Dahe Daily (pinyin: Dàhé Bào; Chinese: 大河报) is a Chinese newspaper based in Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province in central China. It is one of the most representative media in Henan Province and has been described as the number-one brand in the Central Plains newspaper market and as a symbol of Henan newspapers. Dahe means “Great River,” a reference to the Yellow River, which flows across northern Henan and anchors the history and identity of the Central Plains. The paper is a comprehensive daily reflecting city life, built on the stated aims of concerning itself with people's livelihood, promoting fashion, getting close to life and serving the public. Its official website is www.dahebao.cn, and it belongs to the media system of the Henan Daily Newspaper Group, the press group of the Henan Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party.
Dahe Daily was established on 1 August 1995 by the Henan Daily Newspaper Group. Its original name was Dahe Wen Hui Bao, and it was officially renamed Dahe Daily on 1 October 1997. The paper was the metropolitan offspring of Henan Daily, the provincial Party flagship founded in 1949: where the parent paper served as the authoritative Party organ, the new title was created in the mid-1990s wave of Chinese urban newspaper launches to compete for ordinary city readers with lively, service-oriented journalism. Its creation fits the pattern set in the same period by papers such as Chengdu's West China City Daily, launched on 1 January 1995 as China's first “city newspaper” — established Party groups using their institutional strength to build market-oriented dailies for the new urban middle class. In Zhengzhou, Dahe Daily quickly became that paper, and within a decade it had overtaken every competitor in its home market.
Dahe Daily is published by the Henan Daily Newspaper Group of the Henan Provincial Committee of the Chinese Communist Party — the same group whose flagship is Henan Daily and which was formally established as the Henan Daily Press Group in 2000. The group structure explains the paper's dual character: commercially aggressive in circulation, distribution and advertising, but institutionally part of the provincial Party media system. China Media Project coverage of Journalist's Day in November 2006, for example, recorded Dahe Daily alongside Henan Daily and the group's Henan Commercial Daily running a letter from the provincial propaganda department emphasising the “correct guidance of public opinion” — a reminder that even China's most market-driven metropolitan papers operate inside the Party's media discipline. The group's wider portfolio came to include Henan Business Daily, brought under the group's supervision and sponsorship in 2004, which is described as the second-largest newspaper by circulation in Zhengzhou, behind the market Dahe Daily leads.
Dahe Daily produces 80 pages in four volumes every day, printed entirely in colour in quarto format. Of those pages, 64 make up the nationwide version and 16 pages form the special edition for the provincial capital, Zhengzhou. The national version is based on the Central Plains and faces the whole country: it pays attention to major social, economic, livelihood, political, military, cultural, life and sports news at home and abroad, in its own description promoting national justice and criticising current shortcomings. The Zhengzhou City Edition focuses on the provincial capital, reporting the news and everyday matters around its people, tracking fashion and hot topics, attending to people's livelihoods and advocating consumption. From March 2007 the capital edition began to cover the Kaifeng market as well, serving readers in both Zhengzhou and the neighbouring former capital and further expanding the paper's influence across the metropolitan heart of Henan.
The paper's circulation growth is the central fact of its history. Its daily circulation was 600,000 copies in 2003, ranking 16th in China and 99th in the world in the world top-100 daily circulation table published that year. By 2006 its daily circulation had reached one million copies across China, of which 400,000 copies were distributed daily in Zhengzhou alone. As the number-one brand in the Central Plains newspaper market, it has been selected five times as one of the Top 100 World Daily Publishers; a 2010 world top-100 ranking placed it 64th. In Zhengzhou, the often-quoted measure of its penetration was one copy of Dahe Daily for every six people in the city, described as the highest coverage density among comparable newspapers in Henan Province, at a cover price of 5 jiao per copy in the period described. Its comprehensive competitiveness has been ranked fourth in China's newspaper industry. These rankings made Dahe Daily the standard example of how a provincial metropolitan paper, launched by a Party group in the 1990s, could reach world-scale circulation within a decade.
