About Energy Hamburg

Energy Hamburg

Energy Hamburg is the Hamburg station of the French NRJ Group — a private CHR broadcaster for Hamburg and its surroundings, on air since 4 October 1995 on 97.1 MHz. It succeeded the Jazz Welle plus Hamburg, whose operations ceased overnight from 3 to 4 October 1995. Since 1 March 2021 it broadcasts in Hamburg on channel 10D, in Kiel on 5A and in Lübeck on 9D via DAB+. The station is known for spectacular stunts, including an April Fools' joke in 2000 that the Mir space station might crash on Hamburg — prompting police calls — and an impromptu party in front of the Bayern Munich players' hotel the night before a 2002 St. Pauli match.

Overview

Energy Hamburg is a private CHR station for the greater Hamburg, Kiel and Lübeck areas, part of the NRJ Group (100% NRJ-owned per the group's country table). Programmes are made in Hamburg under the "Hit Music Only" slogan. Its transmitters are the Heinrich-Hertz-Turm, Lohbrügge (eastern relays) and Wedel; the technical FM reach in greater Hamburg covers about 2.3 million listeners, with roughly a quarter of Hamburg's 14–29-year-olds — some 220,000 people — listening daily (older figures).

History

Energy Hamburg succeeded Jazz Welle plus Hamburg on 4 October 1995, taking over 97.1 MHz. The station made headlines with spectacular coups: on 31 March 2000 it jokingly claimed the Mir space station could crash on Hamburg — revealed as an April Fools' joke the next day after police received calls; in February 2002 it organised an impromptu party in front of the Bayern Munich players' hotel the night before a home match against FC St. Pauli to disturb their sleep. In November 2004 host "Waggaman" Philipp Kolanghis set a world record for continuous moderation. In September 2005 the audiovisual authority fined the station €10,000 for a March broadcast from the Herbertstraße red-light district — "exposure of sexual practices to minors and promotion of prostitution".

The 97.1 MHz frequency became a legal saga: the Medienanstalt Schleswig-Holstein/Hamburg re-awarded the Hamburg FM capacities and, in its 6 November 2019 selection decision, assigned them from 1 August 2020 not to the incumbent Energy Hamburg but to competitor FluxFM. The Radio 97,1 MHz Hamburg GmbH objected and sought interim relief; on 14 May 2020 the Hamburg Administrative Court largely granted the urgent applications, finding that FluxFM had not submitted an eligible application — allowing Energy continued provisional use of the frequencies pending the main proceedings.

Programming

Energy Hamburg plays current hits — the CHR programme under the "Hit Music Only" slogan, made in Hamburg with local news, service and events.

Coverage & Audience

Energy Hamburg broadcasts on FM 97.1 MHz in Hamburg, on DAB+ in Hamburg (channel 10D), Kiel (5A) and Lübeck (9D) since 1 March 2021, via cable and as a worldwide livestream. The technical FM reach in greater Hamburg is about 2.3 million listeners.

Ownership

The operator is the Radio 97,1 MHz Hamburg GmbH, part of the French NRJ Group — Europe's largest commercial radio group, listed on Euronext Paris.

Digital Presence

The station operates energy.de/hamburg with a livestream alongside apps and social media channels, extending its CHR programme to listeners beyond the terrestrial footprint. The digital offering carries the station's hits, Hamburg news and event formats on demand.

From Jazz to Energy Overnight

Energy Hamburg went on air on 4 October 1995 on 97.1 MHz — literally overnight: in the night from 3 to 4 October 1995 the jazz station Jazz Welle plus Hamburg ceased operations and Energy took over the frequency. The predecessor had started on 16 November 1991 as a local private jazz programme from a small studio in Hamburg-Osdorf, produced partly by its shareholders in volunteer evening and weekend shifts; with a market share constantly below 1.0% and no cultural-project funding from the city of Hamburg, the advertising-financed jazz experiment could not survive. The 97.1 MHz licence itself had been contested by five applicants — alongside Jazz Welle plus Hamburg, Radio Ladies First, City Radio Hamburg, Evangeliumsradio and Radio St. Pauli. Energy Hamburg, owned 100% by the French NRJ Group, turned the frequency into Hamburg's CHR youth station.

Stunts, Records and a €10,000 Fine

Energy Hamburg made headlines with spectacular stunts: on 31 March 2000 it made listeners believe the Mir space station could crash on Hamburg — an April Fools' joke confessed the same day after police received calls; in the night before a 2002 FC St. Pauli home match against Bayern Munich the station threw an improvised party in front of the Bavarian players' hotel to disturb their sleep; and in November 2004 presenter "Waggaman" Philipp Kolanghis set a world record in continuous presenting. Less amusing was September 2005, when the media authorities fined the station €10,000 for a March broadcast from the Herbertstraße — for "exposing sexual practices to minors and promoting prostitution", after the presenter had talked with two journalists and two prostitutes detailing their practices.

Hamburg's Youth Station Today

The station can be received in greater Hamburg by 2.3 million potential listeners; a quarter of Hamburg's 14-to-29-year-olds listen to Energy Hamburg daily — 220,000 people. Since 1 March 2021 the station has also been on DAB+ (Hamburg channel 10D, Kiel 5A, Lübeck 9D) alongside FM 97.1 MHz, cable and livestream. The programmes are made in Hamburg under the "Hit Music Only" slogan — the NRJ Group's northern flagship, three decades after the overnight switch from jazz to hits.

History: Jazz Welle's Successor Since 1995

Energy Hamburg is the successor of the station Jazz Welle plus Hamburg, whose operation ceased in the night of 3 to 4 October 1995. Since 4 October 1995 it has broadcast as the Hamburg station of the French NRJ Group — originally on FM 97.1 MHz from the Heinrich-Hertz-Turm (plus the 100.9 MHz fill frequency at Lohbrügge), with a programme produced entirely in Hamburg. In the media region of Hamburg, Kiel and Lübeck the station built itself into the city's only private hit youth radio, reaching some 2.3 million people in the Hamburg metropolitan area; more than a quarter of Hamburgers aged 14 to 29 listened daily.

The FM Licence Loss of 2020

In a shock for the Hamburg radio market, the media authority MA HSH decided to award the 97.1 MHz frequency to the Berlin alternative format FluxFM from 1 August 2020 instead of renewing Energy's licence. Managing director Olaf Hopp called the decision disappointing — not only for the roughly 800,000 listeners for whom Energy had been a fixture of the Hamburg radio market for almost 25 years, but for the station's Hamburg staff — and said it removed the market's only private youth hit radio. Energy Hamburg continued exclusively digital: via DAB+ on channel 10D in Hamburg, 5A in Kiel and 9D in Lübeck (since 1 March 2021), via cable, stream and app. The station kept its identity as Hamburg's hit-music station for a young audience, staying present at city events such as its media partnership with the Christopher Street Day and political dialogue around the Hamburg state elections — and remains part of the nationwide Energy Deutschland network with its sister stations in Berlin, Munich, Nuremberg, Bremen, Saxony and Stuttgart.

Programming and Digital Presence

As a CHR station under the slogan "Hit Music Only", Energy Hamburg plays the hits of the moment, with music directions including Black, House and Mash Up. The programme is aimed at a young audience and is supplemented by the nationwide Energy network's digital offering: the Energy app and webstream, the Energy Deutschland website, and social channels where the station promotes its concerts, private gigs with national and international stars, and city events. Reception today is digital-first: DAB+ channels 10D (Hamburg), 5A (Kiel) and 9D (Lübeck), digital cable, IPTV and the stream — keeping the Hamburg station of the NRJ Group present in its media region despite the FM loss.
