About ETV Abhiruchi

ETV Abhiruchi: The ETV Network's Telugu Channel Dedicated to Food

ETV Abhiruchi is a Telugu-language food and cookery channel from the ETV Network, based in Hyderabad, Telangana. Launched on 14 November 2015, it was created to give Telugu viewers a television service devoted entirely to cooking: recipes, regional cuisines, festive dishes, healthy eating and kitchen craft, broadcast around the clock. The channel takes its name from Abhiruchi, a long-running and much-loved cookery programme on the flagship ETV channel, and it extends that programme's legacy into a full channel. It sits within one of India's most established regional broadcasting families, promoted by Ramoji Rao of the Ramoji Group, whose interests span the Eenadu newspaper, the ETV channels and Ramoji Film City on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

Launch in November 2015

ETV Abhiruchi arrived as part of the biggest single expansion in the ETV Network's history. On 14 November 2015, Eenadu Television launched four new Telugu channels at the same time — ETV Plus for comedy, ETV Cinema for films, ETV Life for health and lifestyle, and ETV Abhiruchi for food — taking the group's Telugu bouquet to seven channels and marking the largest one-day launch in the Hyderabad-based network's twenty-year run. The four channels went on air at 12:06 p.m., a precisely announced launch moment typical of the group. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had granted the licences earlier in 2015, with the channels classified as general entertainment services with uplinking permission. Ramoji Rao, who launched the channels, said he hoped they would meet the high expectations audiences held for the ETV brand, while network executives predicted the new services would become major hits in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, with a particular focus on younger viewers.

A Name Borrowed from a Television Institution

The channel's name was a deliberate act of inheritance. Abhiruchi had been a fixture of ETV's schedule as a cookery show long before 2015, familiar to generations of Telugu home cooks. By naming the new food channel after it, the network signalled continuity: viewers were not being asked to trust an unknown brand, but to follow a programme they already knew into a dedicated home where food content would run all day rather than in a single slot. The strategy matched the wider logic of the 2015 expansion, in which each new channel took one strand of the flagship general entertainment schedule — comedy, cinema, lifestyle and food — and developed it into a specialist service in its own right.

Programming: Cookery in Every Register

The schedule of ETV Abhiruchi is built from cookery formats of many kinds. Ruchula Vindhu presents vegetarian and non-vegetarian recipes made from widely available ingredients, with attention to the nutritional value of what goes into each dish, in a style aimed at viewers learning to cook as much as at experienced hands. Pindivantalu, whose title refers to pastry and flour-based dishes, invites guests to share distinctive sweet and snack recipes, from traditional items such as undrallu and kobbari rawa pongal to malai laddu. Designer Dish ranges across snacks, starters, main courses and desserts, and has been noted for helping home cooks turn leftovers into inventive meals. Soups and Starters, hosted first by Monica and later by Aparna, concentrated on quick, appetising openings to a meal, mixing Indian favourites with less expected combinations such as basil and brown rice soup or peanut butter corn soup.

Food for Children, Festivals and Health

Beyond general cookery, the channel serves specific audiences and occasions. Chota Chef puts children in the kitchen, with young cooks preparing simple, innovative recipes suited to a child's perspective, and marking festivals such as Sankranti, Diwali and Republic Day with special dishes. Festival cooking more broadly is a recurring strand: special programmes demonstrate the sweets and savouries associated with celebrations such as Pongal, explaining traditional preparations step by step for home kitchens. Health-oriented formats are equally prominent. Diet Menu, presented by Dr. Janaki, offers alternatives between indulgent and wholesome eating, with recipes ranging from millet khichdi and ragi pancakes to fruit salads and smoothies. Millets Magic, hosted by Sujitha with nutritionist Sridevi cooking, is devoted to millet varieties — finger, kodo, foxtail, little, barnyard and pearl millet among them — turning them into everything from dosas and idlis to biryanis, laddus and biscuits, with the health benefits of each grain explained as the cooking proceeds.

Place Within the ETV Network

ETV Abhiruchi is one element of a Telugu portfolio built over three decades. The flagship ETV channel, launched in August 1995, was among the first private Telugu satellite channels; the network later added two Telugu news channels for the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana markets, ETV Andhra Pradesh and ETV Telangana, alongside the 2015 entertainment expansion of ETV Plus, ETV Cinema and ETV Life. The group's non-Telugu channels were divested to the TV18 group earlier in the decade, leaving the network concentrated on its home language. Eenadu Television's chief executive at the time of the launch, K. Bapineedu Choudhary, said the new genres would be developed with subject specialists of high source credibility — a pledge visible in Abhiruchi's use of nutritionists and specialist cooks. The wider group also operates the ETV Bharat news portal and the ETV Win streaming application.

The HD Experiment and Return to Standard Definition

On 27 December 2018, ETV Abhiruchi launched a high-definition feed alongside HD versions of ETV Cinema, ETV Life and ETV Plus, giving food programming — a genre that benefits visibly from crisp close-ups of ingredients and finished dishes — a sharper picture for viewers with HD sets and packages. The experiment lasted less than two years: the HD version of ETV Abhiruchi closed on 24 October 2020, leaving the standard-definition channel as the continuing service. The SD channel itself has remained on air without interruption since 2015, and the brief HD chapter is a reminder of how Indian broadcasters tested premium feeds for niche genres during that period before consolidating around their core channels.

Distribution and Streaming

ETV Abhiruchi reaches viewers as a pay channel carried by cable and direct-to-home operators serving the Telugu market. Satellite listings place its signal on GSat-30 in C-band, transmitted in MPEG-4 under DVB-S2 with Irdeto encryption, consistent with a subscription channel distributed to platform operators rather than broadcast free-to-air. For viewers who prefer to watch on phones and connected screens, the ETV Win application — the network's own video-on-demand service, listed as the channel's official online home — carries ETV programming, and episodes of Abhiruchi shows are also published through the channel's official YouTube presence, where individual recipes can be searched, saved and replayed in the kitchen.

Audience and Appeal

The channel was designed, in the network's own launch framing, for food lovers, and its most loyal audience is the home cook: viewers looking for a dependable stream of new ideas for everyday meals as well as for festival tables. Its formats are deliberately practical — recipes use ingredients available in ordinary markets, presenters explain nutritional value alongside technique, and programmes such as Ruchula Vindhu and Pindivantalu have been described as easy to follow and friendly to beginners. At the same time, strands devoted to children's cooking, millet-based health food and inventive reinterpretations of leftovers keep the channel relevant to parents, health-conscious viewers and younger audiences the network said it wanted to attract.

Why ETV Abhiruchi Matters

Dedicated food channels are well established in English and Hindi television, but a full-time cookery channel in Telugu was a rarer proposition when ETV Abhiruchi launched. By converting one of its best-known programme brands into a channel, the ETV Network gave Andhra Pradesh and Telangana a culinary service rooted in the region's own ingredients, festivals and home-cooking traditions, while also ranging into national and international dishes. A decade on from its November 2015 debut, ETV Abhiruchi continues to hold that position: the food channel of a network whose name has been part of Telugu television since 1995, serving viewers for whom cooking is both daily necessity and cultural celebration.
