About Fathom Consulting

Fathom Consulting is a London-based boutique consultancy specialising in macroeconomics, financial markets and geopolitics. Operating under the trading name of Fathom Financial Consulting Limited, the firm provides independent macroeconomic research and bespoke consultancy to financial institutions, governments and companies, helping them make sense of the forces shaping the global economy.

A boutique macroeconomic consultancy

Fathom describes itself as a world-leading consultancy specialising in the global economy, geopolitics and financial markets. Unlike large multi-service firms, it is a deliberately small, independent outfit: Fathom Consulting is a trading name of Fathom Financial Consulting Limited, a company registered in England and Wales under company number 04942817. The firm supplies independent research and presents forecasts to a client base concentrated in financial services, alongside governments and blue-chip industrial companies in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States. Its work sits at the intersection of economics, geopolitics, financial markets and technology, and it has built a reputation for original analysis and for taking contrarian positions on major economic questions.

Born at the Bank of England

The idea for Fathom was born in the 1990s at the Bank of England, where the firm's founders worked as economists. What began as a pipe dream between friends became a plan to bring the analytical rigour of the central bank into the private sector, creating a consultancy with the brainpower to tackle complex and intractable problems, fiercely independent and free from the traditional and hierarchical culture of a central bank. That origin story has shaped the firm's identity ever since: Fathom positions itself as an institution that applies central-bank-grade quantitative discipline to commercial questions, without being beholden to any official line.

Connecting macroeconomics, markets and geopolitics

The founding vision was to connect macroeconomics and financial markets. Within the Bank of England these two branches of analysis almost never met, and when they did they spoke different languages; the same division existed in industry. Fathom's founders believed that this separation led to serious mistakes, including errors made during the Global Financial Crisis. They set out to create more rounded, useful economic insights by connecting macro and markets. Since then, observing the powerful impact of political events on the world economy, the firm has specialised in a third element: geopolitics. Fathom now sees the global economy, markets and geopolitics as inextricably linked, and positions itself at this three-way intersection, carefully balancing all three in the work it does.

The founders and the early years

Fathom was founded by former Bank of England economist Danny Gabay, who built the firm around the idea of connecting macroeconomics and markets. The company won its first clients in 2003, supplying independent research and presenting forecasts. That same year Shamik Dhar, a former Bank of England colleague of Gabay's, joined him as a director. In 2004, Andrew Clare from Cass Business School (now Bayes Business School) joined the firm in an advisory role, adding academic depth to the team. These early years established Fathom's model: a tight-knit group of economists, many with central banking or academic backgrounds, producing high-conviction research for paying clients.

Erik Britton and the current leadership

In 2007, Erik Britton joined Fathom as a director, and the firm expanded into bespoke consultancy work. Britton, now Managing Director and Chief Executive, is responsible for designing and implementing the company's strategy, guiding its research, and winning and leading major projects. His own background exemplifies the firm's Bank of England lineage: he spent five years at the Bank, where he ran its UK macroeconomic model, coordinated its international forecast, and managed a team of economists in the Monetary Analysis Division. During his time there he developed the 'fan chart', introduced in 1996, which transformed how the Bank communicated its forecasts by showing not just the central projection but the range and probability of possible outcomes around it. He subsequently co-authored the Bank's seminal paper explaining the methodology, an approach that has since been adopted by other central banks and remains widely used in economic forecasting around the world. Britton holds a BA (Hons) in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from the University of Oxford and an MSc in Economics from Birkbeck College, University of London. Alongside him, the management team includes Laura Eaton as Chief Operating Officer, Joanna Davies as Chief Commercial Officer, Andrew Harris as Deputy Chief Economist and Brian Davidson as Director of Macroeconomic Forecasting and Energy.

Key calls: from the housing bubble to the financial crisis

Fathom's public history highlights several forecasts that have defined its reputation for independent thinking. In 2005, the firm warned of stretched UK housing valuations and described a scenario in which UK interest rates would fall as low as 2 per cent, a call made well before the financial crisis made ultra-low rates the norm. In 2008, Danny Gabay and Erik Britton warned clients of the high risk of a banking crisis and global recession. Their view was unpopular at the time, but the Global Financial Crisis had in fact already begun. In 2009, Fathom held its first Monetary Policy Forum, designed to mirror the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee, at which Dr DeAnne Julius, Professor Willem Buiter, Dr Charles Goodhart and Dr Sushil Wadhwani called for central banks to undertake unconventional monetary easing. That policy was later adopted by all Western advanced economies to deal with the effects of the Global Financial Crisis.

Research products and data tools

Beyond bespoke consultancy, Fathom has developed a suite of data-driven tools. Its Financial Vulnerability Indicator offers a comprehensive assessment of sovereign, currency and banking risk for 176 countries, using econometric techniques and large amounts of data to estimate the likelihood of financial crises occurring in each quarter, grouping drivers into imbalances, flows and reversals alongside geographic factors such as domestic vulnerabilities, global shocks and contagion effects. Its Geopolitical Alignment Tracker assesses how likely a country is to align with either the United States or China in the event of a dispute between the two powers, using four fundamental drivers: trade ties, financial ties, military ties and political freedoms. The tracker is trained on the observed behaviour of countries in 24 previous geopolitical disputes, such as bans of Huawei technology and the sanctioning of Russia following its invasion of Ukraine, rather than merely on voting patterns at the United Nations, and it sorts more than 150 countries into US-leaning, Chinese-leaning and non-aligned groups. The firm also maintains Global Economic and Strategic Allocation Models, and publishes the 'Thank Fathom It's Friday' blog alongside 'Fathom: In Conversation', its economics podcast, which has included a ten-part series on the rise of China.

Who Fathom serves

Fathom's clients span governments, financial services firms and industrial companies. Its independent research and forecasts are aimed at investors and policymakers who need clarity on complex issues, and the firm has historically presented its analysis directly to clients around the time of major decisions such as triennial pension valuations. Senior advisers Tony Yates and Niki Anderson, both former Bank of England colleagues of Britton, were brought in to deepen the quality of the firm's macroeconomic and financial market analysis. Fathom's economists cover pensions, property, finance, politics, banking and economic modelling, and the firm works with clients on questions ranging from monetary policy and financial stability to de-globalisation, supply chains and the economic implications of artificial intelligence.

London headquarters and contact

Fathom Consulting is headquartered at 47 Bevenden Street, London N1 6BH, in the United Kingdom. The firm can be contacted at enquiries@fathom-consulting.com or on +44 (0) 20 7796 9561, and its official website is fathom-consulting.com. The word 'Fathom' itself, as the firm explains, conveys depth, careful measurement and understanding, and its mission has always been to seek the truth, producing original analysis with innovative approaches to give clients clarity on complex issues. Over more than two decades the firm has expanded and evolved, but its core values, independence, rigour and originality, have never wavered.

Standing in the industry

Fathom occupies a distinctive niche in the UK's economics consultancy market: a small, specialist firm whose economists are regularly sought out by the media and by investors for their views on the global outlook. Its alumni from the Bank of England give it unusual credibility on monetary policy and financial stability, while its expansion into geopolitics reflects a broader shift in how investors think about economic risk. In a market where many forecasters cluster around consensus, Fathom's willingness to stake out unpopular positions, from its early warnings on housing to its embrace of geopolitical analysis, has been central to its appeal to clients who value clarity over comfort.
