About Der Nervenarzt

Der Nervenarzt

Der Nervenarzt is the German specialist journal for neurology and psychiatry: the medizinische Fachzeitschrift for Psychiatrie, Psychotherapie, Psychosomatik and Nervenheilkunde — appearing in seven issues a year from the Springer Medizin Verlag in Berlin — and the organ of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie, Psychosomatik und Nervenheilkunde (DGPPN), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Neurologie (DGN) and the Deutsche Schlaganfall-Gesellschaft (DSG). Founded in 1928 (resumed in January 1947 after the war interruption), the journal is an internationally respected publication organ with peer review, an article archive since 1996, and the CME-certified continuing education that lets readers earn continuing-education points online. Its formula — the comprehensive Themenschwerpunkt with coordinated contributions as each issue's core — makes it the working journal of Germany's neurologists and psychiatrists.

Overview

Der Nervenarzt is the clinical-scientific journal of the nerve specialties. The format: seven issues a year (monthly until 2024), each built around a comprehensive theme focus (Themenschwerpunkt) with coordinated contributions as the Kernstück — the core piece. The freely submitted Originalien (original articles) enable the presentation of important clinical studies and serve the scientific exchange. The "CME Zertifizierte Fortbildung" section offers secured results of scientific research and makes medical experience usable for daily practice: after reading, the reader can test the acquired knowledge and earn CME points online — oriented to the specialty's continuing-education regulations.

The readership — the niedergelassene und in der Klinik tätige Ärzte für Neurologie, Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie — the resident and clinic doctors of the nerve specialties. The journal prepares the basic findings and current information of the fields competently and practice-oriented; beyond that, the neurological part discusses questions from subfields such as neuropathology, neuroradiology, neurosurgery and neuropediatrics. The contributions pass a peer-review process; the Impact Factor is 0.9 (2023, ISI Web of Knowledge).

The journal's institutional weight — the organ of the DGPPN, the DGN, the DSG and the Gesellschaft Österreichischer Nervenärzte und Psychiater — makes it the official medium of the German-speaking nerve specialties: the societies' journal. The ISSNs are 0028-2804 (print) and 1433-0407 (online); the CODEN is NERVA; the SpringerLink journal is link.springer.com/journal/115.

History

The 1928 founding — the Weimar-era monthly — deserves its telling. Volume 1 appeared in 1928 with the subtitle "Monatsschrift für alle Gebiete nervenärztlicher Forschung und Praxis": the monthly for all areas of neurological research and practice — the Weimar Republic's nerve specialties getting their journal. The volumes 1 (1928) through 17 (1944, last July/September) trace the journal through the Weimar years, the Nazi seizure of power and the war: the German neurology and psychiatry publishing through the catastrophe. The January 1947 resumption — volume 18 — restarted the record in the destroyed country's scientific reconstruction: the Springer journal as the continuity. The founding's function — the 1928's — established the program: the research and the practice, the monthly rhythm, the society ties — the journal that would become the organ of the DGPPN, the DGN and the DSG.

The publisher history: Berlin/Heidelberg/New York: Springer — then Berlin: Springer Medizin Verlag GmbH — the Springer medical publishing house. The organ functions accumulated: the DGPPN (earlier: Deutsche Gesellschaft für Psychiatrie und Nervenheilkunde), the DGN and the Austrian society as Mitteilungsblatt, the DSG — the journal as the societies' official medium. The supplements — the "Beilage für Nervenärzte," the congress abstracts (DGN congress, DGPPN abstract collections), since 2015 "Pharmawissen aktuell" — extended the brand.

