About Dorstener Zeitung
Dorstener Zeitung
The Dorstener Zeitung is a regional daily newspaper published in Dorsten, in the northern Ruhr region of North Rhine-Westphalia, as a head paper (Kopfblatt) of the Ruhr Nachrichten within the Lensing Media publishing group. It is the daily paper of record for Dorsten and the surrounding communities, covering Dorsten itself as well as Kirchhellen, Schermbeck, Raesfeld, and Haltern am See. The paper is published by the Verlag Lensing-Wolff GmbH & Co. KG, the Dortmund-based publishing company of Lensing Media, one of the largest newspaper companies in North Rhine-Westphalia. It appears in print six days a week and operates a full digital offering under its own brand at dorstenerzeitung.de, with the paid DZ+ content tier, an e-paper, a mobile app, and podcasts. The Dorstener Zeitung joined the Lensing publishing house in 1949, giving it more than seventy-five years of continuous publication within the group.
Overview
The Dorstener Zeitung serves the city of Dorsten and its neighboring communities in the district of Recklinghausen and the adjacent Münsterland fringe. Dorsten, a former Hanseatic town on the Lippe river at the northern edge of the Ruhr, forms the core of the circulation area, with the paper also covering the Dorsten district of Kirchhellen, the municipality of Schermbeck, Raesfeld in the Borken district, and Haltern am See. This is a region shaped by the structural transformation of the Ruhr: former mining communities, commuter towns oriented toward the northern Ruhr cities, and rural municipalities with strong local identities.
As a Kopfblatt of the Ruhr Nachrichten, the Dorstener Zeitung carries the supra-regional pages produced by Lensing Media's central newsroom in Dortmund, combined with a locally reported section devoted to Dorsten and its coverage area. The paper appears Monday through Saturday as a subscription daily, with single-copy sales supplementing the subscriber base. Its readership spans the town's long-established families, commuters, and newer residents, and the paper positions itself as the comprehensive local news source for an area that receives limited attention from the larger regional media based in the southern Ruhr cities.
History
The Dorstener Zeitung's roots reach back to the Dorstener Volkszeitung, the local newspaper that became part of the Lensing publishing house in 1949. The Lensing media house itself was founded in 1870 by the brothers Heinrich and Lambert Lensing, who from 1875 published the Dortmund daily Tremonia in Dortmund. After the Second World War, Lambert Lensing received a publishing license from the British zone administration in 1949, and the Ruhr Nachrichten began as the successor to the Tremonia with an initial circulation of 120,150 copies.
The expansion of the Lensing publishing house into Westphalia had begun in 1919 with the takeover of the Ahauser Kreisblatt, and in 1949 the Dorstener Volkszeitung and the Halterner Zeitung joined the publishing house. From this point the Dorsten paper developed as a local edition within the Lensing group, later taking the name Dorstener Zeitung. The Lensing house grew further in the following decades: since 1976 it has held a 40 percent stake in the Verlag J. Bauer KG in Marl, publisher of the Recklinghäuser Zeitung; in 1986 it took over the Münstersche Zeitung; and in 1989 the Emsdettener Volkszeitung joined the group. The Recklinghäuser Zeitung was taken over completely in 2020.
Leadership of the media house passed through generations of the Lensing family. Florian Lensing-Wolff joined the management in 1957 and led the house for more than four decades until his death in 2011; his son Lambert Lensing-Wolff took over management in 1999, joined by Daniel Süper and Hans-Christian Haarmann. Today the company operates as Lensing Media GmbH, headquartered in Dortmund and led by Lambert Lensing-Wolff, and ranks among the largest newspaper companies in North Rhine-Westphalia. The Dorstener Zeitung has published continuously within this group for more than seven decades.
Coverage and Content
The Dorstener Zeitung's local section covers the full breadth of public life in its circulation area. Dorsten's city council and administration form a central beat: planning and construction decisions, school and social policy, the town budget, and the ongoing structural development of a city managing the legacy of coal mining and the transition to new economic foundations. The paper reports on the neighboring municipalities of Kirchhellen, Schermbeck, Raesfeld, and Haltern am See with the same local depth, covering their councils, mayors, and community affairs.
The local economy receives sustained attention, from the retail and service sectors to the industrial employers of the northern Ruhr and the agricultural businesses of the rural fringe. The paper covers the courts, the police beat, and emergency services, and follows education from primary schools through the Gymnasien and vocational colleges. Club and association life, dense in this region as elsewhere in Westphalia, fills the local pages: sports clubs from village football to regional leagues, volunteer fire brigades, shooting societies, music groups, church parishes, and the calendar of town festivals, marksmen's festivals, and Christmas markets.
The supra-regional pages from the Ruhr Nachrichten central newsroom supply state politics from Düsseldorf, national and international news, business, sports, culture, and opinion. The paper also carries the customary classified and display advertising, family announcements, and death notices of the German regional press. Its marketing, like that of the other Lensing titles and the Hellweger Anzeiger and Recklinghäuser Zeitung, is handled by Mediakombi NRW, the group's dedicated advertising sales organization.
Organization and Ownership
The Dorstener Zeitung is published by the Verlag Lensing-Wolff GmbH & Co. KG, the publishing company of Lensing Media, headquartered in Dortmund. Lensing Media is one of North Rhine-Westphalia's largest newspaper companies, with the Ruhr Nachrichten as its flagship daily and the Kopfblätter Münsterland Zeitung, Dorstener Zeitung, and Halterner Zeitung under its roof, alongside holdings in the Hellweger Anzeiger in the Unna district and the Recklinghäuser Zeitung. The company also operates the local radio station Radio 91.2 in Dortmund, the city magazine Coolibri through its subsidiary Überblick Medien, and offset printing plants in Ahaus, Dortmund, and Münster, as well as advertising papers and trade journals.
The media house is led by Lambert Lensing-Wolff, with Daniel Süper and Hans-Christian Haarmann in management. Editorial production for the Dorstener Zeitung combines the central Ruhr Nachrichten newsroom in Dortmund, which produces the supra-regional pages, with local editors responsible for the Dorsten-area section. No separately published editor-in-chief for the Dorstener Zeitung alone is publicly identified; editorial leadership sits at the group level. The Lensing group maintains a strategic partnership with Borussia Dortmund, with the Ruhr Nachrichten as the club's official media partner.
Digital Presence
The Dorstener Zeitung operates its own digital newsroom at dorstenerzeitung.de, where local reporting from Dorsten, Kirchhellen, Schermbeck, Raesfeld, and Haltern am See appears around the clock. The site offers a free selection of articles alongside the paid DZ+ tier, which unlocks the full digital content of the daily newspaper and the website, including in-depth reporting, photo galleries, videos, and live tickers. Readers can personalize their news feed under "My Topics" and receive push notifications for breaking news.
The paper's mobile app for smartphones and tablets bundles the complete digital offering: the full content of the daily newspaper and website including all DZ+ articles and podcasts, an e-paper with automatic overnight download of each issue, evening and Sunday editions, offline reading, read-aloud functionality, adjustable font sizes, and full-text search across articles and the archive. The app is published by Verlag Lensing-Wolff GmbH & Co. KG and is available free of charge, with existing subscribers able to use it at no additional cost by logging in. Podcasts produced by the newsroom are bundled in the app, and the paper maintains the customary social media channels through which its local stories reach digital audiences.
