E! (UK and Ireland)
E! in the UK and Ireland was a British pay-television entertainment channel operated by E! Entertainment Europe B.V. and owned by NBCUniversal International Networks. It broadcast celebrity news, reality television and entertainment programming drawn from the American E! network, localised for British and Irish audiences. The channel launched in the UK in 2002, began broadcasting a dedicated localised feed in the summer of 2006, and closed on 31 December 2023, when it was withdrawn from Sky and Virgin Media after more than two decades on air.
Origins of the E! Brand
E! Entertainment Television was founded in the United States by Larry Namer and Alan Mruvka. The network launched on 31 July 1987 as Movietime, a cable service that aired movie trailers, entertainment news, awards coverage and interviews — an early example of a national "barker channel" promoting the entertainment industry to viewers. In June 1990, Movietime was renamed E! Entertainment Television to reflect its widening coverage of celebrity culture, film, television, music, Hollywood gossip and fashion. Over the following decades, E! grew into one of America's best-known entertainment brands, famed for shows such as E! News, Live from the Red Carpet and the Kardashians reality franchise.
E! Enters Europe
In 2002, E! launched in Europe, with its headquarters established in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Germany was one of the first countries where the channel broadcast, airing daily. In the autumn of 1999, Zone Vision had already launched an E! service in Poland under licence on the Wizja TV digital platform, with localised content provided by Zone's Studio Company, though that service closed by 2002. The 2002 European launch gave E! a permanent continental foothold, and in the summer of 2006 the channel began localising its feeds for France, Italy and the UK, tailoring scheduling, advertising and presentation to national audiences.
In the UK, E! launched on the Sky platform on 2 December 2002, as reported by Digital Spy at the time. The channel was operated in Britain through E! Entertainment UK Limited, with the European operation run by E! Entertainment Europe B.V.
Ownership: NBCUniversal International Networks
E! in Europe was owned by NBCUniversal International Networks, the international channels division of NBCUniversal. The E! branding itself was licensed for international use. The channel's sister channels in the NBCUniversal international portfolio included the DreamWorks Channel, Syfy and Universal TV. E!'s corporate parentage placed it within one of the world's largest media groups, giving it access to NBCUniversal's deep library of entertainment content alongside the E! America's original programming.
Programming and Format
E! in the UK and Ireland was positioned as a lifestyle and entertainment channel. Its schedule featured entertainment-related programming, reality television and Hollywood gossip and news, much of it drawn from the American E! network. Signature strands included celebrity news coverage in the style of E! News, red-carpet event coverage such as Live from the Red Carpet, and reality series from the E! stable. The UK feed carried E! America's content adapted for the local market, with British scheduling and advertising.
The channel's pitch to viewers and advertisers was straightforward: wall-to-wall celebrity culture, from breaking entertainment news to long-running reality franchises, aimed at a young, entertainment-hungry audience. At its peak, E! reported an international audience reach of some 600 million homes, making it one of the most widely distributed entertainment brands in the world.
High Definition Launch
E! expanded its technical offering over the years. At the end of 2011, the channel launched in high definition in Eastern Europe, followed by an HD launch in the UK and Ireland on 8 October 2012, as reported by Digital Spy. Germany followed with an HD launch on 30 April 2013, and other European countries received HD feeds thereafter. The channel broadcast in 1080i HDTV, downscaled to 16:9 576i for the standard-definition feed.
The Localised Versions of E!
Over its lifetime, E! operated a family of localised European versions of the channel, including feeds for the Balkans, Benelux, Greece and Cyprus, Israel, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Scandinavia, Serbia and Slovenia. Several of these have since closed or been replaced: the Italian feed closed on 31 August 2012, the Russian feed closed on 1 May 2015 during technical problems alongside Universal Channel, the German feed closed on 31 December 2022, the UK and Ireland feed closed on 31 December 2023, the African feed became Bravo (Africa) on 6 October 2025, and the French feed became Bravo (France) on 17 March 2026. The pattern reflects NBCUniversal's gradual withdrawal of the E! brand from European linear television in favour of other channel brands.
Closure in the UK and Ireland
E! in the UK and Ireland closed on 31 December 2023. In the run-up to the closure, the channel's UK-specific presentation had already been scaled back: promos and trailers for E! ceased, and E! America's content such as E! News and Live from the Red Carpet was dropped from the schedule, leaving the channel as a lifestyle outlet running library content. As reported by RXTVinfo in December 2023, the channel left the Sky and Virgin Media platforms at the end of the year, ending its 21-year run in Britain. Viewers were directed to replacement and alternative entertainment programming on the platforms.
The End of an Era for Celebrity TV
The closure of E! in the UK marked the end of an era for dedicated celebrity television on British pay TV. When E! launched in 2002, linear channels were the primary way British viewers accessed American entertainment programming; by 2023, streaming services, social media and YouTube had fragmented the celebrity-news audience, and the economics of a standalone linear entertainment channel had become difficult. NBCUniversal's decision to close the UK feed formed part of a wider strategic retreat from the E! brand in Europe, with the company redeploying its channel portfolio around brands such as Bravo in several territories.
Red-Carpet Coverage and Signature Shows
Among the channel's most recognisable programming were its red-carpet specials. Live from the Red Carpet brought viewers live coverage of major awards ceremonies — the Oscars, the Grammys, the Golden Globes and film premieres — with E!'s presenters interviewing arriving celebrities. E! News, the network's flagship daily entertainment news show, delivered Hollywood headlines, celebrity interviews and fashion coverage. The channel also aired long-running reality franchises from the American E! schedule, which drew loyal audiences in Britain and helped define the reality-television boom of the 2000s and 2010s. Together, these strands gave the UK feed a consistent identity: glamorous, gossipy and unapologetically celebrity-focused, distinguishing it from more general entertainment channels on the Sky and Virgin Media platforms.
Legacy
During its two decades on air, E! in the UK and Ireland brought American celebrity culture to British pay-television audiences on a daily basis, from red-carpet awards coverage to the reality shows that defined 2000s and 2010s pop culture. It served as the British home of the E! brand's biggest franchises and helped establish the template for celebrity-driven entertainment television that later migrated to streaming and social platforms.