The NS-reckoning special issues — the historical confrontation — deserve their telling. In recent years three Sonderhefte of Der Nervenarzt published a thorough scientific treatment (gründliche wissenschaftliche Bearbeitung) of the NS-Belastung — the Nazi-era burden — of German neurology: the journal examining its own discipline's history under the Third Reich. The special issues' function — the reckoning's — is the scientific journal as the historical conscience: the specialty confronting the years 1933–1945 in its own organ — the peer-reviewed examination of the burden. The journal's own history — the 1928–1944 volumes, the July/September 1944 last issue, the January 1947 resumption — frames the reckoning: the continuous record examining its discontinuous past. The editors — outstanding and historically significant representatives of both specialties, on the psychiatric side and from neurology — shaped the journal across the decades. The article archive since 1996, the online ISSN 1433-0407, the SpringerLink presence: the digital continuity of the 1928 founding.

Coverage and Content

The editorial program follows the specialties' year. The theme-focus coverage — the Themenschwerpunkt — is each issue's core: the comprehensive, coordinated contributions on one theme — the background knowledge plus the evaluation of scientific results considering practical experience. The original-article coverage — the frei eingereichten Originalien — presents the important clinical studies: the scientific exchange. The CME section — the certified continuing education — deserves its telling. The "CME Zertifizierte Fortbildung" offers secured results of scientific research and makes medical experience usable for daily practice: the reader studies the contributions, tests the acquired knowledge, and earns CME points online — the section oriented to the specialty's Weiterbildungsordnung (continuing-education regulations). The CME's function — the certified's — is the journal as the educator: the neurologist and psychiatrist fulfilling the continuing-education duty through the journal — the reading that counts as training. The peer review — all contributions passing the review process — backs the CME with the scientific standard: the certified education on the reviewed science.

The neurology coverage — the neurologische Teil — discusses the subfields: neuropathology, neuroradiology, neurosurgery, neuropediatrics — plus the stroke medicine (the DSG organ function). The psychiatry coverage — the psychiatrische Seite — addresses psychiatry, psychotherapy and psychosomatics: the DGPPN's fields. The historical coverage — the NS-Belastung special issues — treats the Nazi-era burden of German neurology: the scientific reckoning.

The congress coverage — the DGN congress issues, the DGPPN abstract collections — serves the societies' meetings. The pharma coverage — the "Pharmawissen aktuell" supplement since 2015 — serves the drug knowledge. The formats' mix — the seven issues, the supplements, the CME, the archive — defines Der Nervenarzt: the clinical-scientific journal of the nerve specialties.

Organization and Ownership

Der Nervenarzt is published by the Springer Medizin Verlag GmbH, Berlin (Heidelberg: Springer Medizin) — the Springer Nature medical publishing house. The journal is the organ of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie, Psychosomatik und Nervenheilkunde (DGPPN), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Neurologie (DGN), the Deutsche Schlaganfall-Gesellschaft (DSG) and the Gesellschaft Österreichischer Nervenärzte und Psychiater — the societies' official medium.

The business model follows the medical-press pattern: the subscriptions (seven issues a year), the institutional licenses (the online resource with DFG-funded long-term archiving at the DNB), the CME business, the advertising and the supplements. The peer review, the 0.9 Impact Factor, the GND/VIAF norm data (GND: 7532634-6, VIAF: 198564249) document the journal's scientific standing. Detailed circulation, staffing and revenue figures and the current editor names are not publicly confirmed.

Digital Presence

The journal's digital home is springermedizin.de — the Springer Medizin portal — and link.springer.com/journal/115: the article archive since 1996, the online issues (ISSN 1433-0407), the supplements (partly online-only). The CME section — the certified continuing education with the online knowledge test and CME points — is the digital education product.

The digital strategy follows the scientific-publisher logic: the print journal for the seven-issue deep read — the theme focuses, the original articles — the platform for the archive and the CME — the 1996–present full text, the online points. As the neurology-psychiatry journal — the Springer Medizin-published Fachzeitschrift (the 1928 founding, the 1947 resumption, the DGPPN/DGN/DSG organ function) — Der Nervenarzt remains the specialties' paper: the internationally respected publication organ for neurology, psychiatry and psychotherapy, seven times a year in print and at springermedizin.de.
