About Die Gynäkologie

Die Gynäkologie

Die Gynäkologie is a monthly German-language specialist journal for gynaecology and obstetrics, published by Springer Medizin in Berlin as part of Springer Nature. Until June 2022 it appeared under the title Der Gynäkologe, which it had carried since its founding in 1968, before being renamed as part of a broad gender-inclusivity initiative by the publisher that replaced titles based on male professional designations with titles based on medical disciplines. The journal publishes peer-reviewed, practice-oriented review articles on gynaecology, endocrinology, reproductive medicine, and obstetrics, and it serves as the official continuing-education organ of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Gynäkologie und Geburtshilfe (DGGG). With volume 59 in publication in 2026, it is the long-established continuing-education journal for women's health in the German-speaking world, published by an editorial board in cooperation with the DGGG.

Overview

Die Gynäkologie is a monthly journal that addresses gynaecologists in practice, hospitals, and research, as well as scientists interested in issues of gynaecology and obstetrics. Its content spans all fields of gynaecology and obstetrics, including endocrinology and reproductive medicine, complemented by interdisciplinary topics from oncology, surgery, internal medicine, and legal medicine. The journal offers up-to-date information with a focus on evidence-based diagnostics and therapy, and all of its articles undergo review.

Each month the journal is devoted to a changing lead theme, which is supplemented by fixed rubrics: Bild und Fall (image and case), CME Weiterbildung – Zertifizierte Fortbildung (certified continuing education), Frauengesundheit in der Praxis (women's health in practice), Für Sie gelesen (read for you), Gynäkologie aktuell (gynaecology news), and Medizinrecht (medical law). Individual articles are published online-first, ahead of the later print edition, and the journal's certified CME contributions allow readers to earn continuing-education credits with each issue. The certified CME contributions allow readers to earn continuing-education credits, and the journal's status as the DGGG's official continuing-education organ gives it a central role in the professional development of German gynaecologists.

According to IVW figures from the second quarter of 2022, the sold circulation was 1,378 copies and the distributed circulation 2,935 copies, figures that reflect the journal's tightly defined specialist audience of gynaecologists in practice, hospitals, and research. The journal's print ISSN is 2731-7102 and its online ISSN is 2731-7110, with the CODEN GYNKA. The bibliographic coverage runs from volume 30 in 1997 through volume 59 in 2026.

History

The journal was founded in 1968 as Der Gynäkologe and has been published by the Springer publishing house ever since. The founding year placed it in an era of expansion for German medical publishing, when the growing specialization of medicine created demand for dedicated continuing-education journals in each specialty. For more than five decades it has served as the continuing-education journal for gynaecology and obstetrics in the German-speaking world, accompanying the specialty through the rise of reproductive medicine, prenatal diagnostics, gynaecological oncology, and minimally invasive surgery.

In April 2022, Springer Medizin announced the renaming of the journal to Die Gynäkologie, effective with the June 2022 issue. The change was part of the publisher's sweeping equality initiative, in which titles based on male professional designations were replaced with titles based on the medical disciplines themselves, following the concept of "Der Facharzt" becoming "Die Fachdisziplin". Der Gynäkologe became Die Gynäkologie in the same wave that turned Der Anaesthesist into Die Anaesthesiologie, Der Chirurg into Die Chirurgie, Der Internist into Die Innere Medizin, Der Hautarzt into Die Dermatologie, Der Onkologe into Die Onkologie, and Der Diabetologe into Die Diabetologie. The renaming preserved the journal's continuity, with volume numbering continuing seamlessly and the earlier title's ISSN lineage carried forward.

The journal is one of several publication organs of the DGGG. Alongside it, the society's official publication organ is the FRAUENARZT, published by Publimed Medizin und Medien in Munich; the scientific organ is Geburtshilfe und Frauenheilkunde, published by the Thieme Verlag in Stuttgart and shared with the Austrian society; and the Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics, published by Springer, has served as a scientific organ since the society's founding. The Zentralblatt für Gynäkologie, founded in 1877 as the Centralblatt für Gynäkologie, was at times the official organ of the East German gynaecology society until 1990 and was merged with Geburtshilfe und Frauenheilkunde in 2007. Within this landscape, Die Gynäkologie holds the specific role of the society's continuing-education organ, distinguishing it from the scientific journals and the news organs: its mission is the structured professional development of practising gynaecologists rather than the publication of primary research.

Coverage and Content

The journal publishes practice-oriented review articles on gynaecology, endocrinology, reproductive medicine, and obstetrics. The monthly lead theme gives each issue a clear focus, while the fixed rubrics ensure breadth. Bild und Fall presents instructive cases with imaging, the CME rubric offers certified continuing education, Frauengesundheit in der Praxis addresses practical women's health topics, Für Sie gelesen summarizes important publications, Gynäkologie aktuell covers news from the specialty, and Medizinrecht addresses the legal questions that arise in gynaecological practice.

The content bandwidth is deliberately interdisciplinary: alongside core gynaecology and obstetrics, the journal covers topics from oncology, surgery, internal medicine, and legal medicine that are relevant to gynaecologists. This reflects the reality of gynaecological practice, where a single consultation can touch on oncological screening, endocrinological questions, and legal documentation requirements. Comprehensive reviews on each issue's lead topic provide evidence-based information on diagnostics and therapy, and the CME review articles present verified results of scientific research and their integration into daily practice. The online-first publication model means that individual articles reach readers before the print edition, keeping the journal timely in a specialty where guidelines and therapeutic standards evolve continuously.

Organization and Ownership

Die Gynäkologie is published by Springer Medizin Verlag, the medical publishing division of Springer Nature, headquartered in Berlin. The journal is published by an editorial board in cooperation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Gynäkologie und Geburtshilfe, and it serves as the society's official continuing-education organ. The editorial board includes Klaus Diedrich, Günter Emons, Klaus Friese, Wolfgang Janni, Walter Jonat, Marion Kiechle, Rolf Kreienberg, Nicolai Maass, Olaf Ortmann, Thomas Strowitzki, and Klaus Vetter.

All articles in the journal are reviewed, underpinning its status as a peer-reviewed continuing-education journal. The journal is indexed with its own DOI prefix, and its articles are citable through the standard scholarly identifiers. Subscription and customer service are handled through the publisher's service centre, which manages subscriptions, address changes, and website access for readers.

Digital Presence

Die Gynäkologie is fully integrated into Springer Medizin's digital ecosystem. The journal's page on the publisher's website presents its aims and scope in German and English, the current and recent issues, and the metadata for each volume, with coverage from volume 30 in 1997 through volume 59 in 2026. Individual articles are published online-first on the Springer Nature Link platform, ahead of the print edition.

The journal's digital identity lives within the Springer Medizin and Springer Nature Link platforms rather than on a standalone brand site, which is standard for the publisher's specialist journals. Subscription management is handled online and through the customer service centre, and the platform invites reader feedback directly to the editorial office. Whether the journal maintains dedicated social media channels is not publicly confirmed from the sources consulted.
