About Ernährungs Umschau

Ernährungs Umschau

The Ernährungs Umschau is the leading German-language scientific journal for nutrition professionals, published from Wiesbaden. Since its first issue in June 1954 it has served as the official organ of the German Nutrition Society (DGE), publishing reviews and original papers from the entire field of nutritional science – including eating behavior, nutritional economics, public health nutrition and nutritional medicine – alongside practice news, conference reports and certified continuing education. Listed in the Web of Science with an impact factor, bilingual in German and English, and combining a subscription print edition with open-access research articles and a daily updated online portal, the Ernährungs Umschau is the central specialist medium for nutrition scientists, dietitians and nutrition counselors in the German-speaking world.

Overview

The Ernährungs Umschau is published in Wiesbaden and describes itself as the highest-circulation German-language specialist journal for nutrition professionals available by subscription. Its program covers the whole of nutritional science and dietetics: review articles and original papers on nutritional physiology, eating behavior, nutritional economics, public health nutrition, nutritional medicine and other areas relevant to balanced human nutrition. In addition, the journal carries current information and news from practice – conference reports, book reviews – and contributions to continuing education.

The readership consists of specialists from various disciplines, above all ecotrophologists, dietitians, certified nutrition counselors and nutritional physicians, working in research, clinical practice, counseling, public health and the food industry. Contributions contain verifiable scientific research results and overviews of the current state of research; opinions and statements are labeled as such. Texts are written to be understandable, with technical terms explained, and manuscripts undergo editorial revision. The publication languages are German for the print edition, the e-paper and all rubrics, and English for peer-reviewed contributions, which appear open access.

A distinctive feature is the journal's certified continuing education: subscribers can complete certified training six times a year, earning points for the certificates of the DGE, the VDD (Association of Dietitians) and the VDOE (Association of Ecotrophologists), as well as CME points for physicians recognized by the State Medical Chamber of Hesse. The journal is listed in the Web of Science (Science Citation Index Expanded) with a current impact factor of 0.9, and is also covered by Scopus and other scientific databases. The print ISSN is 0174-0008.

History

The first issue of the Ernährungs-Umschau appeared in June 1954. The occasion for its founding was the establishment of the German Nutrition Society (DGE) in November 1953 and the general need for a bulletin for nutrition matters in Germany. From the beginning the journal took on the task of communicating knowledge across the whole field of food and nutrition in the German language – a mission to which it has remained faithful, even as it evolved from a society bulletin into a full-fledged scientific journal aimed primarily at professional intermediaries.

The journal's institutional ties grew over the decades. In 1958 it also became the organ of the association of state-recognized dietitians and nutrition counselors, in 1964 that of the quality association for diet catering (Gütegemeinschaft Diätverpflegung), and in 2002 the association of graduate ecotrophologists (VDOE) joined. These affiliations anchored the journal in the professional organizations of the nutrition field and secured its readership among practitioners. In June 2014 the journal celebrated its 60th anniversary, looking back on six decades of accompanying the developments in the many subfields of nutritional science and dietetics – from the post-war concerns with adequate nourishment to today's debates on sustainability, obesity prevention and personalized nutrition.

The journal's content development mirrors that of the national nutrition situation and of nutritional science itself, from post-war food security through the rise of diet-related chronic disease to today's focus on sustainable and healthy diets. What began as a bulletin for a young professional field became a peer-reviewed journal with an impact factor, bilingual publishing and open-access research articles, while retaining its practical rubrics for the working nutrition professional. The publisher is listed as the Umschau Zeitschriftenverlag in Frankfurt, with the editorial office for print and online operated by mpm Fachmedien.

Content and Sections

The editorial structure of the Ernährungs Umschau combines science and practice. The scientific core consists of review articles and original papers from all areas of nutritional science, published in German in the print edition and in English as open-access full texts in the "Wissenschaft & Forschung" (science and research) rubric. These peer-reviewed contributions cover topics as diverse as the trans-fatty-acid content of baked goods, methods of sensory research, nutritional-medicine questions and issues of food and eating culture.

The practice sections carry current information from the professional world: conference and congress reports, book reviews, and news from the nutrition societies and professional associations. Contributions to further education support the professional development of readers, culminating in the certified training modules offered six times a year. The journal's title remains its program: physiological foundations are covered alongside practical aspects of nutrition therapy, giving nutrition professionals in research and practice a current, well-researched overview and pointing to new developments.

The online portal extends the print rhythm with daily updated information, background reports and interviews on exciting projects from science and practice. This digital layer addresses the changed reading behavior of the audience: specialist information has become more granular and shorter-lived, and the editorial team uses the portal to provide fast, reliable orientation in a media environment where the effort of verifying the seriousness of information has grown enormously.

Publisher and Organization

The Ernährungs Umschau is published from Wiesbaden, where the journal's team of 11 to 50 employees is based according to its company profile. The publishing house is recorded as the Umschau Zeitschriftenverlag in Frankfurt am Main. The journal serves as the official organ of the German Nutrition Society (DGE) and is affiliated with the professional associations of dietitians and ecotrophologists, giving it a quasi-official status in the German nutrition field.

The editorial work for print and online is handled by mpm Fachmedien, while marketing and advertising management are organized through the publisher's own contacts in Wiesbaden. The journal maintains author guidelines for manuscript submission in German or English, with peer review for the scientific contributions and editorial revision for all texts. This professional editorial infrastructure, combined with the backing of the DGE and the professional associations, underpins the journal's position as the leading specialist title for nutrition professionals.

Digital Presence

The digital presence of the Ernährungs Umschau centers on its portal ernaehrungs-umschau.de, through which the team delivers daily updated information, background reports and interviews from science and practice. The portal hosts the open-access English full texts of the peer-reviewed research articles, making the journal's scientific output freely available to an international audience, while the German print content and e-paper serve the subscriber base.

The journal is active on social media, with presences on Instagram and Facebook that extend its reach to younger nutrition professionals and students. The certified continuing-education modules are administered online, allowing subscribers to earn their DGE, VDD, VDOE and CME points digitally. The combination of a subscription print journal with impact-factor-listed research, open-access English articles, daily online news and social media presence makes the Ernährungs Umschau a fully hybrid specialist medium: a print read for in-depth science and a digital companion for the daily professional life of nutrition specialists, from the laboratory to the counseling practice.
