About echo am Wochenende

echo am Wochenende

echo am Wochenende is a free weekly newspaper published in Heilbronn, Baden-Württemberg, by the Delta Medien Service GmbH & Co. KG, a subsidiary of the Stimme Mediengruppe, the publishing group of the Heilbronner Stimme. Distributed free of charge to households in Heilbronn and the surrounding district every Saturday, it is the region's leading advertising paper with editorial content, combining local journalism with advertising, service pages, and event listings. The paper was launched on 20 September 1998 under the name echo as a defensive move against a planned Heilbronn edition of the Freiburg-based free Sunday paper Zeitung am Sonntag, and has appeared in its current Saturday form since the merger of its Wednesday and Sunday editions. Its digital home is the echo24.de portal and the stimme.de platform of the Heilbronner Stimme.

Overview

echo am Wochenende appears once a week, on Saturdays, as a free newspaper distributed to households across the city of Heilbronn and the Heilbronn district. As an advertising paper (Anzeigenblatt), its business model rests on display and classified advertising from regional businesses, while its editorial pages provide local news, reports, interviews, service journalism, and event calendars. The paper reaches readers who do not subscribe to the paid daily Heilbronner Stimme, giving advertisers access to full household coverage in the distribution area.

The paper is published by the Delta Medien Service GmbH & Co. KG, the subsidiary of the Stimme Mediengruppe responsible for the group's advertising papers and the echo24.de portal. The Stimme Mediengruppe, formed as an umbrella brand in 2021, unites seven subsidiary companies with around 480 employees, including 117 editors, and publishes the dailies Heilbronner Stimme, Hohenloher Zeitung, and Kraichgau Stimme, the weekly echo am Wochenende, magazines including HZ extra and the Heilbronner Stadtanzeiger, and portals such as Jobstimme and Immostimme.

The Heilbronn region's media landscape gives echo am Wochenende a distinctive role: alongside the paid daily, the free weekly serves as the weekend reading for broad segments of the population, with a mix of local stories, advertising specials, and leisure content. The paper's distribution covers the city of Heilbronn and the municipalities of the Heilbronn district, from the wine-growing villages along the Neckar to the industrial towns of the Unterland region. For many households, the Saturday echo is the primary printed source of local event information and regional shopping offers, and its full household coverage makes it an essential advertising medium for the region's retailers, car dealers, real estate agents, and service businesses.

History

The echo was born in 1998 out of competitive pressure. The Freiburg-based Zeitung am Sonntag planned to launch a Heilbronn edition of its free Sunday paper in 1998/99, in cooperation with the Heilbronn advertising paper Neckar-Express, which then appeared weekly on Wednesdays. In response, the publisher of the Heilbronner Stimme launched its own advertising paper through its subsidiary Delta Medien Service GmbH & Co. KG: the echo, which appeared from 20 September 1998 on Wednesdays as echo am Mittwoch and on Sundays as echo am Sonntag, distributed free of charge.

The defensive maneuver succeeded: the Heilbronn edition of the Zeitung am Sonntag did appear but was discontinued a few months later, and the rival Neckar-Express itself was discontinued in March 2011. The echo, meanwhile, established itself as a permanent fixture of the region's media landscape.

In October 2015 the Sunday edition was renamed echo am Wochenende and moved to Saturday distribution. The Wednesday edition, echo am Mittwoch, continued until May 2023, when the two editions were merged into a single Saturday paper under the echo am Wochenende title. The paper has thus evolved from a twice-weekly defensive launch into the region's consolidated weekend advertising paper.

The echo's history is intertwined with that of the Heilbronner Stimme, one of southwestern Germany's leading regional dailies. The Stimme's publisher had earlier experimented with local advertising papers: from 1978 to 1986 it launched monthly or weekly Lokalanzeiger titles for individual towns and areas such as Böckingen, Neckarsulm, Bad Friedrichshall, the Zabergäu, and the former districts of Öhringen and Künzelsau. In 1987 the publisher joined with other regional newspaper publishers, the Heilbronn Chamber of Industry and Commerce, and the Heilbronn Chamber of Crafts to launch Radio Regional, Heilbronn's first private radio station, which later became Radio Ton. The echo built on this tradition of publishing innovation, and its survival and growth over more than a quarter-century testify to the enduring economics of the free weekly in the German regional press.

Coverage and Content

echo am Wochenende's editorial content focuses on local news and service journalism for the Heilbronn city and district area. The paper covers town politics, community events, club and association life, local business, and cultural happenings, with reporting geared toward a broad weekend readership. Interviews with local personalities, reports on regional companies, and features on leisure and lifestyle topics form the core of the editorial pages.

Service content is a hallmark of the paper: event calendars, television program listings, advice columns, and special advertising-driven theme pages on topics such as motoring, real estate, home and garden, health, travel, and education. The paper's editorial and advertising content are closely integrated, with special supplements giving regional businesses a platform alongside journalistic features.

The paper's tone is accessible and community-oriented, aimed at readers across all age groups in the distribution area. Unlike the paid daily Heilbronner Stimme, which provides comprehensive political and business coverage, echo am Wochenende concentrates on the local, the practical, and the entertaining: the stories, events, and offers that shape the weekend. Reader participation formats, such as photo competitions, reader surveys, and letters to the editor, strengthen the paper's community ties, and the editorial team works closely with local clubs, schools, and associations to reflect the region's civic life in the paper's pages.

Organization and Ownership

echo am Wochenende is published by the Delta Medien Service GmbH & Co. KG, a subsidiary of the Stimme Mediengruppe, the Heilbronn-based publishing group of the Heilbronner Stimme. The Stimme Mediengruppe unites seven subsidiary companies, including the Stimme Druck printing company, the pVS publishing services company, Druck & Medien Heilbronn, the Regio Zustellservice distribution service, and the TD Designagentur, employing around 480 people, of whom 117 are editors.

The group also holds stakes in other media companies, including the Radio TON broadcasting company, the Staatsanzeiger für Baden-Württemberg, and the Südwestdeutsche Medienholding. The Heilbronner Stimme, the group's flagship daily, is one of Germany's respected regional dailies, honored with major journalism prizes including the Wächterpreis and the Theodor-Wolff-Preis.

Digital Presence

The paper's digital home is echo24.de, the news portal operated by the Delta Medien Service, where the week's stories, event listings, and advertising content appear online. The portal extends the paper's reach beyond the print distribution area and gives advertisers a digital platform alongside the print edition.

The paper is integrated into the stimme.de digital ecosystem of the Heilbronner Stimme, one of the most visited regional news portals in Baden-Württemberg, where the group's local reporting circulates across titles and platforms. The Stimme Mediengruppe's digital products include the meine.stimme community portal, the Jobstimme and Immostimme classified portals, and newsletters that bring selected stories to readers' inboxes. Through these channels, echo am Wochenende's local journalism and advertising content reach readers who encounter the paper primarily on smartphones and computers, complementing the Saturday print distribution to households.
