About DD Girnar

Overview

DD Girnar is the Gujarati-language television channel of Doordarshan, India's public service broadcaster, owned and operated by Prasar Bharati. Broadcast from studios at Doordarshan Kendra in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, it is the state's dedicated public television service, carrying news, cultural programmes, serials, educational content and entertainment in Gujarati. The channel began 24-hour transmission on 1 October 1993 and was relaunched under the DD Girnar name in 2003; it was formerly known as DD-10 Gujarati and as Doordarshan Kendra Ahmedabad. It transmits in 1080i high-definition format, and its official web presence is through doordarshan.gov.in, the portal of the Doordarshan network.

The channel's name comes from the Girnar hills of Junagadh, one of Gujarat's most storied landscapes, and its slogans — "Aapni Sanskruti Aapni Odhakh" (Our Culture, Our Identity) and "Sanskruti Aapdi" — signal its mandate as a custodian of Gujarati language and culture. As a public broadcaster, its remit extends beyond ratings to include educational programming, agricultural extension, health information and the promotion of regional art forms.

Doordarshan and Prasar Bharati

DD Girnar is part of the Doordarshan network, the television arm of Prasar Bharati, India's public broadcasting corporation established under the Prasar Bharati Act. Doordarshan began television broadcasting in India in 1959 and grew into one of the world's largest terrestrial television networks, with a mandate to inform, educate and entertain. Its regional language channels — including DD Girnar for Gujarati — form the backbone of its service to India's linguistic diversity, each operating from a Doordarshan Kendra in the state capital or a major city.

As a Prasar Bharati channel, DD Girnar is funded by the Government of India and carries the obligations of public service broadcasting: news bulletins, programmes of national importance, educational and developmental content, and coverage of government schemes and initiatives, alongside entertainment that reflects the culture of Gujarat.

Origins: The SITE Project and Doordarshan Kendra Ahmedabad

Television came to Gujarat through one of the most ambitious experiments in the history of broadcasting. Doordarshan Kendra, Ahmedabad was set up on 15 March 1976 as part of the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) — a joint project of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Government of India that used an American satellite to beam educational television programmes to villages across six Indian states. The 1 KW transmitter for the Ahmedabad centre was based at PIJ in Kheda district, the studio functioned from the ISRO premises in Ahmedabad, and the administrative office was located in the Polytechnic compound in Ahmedabad.

SITE ran from August 1975 to July 1976 and is remembered as a landmark in development communication, demonstrating that satellite television could deliver education, agricultural information and health messaging directly to rural audiences. The Ahmedabad Kendra was one of the lasting institutional legacies of the experiment, giving Gujarat a permanent television production base that would grow into the DD Girnar operation.

Growth of the Kendra: 1983–1992

In the years after SITE, the Ahmedabad centre expanded steadily. A plot of land was identified in the city and a low-power transmitter was set up at Thaltej Tekra in Ahmedabad on 19 November 1983, extending terrestrial television coverage in the region. The Kendra's own studio was commissioned on 2 October 1987, giving Gujarat a full-fledged television production facility, and regional-language uplinking began on 30 December 1992 — the technical step that allowed Gujarati programmes to be beamed by satellite rather than relying solely on terrestrial transmitters.

These milestones track the broader growth of Doordarshan in the 1980s and early 1990s: the expansion of the terrestrial network after the 1982 Asian Games, the commissioning of regional studios, and the move toward satellite distribution through the Regional Language Satellite Service. The DD Metro channel was set up on 1 May 1994 as part of the same wave of expansion.

24-Hour Transmission and the DD Girnar Identity

DD Girnar began its 24-hour transmission on 1 October 1993 as part of Doordarshan's Regional Language Satellite Channels initiative, which gave each major linguistic region a round-the-clock satellite service. For a decade it operated under names including Doordarshan Kendra Ahmedabad and DD-10 Gujarati before being relaunched as DD Girnar in 2003, with the new name and the "Aapni Sanskruti Aapni Odhakh" slogan marking a fresh identity for the channel.

The renaming was part of a wider Doordarshan effort in the early 2000s to give its regional channels distinct brand identities rather than treating them as numbered relays of the national service. DD Girnar's identity since then has been built around Gujarati cultural pride — its programming, presentation and promos emphasise the language, literature, music, dance and festivals of Gujarat.

Programming

DD Girnar's schedule blends entertainment, culture, education and information. Its current programming includes the cookery show Rasoi ni Rangat, the serial Ek Dal na Pankhi (in re-runs), the magazine and feature programmes One Minute and Gram Jagat (a rural-affairs programme), the film-music show Filmi Sargam, and the entertainment programmes Kaka ni Kamal, Kuvara Corporation and Gammat Gulal. The mix reflects the classic Doordarshan regional formula: serials and light entertainment to hold audiences, film-based music for popular appeal, and rural and developmental programming to serve the public-service mandate.

Beyond entertainment, the channel carries Gujarati news bulletins, current-affairs discussions, agricultural programmes for farmers, health and education shows, and coverage of state and national events of importance. During elections, festivals and major public occasions, the channel provides live and special coverage from across Gujarat.

News and Public Service Role

As Gujarat's public broadcaster, DD Girnar carries a responsibility that commercial channels do not: to provide reliable news and information to all sections of the population, including in areas and among audiences that private broadcasters find commercially unattractive. Its news bulletins in Gujarati cover state, national and international developments, and its developmental programming addresses agriculture, rural development, health, education and government welfare schemes.

The channel's terrestrial and satellite reach has historically made it the default television service in parts of rural Gujarat, and its educational and extension programming — from farm advisories to classroom content — continues the development-communication mission that began with the SITE experiment in the 1970s.

Availability and Technical Details

DD Girnar is available across India on direct-to-home and cable platforms. It is carried on DD Free Dish, Doordarshan's free direct-to-home service, and on private DTH platforms including Airtel Digital TV, where it appears on channel 589. The channel transmits in 1080i high-definition format. Its terrestrial transmitters historically carried a split schedule — satellite programming for part of the day and terrestrial-specific content for the rest — though satellite and DTH distribution now dominate viewing.

The channel's satellite distribution gives it reach not only across Gujarat but among Gujarati-speaking viewers throughout India and in the diaspora, for whom DD Girnar is a link to the language and culture of the home state.

Online Presence

DD Girnar's official web presence is through doordarshan.gov.in, the central portal of the Doordarshan network, which carries programme schedules, channel information and live-streaming links for the network's services. Doordarshan's channels are also available through the Prasar Bharati digital platforms, extending the reach of DD Girnar's programming to online and mobile viewers.