Behind the circulation figures stood a large physical operation. Reference accounts describe distribution through more than 300 distribution sites and a delivery team of over 6,000 delivery staff, covering the whole of Henan Province and cities in other provinces, and put the paper's total readership claim at 130 million. As a crucial advertising channel, Dahe Daily was reported to bring in 430 million yuan in annual advertising revenue. Its publishers described it as the prime print medium through which enterprises — including foreign enterprises — presented their corporate image and expanded in the Henan market. The combination of a million-copy circulation, saturation coverage of the provincial capital and a province-wide delivery network made the paper, for advertisers, effectively the mass medium of the Central Plains during the peak years of Chinese print.
Dahe Daily developed a family of sub-publications around its main title. Dahe Wealth (also rendered Dahe Fortune) is a financial weekly created by Dahe Daily, described as a Sunday newspaper released on Thursday, which focuses on financial dynamics, examines economic trends, reviews successful and unsuccessful cases of enterprises, pays attention to the entrepreneurial community and demonstrates entrepreneurial spirit. Dahe Digest, issued on Thursdays, is a collection of news, fiction, current affairs and humour selected from other newspapers and magazines. Dahe Health focuses on people's health care and current medical affairs, with sections including medical information, health in life and healthy diet, and published every Tuesday. Together the sub-presses show the paper extending its metropolitan formula — livelihood, money, health and leisure reading — into the weekly and specialist formats that Chinese metropolitan dailies used to deepen reader loyalty and advertising inventory.
Dahe Daily's editorial promise distinguishes it from its Party-paper parent. As a comprehensive newspaper reflecting daily city life, it set out to concern itself with people's livelihood, promote fashion, get close to life and serve the public. Its national edition's self-description — paying close attention to major events in society, economy, politics, military affairs, culture and sports, promoting justice and criticising global and current affairs — sits alongside the capital edition's focus on the trivial and the practical: the news around ordinary people. Reference descriptions call it the favourite local urban newspaper among the people of Henan, and its brand position as the first brand of the Central Plains newspaper market rests on that combination of scale and closeness. In a province of Zhengzhou's size and growth — a national central city, the core of the Central Plains city cluster and a transport hub linking east and west — a paper organised around livelihood and city service had an enormous natural audience.
Dahe Daily's print brand extends online through www.dahebao.cn and through the group's Dahe.cn platform, which describes itself as the first brand of local news website in Henan and publishes an English-language edition carrying Henan news to international readers. By the early 2020s the paper — referred to in Chinese coverage as Dahe News — had built a substantial social-media operation: its Douyin account, the Yu Video Douyin account and its official Weibo together were reported to have exceeded 10 million followers, with nearly one million followers on its WeChat public account. In October 2021 it launched a live-streaming e-commerce brand, “Dahe Selection,” at the Henan (Zhengzhou) International Modern Agricultural Expo, positioning the venture as “authoritative media plus Henan culture plus characteristic agricultural products” and using live broadcasts to endorse Henan farm products; earlier public-welfare live broadcasts in 2020 and 2021 had drawn millions of views and helped Henan enterprises resume work and production after disruption. Media observers quoted in coverage of the launch described the move as evidence of the transformation of a traditional newspaper into a platform integrating content, audience and commerce.
Dahe Daily is one of the clearest success stories of China's metropolitan newspaper era. Founded by a provincial Party group on 1 August 1995, renamed on 1 October 1997, past 600,000 daily copies by 2003 and one million by 2006, selected five times among the world's top 100 daily publishers and ranked fourth in comprehensive competitiveness among Chinese newspapers, it demonstrated how completely an urban daily could dominate a provincial market of Henan's scale. Its 80-page daily package, its Zhengzhou and national editions, its Dahe Wealth, Digest and Health sub-publications, its 300-plus distribution sites and its later reinvention across Dahe.cn, social video and live e-commerce together trace the full arc of Chinese print media from the 1990s boom into the platform age — while remaining, throughout, the best-known newspaper brand of the Central Plains.
