About EJ Insight

EJ Insight

EJ Insight, published at ejinsight.com, is the English-language digital news service of the Hong Kong Economic Journal, the Chinese-language financial daily founded in 1973. Launched in February 2011, it publishes English editions of the Journal's business and political reporting together with original English commentary, making one of Hong Kong's most respected Chinese-language newspapers readable for the international audience that follows Hong Kong and China. Its content comprises a mix of original English reporting and pieces translated from the Chinese-language newspaper, an arrangement that gives it the resources of an established financial newsroom at digital speed. For readers who cannot follow the Chinese press, EJ Insight is one of the principal windows onto how Hong Kong's own financial journalism understands the city's markets, politics and place within China.

The Hong Kong Economic Journal behind it

To understand EJ Insight, begin with its parent. The Hong Kong Economic Journal was first published on 3 July 1973, founded by Lam Shan-muk, a former Ming Pao data collector and editor who wrote under the name Lin Hangzi, and it is recognised as Hong Kong's first Chinese-language newspaper devoted to financial and economic news. Published by Hong Kong Economic Journal Co., Ltd. and sold in Hong Kong and Macau, the paper built its reputation on serious coverage of economic news, government policy and financial affairs, aimed at intellectuals, executives and investors rather than a mass tabloid readership; its style relied on text and analysis where competitors relied on sensation and graphics. Lam wrote the paper's editorial column for decades. When the Journal eventually built its digital presence, it was extending a half-century-old franchise of financial authority rather than starting a new one.

Launch of the English service

The Journal launched its Chinese website, hkej.com, in July 2008, carrying the daily newspaper's content together with instant news, real-time stock quotes and financial data. In February 2011 it launched its English website, EJ Insight. The timing coincided with intense international interest in Hong Kong's role as China's financial gateway and in the Chinese economy's growing weight in world markets. An English service let the Journal address that interest directly, in its own voice, instead of being quoted at second hand. EJ Insight was from the start positioned as more than a translation wire: alongside translated reporting from the Chinese paper, it commissioned and published original English reporting and commentary written for international readers encountering Hong Kong and China stories through the Journal's newsroom.

Content: business first, politics alongside

True to its parent, EJ Insight leads with economics and finance: markets, companies, property, trade, monetary questions and the business of Hong Kong and mainland China. Around that core it carries the Journal's political reporting and analysis, because in Hong Kong the two are inseparable: government policy, Beijing's decisions and the city's constitutional position move markets, and market sentiment in turn shapes politics. The service also publishes the kind of signed commentary for which the Economic Journal is known in Chinese, including columns by Hong Kong public intellectuals and business figures, rendered in English. Sections span news, investment and features, and the site is updated through the day with the Journal's instant news, giving English readers a same-day sense of the stories leading Hong Kong's financial conversation.

The translation-plus-original model

EJ Insight's production model deserves attention because it shapes what readers get. Translation from a Chinese financial daily is not a mechanical exercise: financial terminology, company names, policy language and the allusive style of Chinese commentary all require editorial judgment, and the selection of which pieces to translate is itself an editorial act that decides what the international audience sees of Hong Kong's debate. Layered on top, original English reporting and commentary allow the service to explain context that Chinese readers would not need, and to address questions international readers actually ask about Hong Kong and China. The combination differentiates EJ Insight from both pure translation services and from English newsrooms in Hong Kong that lack a Chinese-language parent newsroom behind them.

Audience and role for international readers

The natural audience for EJ Insight is the international professional reader: investors, bankers, lawyers, academics, journalists and officials who follow Hong Kong and China but read English. For them the service supplies something otherwise scarce, the perspective of a Hong Kong newsroom writing first for Hong Kong. Its reporting is cited in international coverage of Hong Kong business and politics, and media databases classify it as an international-scope English and Chinese digital outlet of the Economic Journal group. In a media environment where much English-language writing about China is produced from outside the region, a Hong Kong financial daily publishing its own journalism in English holds a distinctive place, and EJ Insight was created to occupy it.

Sister digital services

EJ Insight is one of several digital titles through which the Economic Journal group extended its brand online. The Chinese flagship hkej.com remains the largest, and the group has also operated a lifestyle website, LifeStyle Journal, and an education site, iknow.hkej, aimed at the liberal-studies curriculum then taught in Hong Kong schools. Contemporary industry coverage of the group's digital activity listed EJ Insight first among those extensions, reflecting its strategic role as the group's face to the English-reading world. Together the titles show a traditional newspaper publisher segmenting its digital audience the way it once segmented print sections: finance and news in depth for professionals, lifestyle content for general readers, education content for students and teachers.

Hong Kong context and editorial character

The Economic Journal has historically been regarded as one of Hong Kong's more independent-minded serious newspapers, a proponent of the free economy that also published critical commentary on government and politics. EJ Insight inherits that character for English readers. Its pages carry analysis of Hong Kong's governance, its economic model and its integration with mainland China that reflects the city's own internal debates rather than any external brief. Since the paper's founding in 1973 it has chronicled Hong Kong's growth story at close quarters, and its English service makes that accumulated institutional knowledge available internationally. Readers of EJ Insight encounter Hong Kong not as a dateline in someone else's story but as the subject and author of its own financial journalism.

Continuing publication

EJ Insight continues to publish at ejinsight.com as the English service of the Hong Kong Economic Journal, updating with the group's reporting and commentary on business, markets and politics. More than a decade after its February 2011 launch, it remains a working bridge between Hong Kong's Chinese-language financial press and the world's English-language readers, and a standing example of how a legacy newspaper can use digital publishing to speak in a second language without surrendering its editorial identity.

Reading Hong Kong through EJ Insight

For an outside reader, the cumulative value of EJ Insight lies in sequence rather than in any single story. Following the service over months gives a sense of what Hong Kong's financial community itself is arguing about: the property market's direction, the fiscal position of the government, the competitiveness of the stock market, relations between Hong Kong and the mainland economy, and the political questions that bear on all of them. Because the underlying newsroom writes first for Hong Kong readers, the selection and emphasis differ from those of international outlets parachuting into the same stories, and the difference is the service's reason to exist. Media researchers treat such translated-and-original services as evidence of how a city's press presents itself to the world; practitioners treat EJ Insight more simply, as a daily briefing from inside the market they are watching.
