About DerWesten

DerWesten

DerWesten is a German-language digital news portal based in Essen, operated by Funke Digital GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Funke Mediengruppe. Online since 29 October 2007, it has evolved from an umbrella portal for the group's North Rhine-Westphalian daily newspapers into a boulevard-style news brand aimed at a young, mobile-first audience. Its editorial focuses are regional news from NRW, entertainment and celebrity stories, sports coverage and service journalism, complemented by political reporting. The portal forms an editorial community with Funke's other digital news brands, Berlin live, Moin.de, News38.de and Thüringen24, and its tabloid tone and headline style have made it one of the most-discussed regional portals in Germany.

Overview

DerWesten addresses the news appetite of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous state, with an emphasis on the Ruhr region. From its newsroom in Essen, in the heart of the Ruhr, the portal covers the issues that move the "Revier": local politics, the structural transformation of the former coal and steel region, major employers, transport, and the everyday life of the region's cities from Dortmund and Essen to Duisburg and Bochum. This regional core is wrapped in a boulevard package: entertainment news, celebrity stories, TV highlights and sports, above all football with Borussia Dortmund and FC Schalke 04, plus Formula 1.

The portal's style is deliberately tabloid. Short articles, emotional headlines optimized for clicks and social sharing, and a focus on topics with broad appeal define the product, which targets younger readers who consume news primarily on their smartphones. The website has frequently been criticized for sensationalist and misleading headlines, a criticism the portal shares with much of the boulevard segment. A weekly newsletter, the "Royals Report" on the British royal family, illustrates the brand's embrace of entertainment journalism alongside its regional news mission.

As part of Funke Digital, DerWesten benefits from the infrastructure of one of Germany's largest media groups. Since January 2024 the music portal schlager.de has also belonged to Funke Digital and cooperates in part with DerWesten, further strengthening the entertainment pillar.

History

DerWesten.de was launched on 29 October 2007 by the then WAZ media group as the joint online portal of its North Rhine-Westphalian daily newspapers: the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ), Westfälische Rundschau (WR), Neue Ruhr/Neue Rhein Zeitung (NRZ), Westfalenpost (WP) and Iserlohner Kreisanzeiger (IKZ). The new portal was conceived with innovative features for its time, including audiovisual content, map-based overviews and active reader participation in the spirit of "Web 2.0", and the group struck a cooperation with Westdeutscher Rundfunk, the first deal of its kind between a private publisher and the public broadcaster, to take over content from the WDR media library. The portal grew quickly, passing 11.2 million visits in January 2012 after a relaunch.

In 2012 the group abandoned the umbrella-brand concept and restored the independent online presences of the newspaper brands, while DerWesten.de was repositioned as an entertainment offering for a young target group. Under the Funke Mediengruppe, which emerged from the WAZ group in 2012/2013, the portal developed into the boulevard-style NRW news brand it is today, operated by Funke Digital GmbH with its legal seat in Berlin and its newsroom in Essen.

The portal's editorial leadership includes Bettina Steinke as editor. In its current form, DerWesten works in an editorial community with Funke's other regional digital portals, sharing resources and content strategies across Berlin, Hamburg, Lower Saxony and Thuringia. The integration of schlager.de in 2024 added a music-entertainment dimension to the portfolio.

Coverage and Content

Regional news from North Rhine-Westphalia is the portal's foundation. The Essen newsroom reports on state politics in Düsseldorf, municipal affairs across the Ruhr cities and beyond, the region's economy, transport and infrastructure, and police and court news. The structural change of the Ruhr region, from coal and steel to services, logistics, technology and culture, provides a continuous thread of business and society reporting.

Entertainment is the second pillar. Celebrity news, TV highlights, cultural events and human-interest stories are produced in the boulevard style that defines the brand, with the weekly "Royals Report" newsletter serving the large audience for British royal coverage. Sports reporting focuses on Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04, the region's football giants, alongside Formula 1 and other widely followed sports.

Service journalism rounds out the offering. A dedicated consumer desk covers everyday topics such as banking changes, strikes, travel tips, energy costs and household advice, while political reporting keeps readers informed about developments in Düsseldorf and Berlin that affect the region. The mix is designed for high-frequency mobile use: short, emotionally headlined articles that invite clicks and shares.

The portal's headline style has made it a case study in the German debate about tabloid journalism online. Critics argue that sensationalist and sometimes misleading headlines erode trust, while defenders point to the competitive reality of the attention economy, in which regional portals compete with national boulevard brands and social media for every click. DerWesten's success in building a large digital audience suggests the formula works commercially, even as the journalistic debate about its costs continues.

Organization and Ownership

DerWesten is operated by Funke Digital GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Funke Mediengruppe headquartered in Essen. Funke is one of Germany's largest regional media groups, publishing daily newspapers in Berlin, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Thuringia, including the Berliner Morgenpost, Hamburger Abendblatt and Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, alongside national magazine brands. The group's digital division, Funke Digital, encompasses the regional news portals, the weather portal wetter.com, job portals and topic portals.

The portal's editor is Bettina Steinke. Within Funke Digital, DerWesten forms an editorial community with Berlin live, Moin.de, News38.de and Thüringen24, cooperating on content and strategy, with schlager.de as a further partner since 2024.

The newsroom's Essen location is itself a statement of identity. Jakob-Funke-Platz, named after the group's founder, sits in the city that has been the Funke group's home since its origins as the WAZ media group, and the portal's journalism is steeped in the Ruhr region's self-understanding: direct, unpretentious and loyal to the "Revier". This regional rootedness distinguishes DerWesten from placeless national boulevard portals, anchoring even its celebrity and service content in a newsroom that lives where its core readers live. The newsroom is based in Essen at the Funke group's address on Jakob-Funke-Platz, in the heart of the Ruhr region the portal serves.

Digital Presence

The website derwesten.de is the portal's sole publishing platform, built for mobile-first, high-frequency news consumption with continuously updated articles across regional news, entertainment, sports, service and politics. There is no print edition; the brand exists entirely in the digital space.

Social media distribution is central to the boulevard model, with the portal maintaining pages on the major platforms where its emotionally headlined stories are shared widely, driving traffic back to the site. The weekly "Royals Report" newsletter serves the entertainment audience directly by email. Search engine optimization ensures visibility for NRW news queries and service topics. The combination of website, social channels and newsletters makes DerWesten one of the most visible digital news brands in North Rhine-Westphalia, embodying the tabloid-style regional portal model that Funke has rolled out across its digital portfolio.

The editorial community with Berlin live, Moin.de, News38.de and Thüringen24 allows the portals to share content strategies, technology and selected stories while maintaining distinct regional identities. A service article on energy costs or a celebrity story can travel across the network, while the NRW news core remains Essen's responsibility. This network model gives each portal the reach advantages of a national player while keeping the regional focus that defines its brand.
