About Elle Canada
Elle Canada
Elle Canada is the Canadian edition of the international fashion magazine Elle, publishing fashion, beauty and lifestyle content for Canadian readers. Launched in 2001, it operated for years from Toronto under Transcontinental and then TVA ownership before its operating licence was acquired by Montreal-based KO Média in 2019 and its editorial operations were consolidated in Montreal. It remains a distinct English-language edition alongside its French-language sister, Elle Québec.
Overview
The magazine covers fashion, beauty, culture and lifestyle with a Canadian perspective, adapting the global Elle brand — one of the world's best-known fashion titles — to the Canadian market. Its readership has historically been upscale and female: early-1990s audience research on the Quebec edition found 82 per cent women readers, with adults 18–49 making up 70 per cent of the audience — richer and better educated than the norm, in the publisher's description. The brand was pitched at upscale working women with cosmopolitan cultural interests, readers the publisher described as independent, with a strong sense of self-affirmation: "We don't tell people what to do."
The Canadian edition entered publication in 2001 under Transcontinental. Its founding editor-in-chief was Rita Silvan, one of the magazine's founding members, who also appeared as a judge on Project Runway Canada; when she departed, Transcontinental promoted executive editor Noreen Flanagan — with the magazine since its second issue — to editor-in-chief in April 2010. At the time the magazine published monthly with paid circulation of 130,000 and staged an annual Elle Event show at Toronto's Carlu. Flanagan led the title through its record-breaking early-2010s run and was named the Canadian Society of Magazine Editors' 2016 Editor of the Year, with judges describing each issue as a fantasy vacation with a best friend — pampering and fun punctuated with conversations about things that matter. Elle Canada also won Magazine of the Year (medium circulation, tied) and the Jim Cormier Award for Display Writing that year.
Its 10th anniversary in 2011 was marked with the magazine's biggest issue ever — a 300-page April edition that continued a run of record-breaking page counts, featuring a "Mad Libs" anniversary feature from favourite Canadian novelists, a list of the top 10 beauty innovations of the decade, and reader contests including a Smart car giveaway. Editor-in-chief Noreen Flanagan, who had been with the magazine since its second issue and took the top job in April 2010, said the title had developed a distinctive voice, confidence and style over its first decade; PMB research put its readership at 1.5 million.
History
The Elle brand's Canadian history begins with Elle Québec, launched in the late summer of 1989 as the French-language edition — part of the global Elle network that by the early 1990s spanned 18 national editions, with the original French edition dating to the 1940s. The English-language Elle Canada followed in 2001, published by Transcontinental.
A landmark moment came in November 2016, when Vanessa Craft was promoted to editor-in-chief of Elle Canada, making her the first Black woman at the helm of an Elle magazine globally. Her predecessor, Noreen Flanagan — with the magazine since its second issue — had told the trade press that the title developed a distinctive voice, confidence and style over its first decade, and would continue to evolve. Craft led the title through its late-2010s transitions before departing to lead content partnerships at TikTok Canada.
Ownership changed twice in the 2010s. TVA Group acquired the title in 2015 as part of its $55.5-million purchase of Transcontinental's consumer magazines. After four years under TVA — a period that included 2019 layoffs across TVA's publications group — the Elle brand licence was acquired in May 2019 by Montreal-based KO Média, the company of television personality Louis Morissette, approached by global brand owner Lagardère. KO, whose portfolio included women's titles such as VÉRO, described Elle as deeply rooted in Quebec and Canadian culture and a natural integration. Elle Canada remained in Toronto initially with plans for a new office and an expanded team, while Elle Québec — operating from Montreal for three decades — was unaffected.
The consolidation continued in October 2020, when Groupe KO closed Elle Canada's Toronto office and eliminated four full-time positions. The company stressed that Elle Canada would continue as a separate entity from Elle Québec; the small Toronto team moved to permanent work-from-home, English-specific sales representation continued, and editorial operations were repatriated to the Montreal head office with freelancers across Canada — aiming, in the company's words, for a stronger editorial voice across Canada under one leadership and easier national programs for advertisers.
Content
Elle Canada's editorial content follows the Elle formula: fashion editorials and trend coverage, beauty reporting and tutorials, cultural features, and lifestyle journalism. The Quebec edition's classic structure — fashion and beauty alongside lifestyles coverage of culture, society and psychology, with editorial content almost entirely Québécois — illustrates how the brand localizes: international fashion authority filtered through Canadian and Québécois voices. A 1993 breakdown of a 220-page September issue of the Quebec edition showed 103 pages of advertising to 117 of editorial — the luxury-advertising density that has always been the brand's commercial engine.
Digital-era initiatives have included video: in 2015 the magazine hunted for its first beauty vlogger through a public contest, with the winner producing weekly editorial how-to videos and brand collaborations for the Elle Canada Closet, the site's shoppable video section launched with Dior content. The core demographic for the vlogger program was women 18 to 28 — the next generation of the brand's readership. The title has also taken the brand into live events: it launched The Elle Show, a consumer show at Toronto's Exhibition Place, bringing the magazine's pages to life with nine runway shows, beauty and wellness seminars, makeovers and exhibits — plus the annual Elle Beauty Grand Prix, a blind-testing beauty-product competition run with Elle Québec. Earlier, Spring Style Lounge events with property owner Ivanhoe Cambridge brought the magazine into Greater Toronto Area malls, with an H&M-styled Elle Canada closet, mini-makeovers and trend presentations by fashion editor Anthony Mitropoulos.
Coverage & Audience
Elle Canada serves English-Canadian women interested in fashion, beauty and culture, with Elle Québec serving the francophone market from Montreal. The brand's audience is national, upscale and style-conscious, and its advertisers are the luxury, fashion and beauty brands for which Elle is a canonical environment worldwide.
Ownership
The Elle brands in Canada are operated under licence from global brand owner Lagardère by KO Média (Groupe KO), the Montreal-based company owned by Louis Morissette, which acquired the operating licence from TVA Publications in May 2019. TVA had owned the titles since its 2015 acquisition of Transcontinental's consumer magazines; Transcontinental had published Elle Canada since its 2001 launch. Editorial operations are consolidated at KO's Montreal head office, with Elle Canada continuing as a distinct English-language entity.
Digital Presence
The magazine's website, ellecanada.com, carries its fashion, beauty and lifestyle content online, including the shoppable video initiatives and contest programming the brand has used to engage younger readers. The 2020 consolidation moved the digital operation under Montreal leadership alongside Elle Québec, with freelancers across the country feeding both editions. As with all fashion titles, the brand competes for style attention with social platforms and influencers — a contest in which the Elle name's global authority remains its strongest asset.
