About Danzhou News Net

Danzhou News Net

Danzhou News Net is the official online news portal serving Danzhou, a prefecture-level city in northwestern Hainan, China's island province. Published in Chinese, it carries local government, economy, society, livelihood and culture news for the Danzhou area, and it is the city's dedicated local news website, produced by Danzhou's converged media centre, the merged municipal newspaper and broadcasting group. It is distinct from the print Danzhou Daily newspaper, whose reporting it carries alongside online-first local coverage and local government service information. Danzhou is Hainan's largest city by land area, centred on the town of Nada and on the Yangpu Economic Development Zone, the deep-water port and bonded industrial area through which most of the island's imported cargo passes. It is also an ancient place — the site of Hainan's first administrative unit, and of the academy where the exiled Song-dynasty writer Su Dongpo taught. A portal for Danzhou reports on free-trade port policy and ancient salt fields, refineries and poetry, in the same news day.

The portal and its place in Danzhou media

Danzhou News Net is Danzhou's web-native local news service. Its recorded remit covers government, economy, society, livelihood and culture news across the whole prefecture, published on a rolling basis as municipal announcements, port and project updates and community stories appear. Its position is distinct from that of the Danzhou Daily: the newspaper is the city's print title, while the News Net is the online portal through which readers follow the prefecture continuously, including the local government service information residents need for daily life. The portal is produced by the city's converged media centre, the merged municipal newspaper and broadcasting group, reflecting the nationwide restructuring that combined municipal print, radio and television newsrooms into single converged operations. Local news websites of this type operate under Cyberspace Administration of China internet news information service licensing, the national system governing which organisations may gather and publish news online.

A prefecture with no districts

Danzhou has an administrative shape unlike any other prefecture-level city in China: it has no county-level divisions at all. The city government directly administers its towns — 17 towns, together with state-run farms and the Yangpu Economic Development Zone. Danzhou covers about 3,394 square kilometres in the northwest of Hainan, the island's largest city by land area, with a population of 954,259 recorded in the 2020 census. Its administrative seat and urban centre is Nada Town, a settlement more than 400 years old that has been the seat of Danzhou, formerly Dan County, since 1958, with a town population of about 220,000 recorded in 2010 — the third largest urban centre on Hainan after Haikou and Sanya. Danzhou was a county-level city from 1993 and was upgraded to a prefecture-level city in February 2015, the fourth in Hainan after Haikou, Sanya and Sansha. For the portal, that structure means its reporting runs directly from city hall to town level, with no county layer in between.

Yangpu: Hainan's import gateway

The second urban centre of Danzhou, and its economic engine, is Yangpu, on the Yangpu Peninsula on the northwestern coast, about 140 kilometres west of Haikou. The Yangpu Economic Development Zone was officially established by the State Council in March 1992, covering about 31 square kilometres in its original zone, and it was the first development zone approved for lease to foreign investors by the Chinese government. The zone contains the Port of Yangpu, an oil refinery, a petroleum commercial reserve base and a power station, and it is Hainan's largest economic zone. Accounts of the zone record that Yangpu handles more than seven-tenths of the island's imported cargo. Port, refinery and bonded-industry news is therefore not specialised trade coverage for the portal — it is the prefecture's main economy story, and with Hainan's development as a free trade port, Yangpu's customs and shipping policies are followed by readers across the island and beyond.

Dan'er, Su Dongpo and the ancient salt field

Danzhou's past reaches back to the beginning of administration on Hainan. The Han dynasty established the Dan'er commandery here in 110 BC, the first administrative unit on the island. The city's best-known historical resident was an exile: the Song-dynasty writer and official Su Shi, known as Su Dongpo, was banished to Danzhou in the eleventh century and taught there; the Dongpo Academy in Zhonghe Town preserves that memory and anchors the city's cultural identity. On the coast, the Yangpu Ancient Salt Field preserves a landscape of stone salt pans worked by traditional solar methods. For the portal, this inheritance supplies a culture brief very different from the port's: academies, salt pans, Danzhou's own dialect and folk traditions, including its noted tradition of sung verse and調聲 folk songs, are covered alongside free-trade policy — the old Danzhou and the new one in a single record.

