About FanDuel Sports Network Detroit

Overview

FanDuel Sports Network Detroit was an American regional sports network serving Michigan and parts of surrounding states, headquartered in Southfield. It was the longtime regional television home of the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball, the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL and the Detroit Pistons of the NBA. The network launched on September 17, 1997, as Fox Sports Detroit, and it operated under the Fox Sports banner until March 31, 2021, when it became Bally Sports Detroit. It was rebranded as FanDuel Sports Network Detroit on October 21, 2024, as part of the nationwide rebranding of the Bally Sports networks. Owned by Diamond Sports Group, which emerged from bankruptcy as Main Street Sports Group, the network carried its final live broadcast on April 15, 2026, the Red Wings' season finale against the Florida Panthers, and ceased operations on September 30, 2026, ending 29 years as Michigan's primary regional sports network.

Launch as Fox Sports Detroit

The network traces its origins to 1996, when News Corporation purchased 50% of the Prime Network and rebranded its regional sports networks under the Fox Sports Net banner. At the time, Post-Newsweek Stations owned the Detroit-based Pro-Am Sports System (PASS Sports), the Prime Network's local affiliate. News Corporation announced plans to launch a Fox Sports Net affiliate in Michigan and made a surprise bid for, and won, the local cable television rights to Detroit Pistons NBA games. When PASS Sports' NHL and MLB broadcast rights to the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Tigers came up for renewal, Fox Sports Net bid for the contracts and won them both. Fox Sports pushed the launch date of the new channel forward in time for the 1997-98 NHL season and the 1998 MLB season, and Fox Sports Detroit began broadcasting on September 17, 1997. Post-Newsweek concluded that its coverage area was not large enough to support two RSNs and sold the remainder of its Tigers and Pistons contracts, along with the contract of sportscaster John Keating, to Fox Sports Detroit. Post-Newsweek shut down PASS Sports on October 31, 1997, leaving Fox Sports Detroit as the sole regional sports network in Michigan.

Becoming Michigan's Exclusive Sports Home

From its launch until January 16, 2008, Fox Sports Detroit broadcast its studio shows from FSN Northwest's facilities in Bellevue, Washington. On October 1, 2009, the network unveiled a new all-digital, high-definition-capable studio in its Southfield headquarters dubbed the "Call Sam Studio," named after its sponsor, the Sam Bernstein Law Firm. The studio served as the production base of the pregame and postgame shows Tigers Live, Pistons Live and Red Wings Live, as well as the magazine shows of all three teams and all of the channel's other local programming. The channel shared professional team coverage rights with some Detroit-area broadcast television stations until the spring of 2008. In March 2008, the channel signed new long-term contracts with the Pistons, Red Wings and Tigers to broadcast more games than in previous years, becoming the exclusive local home of all three teams for the first time. A 720p high-definition simulcast feed was launched around the same time, and in 2010 Central Collegiate Hockey Association and MHSAA high school games began airing in HD.

The Sinclair Era and Bally Sports Detroit

On December 14, 2017, The Walt Disney Company announced plans to acquire the Fox Sports regional networks from 21st Century Fox, but on June 27, 2018, the Justice Department ordered their divestment on antitrust grounds, citing Disney's ownership of ESPN. On May 3, 2019, Sinclair Broadcast Group and Entertainment Studios bought Fox Sports Networks from Disney for $10.6 billion, with the deal closing on August 22, 2019. On November 17, 2020, Sinclair announced an agreement with casino operator Bally's Corporation for naming rights to the channels. On March 31, 2021, the day before the Tigers' Opening Day telecast, Fox Sports Detroit was rebranded as Bally Sports Detroit. Sinclair had one year to find a new name for the networks under a license agreement with Fox, and the Bally's deal covered 19 regional sports networks nationwide. No programming changes were announced with the rebrand, and the network continued to carry Pistons, Tigers and Red Wings games with the same on-air personalities.

Bankruptcy, the Xfinity Dispute and the FanDuel Rebrand

On March 14, 2023, Diamond Sports Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. As a result of the bankruptcy, a carriage dispute arose between Diamond Sports and certain cable companies, leading Xfinity to drop Bally Sports Detroit, along with all other Bally Sports networks, on May 1, 2024. Xfinity and Diamond reached a new agreement and Bally Sports returned to Xfinity customers on August 1, 2024. The network also attempted to drop its Tigers coverage ahead of the 2025 season as part of its bankruptcy restructuring, but ultimately continued with its contractual obligations. On October 16, 2024, it was revealed in a court filing that Diamond had reached a new sponsorship agreement with FanDuel Group, under which it intended to rebrand Bally Sports as FanDuel Sports Network. On October 18, 2024, Diamond officially announced the rebranding, which took effect October 21, and Fox Sports Detroit's successor became FanDuel Sports Network Detroit. Under the agreement, FanDuel had the option to take a minority equity stake once Diamond Sports exited bankruptcy.

Tigers, Red Wings and Pistons Coverage

For nearly three decades, the network was the center of Detroit sports television. Tigers broadcasts chronicled the franchise's remarkable resurgence from a 43-119 season in 2003 to World Series appearances in 2006 and 2012 and four consecutive American League Central division titles from 2011 to 2014, earning some of the highest local ratings in Major League Baseball and reported annual broadcast revenues of around $50 million. Red Wings broadcasts covered one of the NHL's flagship franchises through its playoff runs, and Pistons broadcasts followed the team's return to competitiveness. The network's on-air staff included some of the most decorated local broadcasters in Detroit history. John Keating, who had hosted pregame and postgame shows for the Tigers and Red Wings since his contract was transferred from PASS Sports in 1997, announced his retirement in December 2024 and left at the end of the Red Wings' season as a multiple local Emmy winner. Johnny Kane served as a sideline reporter and backup play-by-play announcer, and in February 2025 the Tigers named Daniella Bruce as the team's new on-field reporter.

The Teams Depart

The network's end came as its three flagship teams each found new broadcast homes. Amid uncertainties surrounding the network's future and Main Street Sports Group having terminated its agreements with all MLB teams under contract with the network, Ilitch Sports & Entertainment announced on February 9, 2026, that it would move the Tigers to MLB Local Media beginning in the 2026 MLB season, and that MLB Local Media would support distribution of the Red Wings' own broadcasts beginning with the 2026-27 NHL season, with the two teams carried on the part-time RSN Detroit SportsNet. On May 13, 2026, the Detroit Pistons announced that they would move to WMYD 20 as part of an agreement with Scripps Sports. The departures reflected the broader collapse of the regional sports network model: Main Street Sports Group had missed scheduled rights payments to several teams during its ongoing financial struggles, and franchises increasingly chose to take control of their own local distribution.

Final Broadcast and Closure

Main Street Sports Group anticipated that all FanDuel Sports Network channels would wind down their operations following the 2025-26 NBA and NHL regular seasons. The Detroit channel carried its final live broadcast on April 15, 2026, the Red Wings' season finale against the Florida Panthers. Although the Pistons reached the NBA playoffs, the NBA's new media rights deals no longer allowed regional broadcasts during the first round. Like the other FanDuel Sports Networks, the Detroit channel continued to carry mostly pre-recorded low-budget programming until its closure on September 30, 2026. The closure ended a 29-year run that had begun when Fox Sports Detroit launched in September 1997 to replace PASS Sports. The Tigers moved to MLB Local Media distribution with Detroit SportsNet streaming available through MLB.com, the Red Wings launched their own broadcasts with MLB Local Media support, and the Pistons moved to free over-the-air television on WMYD 20 with Scripps Sports. The network's former official website was fanduelsportsnetwork.com.
