed itself on its cover as the official newsletter of the Crosspool Forum, carrying the crosspool.info web address. The Forum's open meetings are part of the content loop: reports of open meeting minutes, together with items of local interest, letters and advertisements, are published in the quarterly Crosspool Clarion magazine and also on the crosspool.info website, so decisions and discussions from the suburb's public meetings reach residents whether or not they attended.

That structure distinguishes Crosspool News from a personal blog. It is the publishing arm of an organised neighbourhood forum, with a print magazine, a meeting cycle and a website feeding one another — the website carrying news between the Clarion's quarterly appearances, and the Clarion giving the website's material a physical presence in thousands of homes.

The Crosspool Clarion, in print and online

The Clarion gives the operation its longevity. By the spring of 2011 the magazine had already reached Volume 8, and it was still publishing more than a decade later: the winter 2025 issue, Volume 22, Issue 4, was posted on crosspool.info for residents to download and read, with back issues of past editions also available on the site. The winter 2025 Clarion incorporated the newsletter of St Columba's and Stephen Hill churches, reflecting how the magazine acts as a shared platform for the suburb's institutions as well as the Forum itself.

Wikipedia's account of Crosspool records that the Clarion is delivered to over 2,500 local households — a reach, for a single suburb, that many commercial local papers would envy — and that its content spans the Forum's open meeting minutes, local interest items, letters and advertising. The 2011 edition shows the texture of that mix: licensing and planning notices for local pubs such as the Old Grindstone in Crookes, letters from residents and charities, and appeals from citywide services seeking donations and volunteers through the Clarion's readership.

Planning and development coverage

Planning has always been central to the site's news. Its deep archive — the news index runs to well over 180 pages of posts — includes, from 2012, coverage of the threat to Williamson Hardware in neighbouring Broomhill, a shop that had traded on Fulwood Road for 52 years and faced being forced to move to make way for a supermarket, with residents directed to the city council's planning portal to comment on the application. The same era's pages carried the annual Hallam Chase, the handicap fell race organised by the Hallamshire Harriers from the Sandygate ground, whose records stretch back to the 1860s.

This planning-and-place reporting is the site's watchdog function: applications, road schemes and land-use changes affecting a small suburb are translated into plain local terms, with the relevant reference numbers, deadlines and contacts that residents need in order to respond.

Land, food and the Carver Fields story

The site's recent coverage shows that role continuing. In May 2026 Crosspool News reported an update on Carver Fields, where Yorkshire Water had confirmed it would install a large underground water-storage tank on part of the fields using statutory powers, a project expected to take approximately 18 months with excavation, soil removal and periods of restricted access; the report gave the utility's customer line and reference for enquiries and noted that the Methodist Church in Sheffield was keeping a coordinated overview of community concerns.

The same coverage announced a partnership with Food Works, the Sheffield food organisation, which would begin using the top paddock at Carver Fields for growing and community activity, developing in phases from relationship-building and an open picnic to growing beds and seasonal projects. By August 2026 the site was promoting Food Works' summer campaign to build a bigger table — transforming the underused fields into a community growing space — and reporting the ambition, launched from Crosspool, of a city where every neighbourhood has nature-rich spaces growing food, with the land offered by the Methodist Circuit and Sheffield's first nature-rich, community-led food-growing site envisaged at the fields.

Transport and road safety reporting

Road safety is another recurring beat. In March 2026 the site reported that the Minister for Local Transport, Lilian Greenwood, who holds responsibility for road safety, had joined the Crookes and Crosspool councillors on an inspection of Crosspool streets, visiting Benty Lane at its junction with Manchester Road, near the site of a recent serious incident. The report set out the government's new Road Safety Strategy — the first such plan in over a decade — including action on speeding, drink and drug driving, seat belts and mobile phones, and recorded the councillors' account of local measures: a new 20mph limit coming to Crookes to add to those already rolled out across Crosspool, a community speed-watch group, and a reported fifteen percent fall in people killed or seriously injured on Sheffield's roads.

Events and everyday community life

Alongside campaigns, Crosspool News carries the suburb's social calendar. Its autumn 2026 pages promoted the Crookes Street Market on Colchester Road, with stalls from jewellery and ceramics to street food; a community occasion at the new-look Sportsman pub in Crosspool, with local stalls, children's activities and a collection for the homelessness charity Social Bite added to customers' orders; and practical guidance on the road closures and diversions for the Sheffield 10K, whose route runs from Arundel Gate past Endcliffe Park, the botanical gardens and Ecclesall Road. This service information — what is on, where, and how the roads will be affected — is the daily usefulness on which hyperlocal sites build their audiences.

The suburb the site serves

Crosspool itself is a suburb about 4 kilometres — two and a half miles — west of Sheffield city centre, in an elevated position around 200 metres above sea level above the Porter and Rivelin valleys. It stands on the A57 Manchester Road and is the last suburb on that highway before the city boundary and open countryside. It is characterised in sociological literature as a middle-class residential suburb, and administratively it straddles the Crookes, Fulwood and Broomhill wards — one reason a forum-run news service is valuable, since the neighbourhood's civic business is split across ward boundaries. The area is home to the Sandygate ground of Hallam FC and to the Hallam Chase, and Sebastian Coe, the Olympic gold-medal-winning middle-distance runner, was brought up in Crosspool and attended Tapton School.

A wider community calendar

The website sits within a busy community calendar that it helps to publicise. A summer fayre has been held in Crosspool every year since 2003, in July, alongside car boot sales in June and September, and a festival first organised in 2010 went on to become an annual event. Events of that kind — village activities run by local groups — are the raw material of both the Clarion and the website, and the reason the Forum's publications can fill a quarterly magazine and a frequently updated news site from one suburb's life.

Longevity and role

Few British suburbs sustain their own news service for over two decades, but the evidence of the Clarion's volume numbers — Volume 8 in 2011, Volume 22 in 2025 — and of a news archive stretching back to at least 2012 shows Crosspool's Forum doing exactly that. Crosspool News is best understood as the digital half of that institution: the place where meeting minutes become public record, where a water company's tank, a minister's visit, a church-linked magazine and a street market all receive the same careful, local attention.
