About Da Vinci

Da Vinci is an ad-free educational television channel for children and families, broadcasting science, nature and learning programming from its base in Berlin, Germany. Launched on 15 September 2007 as Da Vinci Learning by Da Vinci Media GmbH, the channel was created to turn television into a learning experience, covering subjects from science, technology, engineering and mathematics to history, culture and the natural world. After a 2023 merger of its Da Vinci Learning and Da Vinci Kids services into a single channel, Da Vinci now reaches a reported 250 million households worldwide across linear television, streaming and on-demand platforms. In the United Kingdom it is available on TalkTalk channel 954. Its official website is davinci.tv.

Launch and history

Da Vinci Learning began broadcasting on 15 September 2007 as a German educational channel produced by Da Vinci Media GmbH. The service was built around a simple proposition, set out in its founding materials: that everyone is curious about how things really work, and that television could facilitate learning playfully rather than delivering dull, passive viewing. The channel’s mission was described as turning television into a meaningful experience every day and for everyone, with viewers encouraged to participate in finding answers to questions about the world around them.

The channel expanded quickly across Central and Eastern Europe. Da Vinci Learning launched in Romania on 1 March 2008, and satellite distribution deals followed: Germany’s Da Vinci Media GmbH selected Spacecom’s AMOS-3 satellite to distribute the channel across Hungary, Romania, Poland, Slovenia, Ukraine and Bulgaria, with the service uplinked via Budapest. The channel refreshed its branding in November 2009 and again in September 2012, when it introduced separate logos for children and for parents, switched to the 16:9 widescreen format in April 2014, and launched a high-definition version in September 2015. In January 2018 the network split its output, moving children’s programming to a dedicated Da Vinci Kids service in the evenings while Da Vinci Learning focused on educational and documentary programming for parents. The two services were merged back into a single channel, Da Vinci, on 1 February 2023, with a refreshed logo and idents introduced in 2019 carried into the unified brand.

Ownership

Da Vinci is owned and operated by Da Vinci Media GmbH, a Berlin-based media company specialising in educational television. The company produces and curates the channel’s programming in Germany and distributes localised versions of the service to pay-television platforms, broadcasters and streaming services around the world. The channel’s commercial model is built on carriage and licensing agreements with platform operators rather than on advertising: the linear channel is broadcast without commercial breaks, a deliberate choice intended to preserve an uninterrupted learning environment for young viewers and to differentiate the service from advertising-funded children’s channels.

Educational philosophy

The channel takes its name and its inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci, the Renaissance artist, scientist and inventor whose curiosity across disciplines the brand seeks to embody. Its programming is organised around the wonder of human curiosity and exploration, whether in science, the arts or innovation, and is designed to deliver what the industry calls edutainment: content that amuses and delights while carrying meaningful educational takeaways. The channel’s own description of its purpose, “education without effort, simply by watching TV,” captures an approach that treats learning as a by-product of engaging storytelling rather than as classroom instruction.

This philosophy shapes the channel’s commissioning and acquisitions. Programmes are selected to illustrate concepts in science, mathematics and technology, to explore history and personalities, and to foster an understanding of culture, nature and the wider world. The absence of advertising is presented as part of the educational proposition: without commercial interruptions, the channel argues, children can engage more deeply with the material, and parents can trust the viewing environment.

Programming strands

Da Vinci’s schedule is built around thematic strands covering Science, Math & Tech; Play & Make; History & Personalities; Culture; Life & Nature; and Sports & Leisure. The line-up mixes documentaries, animated series and live-action formats, all chosen for their educational value for children and for co-viewing by families. Among the channel’s flagship properties is the Becoming Xtraordinary series fronted by adventurer Bear Grylls, which has become one of the most recognisable titles on the service.

The channel’s programming partnerships extend its catalogue into specialist areas. In November 2023 the WaterBear Network, a streaming platform devoted to environmental storytelling, announced a 12-month partnership bringing its original documentaries and films to Da Vinci’s FAST channel in the United States, the United Kingdom and Ireland. The collaboration, themed “Positive Solutions for our Changing World,” featured films on sustainability, community action, conservation and wildlife preservation, including the deep-sea mining animation Extract Destroy Repeat, The Whale Who Saved Me, the story of whale biologist Nan Hauser, and Wildlife Warriors, profiling female conservationists. In 2024 the channel partnered with Wind Sun Sky’s Future Chicken franchise, an “ecotainment” property for six- to ten-year-olds centred on a time-travelling chicken, with Da Vinci developing branded quizzes for its Kahoot! learning platform, which reports more than 1.5 million active users.

Global reach

Da Vinci reports reaching 250 million households globally, a figure cited in industry coverage of its 2024 partnerships, making it one of the most widely distributed educational channels in the world. The service is carried by pay-television platforms across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Americas, with localised feeds adapted to regional audiences. In Africa the channel has been available on MultiChoice’s DStv and GOtv platforms, where Da Vinci Kids launched on channel 157 with programming spanning science, play and making, history, culture, nature and sport.

The channel’s distribution strategy combines traditional linear carriage with free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) channels and on-demand offerings, allowing it to reach viewers on connected televisions, mobile devices and streaming platforms as well as through conventional pay-TV bundles. This multi-platform approach has been central to the channel’s growth since the 2023 merger, positioning Da Vinci as an educational brand available wherever families watch video.

Streaming and digital platforms

Alongside its linear channels, Da Vinci operates streaming and on-demand services that extend its educational mission beyond scheduled television. The Da Vinci FAST channel, available in markets including the United States, the United Kingdom and Ireland, offers a free streaming version of the channel’s programming on connected-TV platforms, while the network’s apps and on-demand services allow families to watch its catalogue at their convenience.

The brand has also moved into interactive learning. Its partnership with the Kahoot! learning platform brings Da Vinci-branded quizzes to an audience of more than 1.5 million active users, extending the channel’s educational content into the classroom and the home in quiz form. The Future Chicken collaboration similarly spans television, YouTube, the Roblox gaming platform and CBC platforms, reflecting a strategy of meeting young audiences across the media they already use rather than confining the brand to the television set.

Availability in the UK

In the United Kingdom, Da Vinci is available on TalkTalk TV on channel 954, where its ad-free schedule of science, nature and learning programming offers an alternative to the advertising-funded children’s channels that dominate the British pay-television landscape. British viewers can also access the channel’s content through its FAST streaming channel and on-demand platforms, which carry its family educational programming to connected televisions and mobile devices.

The channel’s British presence forms part of its wider English-language footprint, which spans the UK, Ireland and North America through both linear distribution and streaming. For parents seeking screen time with educational value, the channel’s positioning as a commercial-free learning environment has been its consistent selling point since launch.

Reception and industry standing

Da Vinci has established itself as a recognised brand in the children’s edutainment sector, with its partnerships cited in industry publications including Kidscreen and Advanced Television. The channel’s collaboration with the WaterBear Network was presented by both parties as a natural fit between two organisations committed to informing, educating and inspiring families, while its Future Chicken deal positioned the platform as a key partner for new educational franchises seeking global reach.

The 2023 merger of Da Vinci Learning and Da Vinci Kids into a single unified channel simplified the brand for platform partners and viewers alike, consolidating nearly two decades of educational broadcasting under one name. As children’s viewing continues to migrate toward streaming and on-demand, the channel’s combination of linear carriage, FAST distribution and interactive learning products reflects an adaptation to the way modern families consume educational media.
