About EFE

Agencia EFE, known around the world simply as EFE, is Spain's international news agency and the leading news service in the Spanish language. Headquartered in Madrid, it is the world's fourth-largest wire agency and the principal source of agency journalism for the Spanish-speaking world, distributing around three million news items a year in text, photo, video and audio formats. Its journalists report around the clock from more than 180 cities in 120 countries, and its copy serves media across Spain, Latin America and beyond. In India, EFE maintains a New Delhi bureau covering India and South Asia for Spanish-language audiences worldwide. The agency's official website is efe.com.

Overview

EFE operates as a global multimedia news wholesaler, producing journalism in Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic as well as other formats for client media. Simple English Wikipedia's summary of the agency describes its scale: around 3,000 journalists of 60 nationalities working 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from more than 180 cities in 120 countries, supported by four editing desks on three continents — Madrid, Bogotá, Cairo (Arabic) and Rio de Janeiro (Portuguese). It has been called the most important news agency in the Spanish language and, in the words of former Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy, the fourth-largest agency in the world. Its numbers, he noted at the inauguration of the EFE Agency Museum in Madrid in 2016, included operations in almost 200 cities in nearly 120 countries, with 41 offices and 250 international correspondents. The agency defines itself as a journalism company fully dedicated to serving the public interest, pluralism, informative rigour and linguistic diversity.

Founding in Burgos, 1939

EFE was officially founded in the city of Burgos on 3 January 1939. Burgos was then the headquarters of dictator Francisco Franco's wartime government, and the agency's founder was Franco's interior minister, Ramón Serrano Suñer, who asked the journalist Vicente Gallego — the first director of the newspaper Ya — to initiate the project. On 3 January 1939, the Marquis of Torrehoyos, Celedonio de Noriega Ruiz, and the journalist Luis Amato de Ibarrola — both legal representatives of the Fabra agency — declared before a notary that they had agreed to set up a commercial company called Agencia EFE S.A. The Fabra agency contributed its rights and its name, a move that allowed the new agency to be admitted to the Club of Allied Agencies, whose statutes permitted only one agency per country. Technical and human resources from the defunct Faro and Febus agencies were also folded into the new company. Although EFE itself dates to 1939, its roots run much deeper: it inherited the legacy of the Fabra agency, which stretched back to the mid-19th century, and Rajoy noted at the museum opening that the agency had been "recounting history" since almost the time of the writer Mariano José de Larra.

The controversy over the name

The origin of the name EFE has been a subject of controversy. Contrary to popular belief, it is not an acronym. A former president and director of the agency, Luis María Ansón, wrote that the name EFE — the pronunciation of the letter F in Spanish — reflected the participation of the old agencies Fabra, Febus and Faro in the new company. Ramón Serrano Suñer offered a different account in a letter to Antonio Herrero Losada, the director of the rival agency Europa Press: he acknowledged that the agency was named EFE because "F was the initial letter of Falange y de Fe" (Falange and of Faith), the combat newspaper of the Falange, adding that there had been no mention that the letter was also Franco's initial, and that "this would come later." The dispute over the name is part of the agency's contested founding history in the final months of the Spanish Civil War.

Global network and editing desks

EFE's international footprint is built around four regional editing desks: Madrid for Spain and Europe, Bogotá for the Americas, Cairo for Arabic-language output and Rio de Janeiro for Portuguese-language services. This structure lets the agency file in the languages of its principal audiences while maintaining a single 24-hour news cycle. Strategy director Soledad Álvarez has described a worldwide network of journalists of 60 nationalities, with 42 delegations and 50 correspondents and a presence on all five continents. The agency covers all areas of information — politics, economics, culture, science, sport and entertainment — for press, radio, television and internet clients, and its strength in Latin America and the wider Hispanic world has long been its defining commercial asset.

Multimedia and corporate services

Alongside its traditional text wire, EFE produces photo, video, graphics and audio content, marketed through its multimedia services portal and through alliances such as EFE/EPA, the European photo partnership. The agency has invested steadily in digital production and distribution, combining what Rajoy called "consistent quality" with a "commitment to cutting-edge technologies." It also runs EFEcomunica, a communication-services brand aimed at companies and institutions seeking to improve their dissemination and visibility in the media. EFE's news items are distributed far and wide in both Spain and Hispanic America, and its journalists' work is credited daily in newspapers and broadcasts across the Spanish-speaking world.

EFE in India and South Asia

EFE maintains a bureau in New Delhi covering India and South Asia for its Spanish-language services. The bureau is led by an India and South Asia bureau chief — Moncho Torres held the post in early 2023 — and its journalists file text, photo and video coverage of Indian politics, economics, culture and regional affairs, often in collaboration with the EPA photo alliance. EFE's New Delhi-datelined reporting has covered major Indian stories for global audiences, from the European Union's trade negotiations with India to high-level diplomatic visits. On 16 February 2023, EFE News hosted its first direct conversation with Indian media houses and companies in New Delhi, an event organised with the Indo Spanish Chamber of Commerce. The honorary speakers included Sanjay Verma, then Secretary (West) at India's Ministry of External Affairs and a former ambassador of India to Spain, José María Ridao, the ambassador of Spain in India, and EFE president Gabriela Cañas, with Moncho Torres leading a discussion on "evolving strategies and the way forward to connect with the Hispanic world."

Leadership and editorial standards

EFE's president, Gabriela Cañas, has championed agency journalism as what she calls "the purest form of journalism," describing it as breaking news, precision and the analysis of data journalism. Speaking to students at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in New Delhi, she argued that news agencies offer added security to journalistic work, since agency reporters must be exact and verifiable rather than sensational. She also noted that the agency is committed to gender parity, with women making up close to 45 per cent of its workforce. Cañas has said that EFE wants to increase its penetration in Asia, singling out India — the world's largest democracy — as a priority market for expansion. The agency presents itself as committed to serving the public interest, pluralism in society, informative rigour and the diversity of languages in Spain.

Distribution in India

EFE's multimedia services are already distributed in India through the Press Trust of India and through the Dailyhunt streaming platform, arrangements that Gabriela Cañas highlighted during her visit to the country. The agency has been actively courting Indian media houses and corporations as clients and partners, positioning its Spanish-language and international coverage as a bridge between India and the Hispanic world. The February 2023 "EFE News Cocktail" with Indian media and companies, hosted with the Indo Spanish Chamber of Commerce, was presented as the start of a deeper commercial and editorial relationship with the Indian market.

Milestones and recognition

In 2016, acting prime minister Mariano Rajoy inaugurated the EFE Agency Museum in Madrid and presented the second EFE Culture Awards, declaring EFE "one of the supporting pillars of Spanish culture." He recalled that although the agency was founded 77 years earlier, its roots reached back to the mid-19th century, and he credited it with obtaining and distributing international information in Spain and around the world, especially in Latin America and in areas where Spanish is spoken. The agency marked its 70th anniversary in 2009, and its president has said that EFE "remains focused on making history," continuing the same job it has always done: gathering and distributing international information across all formats and topics.

Accessing EFE's journalism

EFE's journalism for the public is available through its official website at efe.com, where selected stories, photographs and videos are published, and through its multimedia services portal. Media organisations and institutions interested in subscribing to EFE's wires, photo and video services can contact the agency through its corporate channels. In India, the agency's New Delhi bureau serves as the point of contact for editorial and commercial enquiries relating to India and South Asia coverage.