Nada and the towns of the interior

Away from Yangpu, Danzhou is a farming and small-town prefecture centred on Nada. The seat town, formed more than 400 years ago from the merger of the villages of Nanian and Datong, serves a hinterland of towns such as Baimajing on the coast, Zhonghe, Paipu and Xinzhou, growing rice, tropical crops and rubber across the volcanic soils of northwestern Hainan. The portal's livelihood coverage — the practical news of prices, weather, schools, clinics and town services — is where most of these residents meet it most often. Infrastructure is a standing story: the round-the-island expressway and the high-speed railway circling Hainan connect the prefecture's edges, while Nada itself, set inland from its nearest stations, has long awaited closer rail access, and a Danzhou airport has been under construction to serve the area. Each transport project is reported as it changes the daily geography of the prefecture.

An island economy in transition

Danzhou is described in provincial accounts as Hainan's largest city by land area and its second economy, accounting for about one-ninth of the island's population, one-sixth of its coastline and one-tenth of its land, and it has been designated to become the central city of western Hainan. Its development model joins port and industry to city building: Yangpu's refinery, reserves and container port at one end, Nada's urban growth at the other, and farming towns between. For the portal, economy coverage moves along that whole chain — free-trade port policy and port throughput, industrial projects in the zone, urban construction in Nada, and harvests and rural incomes in the towns. Few prefecture portals cover a nationally significant bonded port and a Song-dynasty academy within the same jurisdiction; Danzhou News Net does so as a matter of routine.

Coast, climate and island livelihoods

Geography sets much of the portal's society agenda. Danzhou's long coastline supports fishing towns and the salt field as well as the Yangpu port, and Hainan's tropical climate brings a typhoon season that makes weather warnings, flood preparation and post-storm recovery recurring public-service reporting. Inland, the Nandu River system drains the prefecture, and water, reservoirs and irrigation matter to its farmers. The prefecture's people speak Danzhou dialect alongside other local speech such as Junhua and Hakka in some communities, giving its culture pages a linguistic variety unusual in a single prefecture. Environment coverage follows the coast and the rivers together, since both the port economy and the farming economy depend on them.

Government and public-service information

Alongside news, Danzhou News Net carries local government service information: the notices, policy explanations and practical guidance through which residents deal with the municipal state. That function is central to portals of this type in China, and it has a particular shape in Danzhou, where city government administers towns directly, with no district or county layer — the announcements the portal carries reach from the prefecture straight to its 17 towns, farms and the Yangpu zone. The same site that reports a port milestone or a Dongpo Academy event also publishes the notices residents must act on, binding an island prefecture of port workers, farmers and townspeople into one readership.

Licensing and the converged-media system

Danzhou News Net operates inside the regulatory and organisational framework that governs Chinese local media. Internet news information services are licensed by the Cyberspace Administration of China, and the portal's production by the city's converged media centre reflects the national restructuring in which municipal newspaper and broadcasting groups were merged so that print reporting, broadcast material and online publishing are planned and produced together. Within that system, the Danzhou Daily remains the print newspaper of record, while the News Net publishes continuously, carries the newspaper's reporting, and adds rolling local coverage and service information that a printed daily cannot provide. Its recorded identity — the city's dedicated local news website — is exactly that division of labour.

Why Danzhou News Net matters

For readers inside the prefecture, Danzhou News Net is the municipal chronicle: the place where government, economy, society, livelihood and culture news for Nada, Yangpu and the towns appears as a single continuous record. For readers outside it — across Hainan and among those following the island's free trade port — it is the working source on the prefecture that handles most of Hainan's imports, preserves the memory of Su Dongpo's exile, and governs a tenth of the island with no districts at all. Port and poetry, in one local record: that combination defines Danzhou News Net and its audience.
