About Filmstream

Filmstream: SPI International's World Cinema Channel on Freeview

Filmstream is a free, advertising-supported movie channel specialising in independent films and world cinema classics. It is operated by SPI International, the global media company within the CANAL+ group, and in the United Kingdom — where this directory lists it from London — it is best known as a streaming channel on Freeview channel 269, as well as a long-standing presence on Samsung TV Plus. Its schedule is deliberately different from mainstream movie channels: festival winners, arthouse titles and restored classics rather than recent blockbusters.

The channel's catalogue spans more than seventy years of film-making, from Hollywood golden-age titles to contemporary European features that won prizes at Cannes, Venice and Berlin.

Overview

Filmstream is a FAST channel: free ad-supported streaming television. Viewers pay nothing and need no subscription; the service is financed by advertising and delivered over the internet to smart TVs and connected devices. SPI positions it as a curated alternative to on-demand browsing — a linear channel where the programming team chooses the films and the viewer simply settles in to watch.

That curatorial identity is the channel's defining feature. SPI describes the line-up as films celebrated at international festivals and honoured with the industry's best-known awards, including Oscars, the Palme d'Or at Cannes, the Golden Lion at Venice and the Golden Bear at the Berlinale.

History and Launch

Filmstream made its worldwide debut in the summer of 2020 on Samsung TV Plus in the United Kingdom. Announced at the end of July 2020, it was SPI's newest portfolio channel at the time, launching with a selection of independent movies and world cinema classics and with a promise that more popular titles would follow.

The UK was the channel's first market, and it became the template for an international rollout. Filmstream subsequently launched with Samsung TV Plus in Australia, then in India in March 2021, in the Netherlands, and in Sweden in April 2022, where SPI noted it was the fifth market for the channel. In 2024 the channel took a further step in its home launch market by joining Freeview in the UK on channel 269, bringing it to the country's main free television platform.

Ownership and Operator

Filmstream is operated by SPI International, also styled SPI/FilmBox, a global media company that runs a portfolio of television channels and digital services across six continents — 42 channels at the time of Filmstream's early expansion. SPI is part of the CANAL+ group, and Filmstream's arrival on Freeview was noted as only the second CANAL+ group channel to launch on the UK platform, following the Nollywood service ROK in 2022.

The executive most closely associated with Filmstream's expansion is Georgina Twiss, SPI International's managing director for Western Europe and Africa, who fronted the announcements for its launches in India, the Netherlands, Sweden and on Freeview. At the channel's original Samsung debut, SPI's chief operating officer Guney Yasavur explained the thinking behind it, pointing to viewers who still wanted the relaxed experience of linear television within an on-demand world.

Programming and Schedule

The schedule mixes two strands. The first is classic cinema: titles highlighted by SPI include A Farewell to Arms (1932), the adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's novel starring Gary Cooper; Charade (1963), the Paris-set thriller with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant; and Cyrano de Bergerac (1950), the Academy Award-winning film built around Jose Ferrer's performance as the swordsman-poet.

The second strand is contemporary international film. SPI has showcased titles such as The Ambassador to Bern (2014), directed by Attila Szász, and That Trip We Took with Dad (2016), directed by Anca Miruna Lazarescu, both of which collected awards at film festivals. Across the catalogue, the names SPI returns to most often are the canonical directors of world cinema: Hitchcock, Kurosawa and Fellini among them.

Availability and Platforms

In the UK, Filmstream is available in two main ways. It remains part of Samsung TV Plus, the free streaming service built into Samsung smart TVs, where it was first launched in 2020. It is also carried on Freeview channel 269 as a streamed service, which means viewers need a compatible Freeview television or box connected to the internet.

The Freeview launch was arranged through Global Distribution Services, with Axiom managing advertising sales, and SPI said the channel could reach some 15 million Freeview households. Internationally, the same channel is available through Samsung TV Plus in markets including Australia, India, the Netherlands and Sweden.

Audience and Market

Filmstream is aimed at film lovers rather than casual channel-hoppers: viewers who value arthouse and classic cinema and who are underserved by mainstream movie channels concentrating on recent releases. Its catalogue approach suits the FAST market, where distinctive niche channels can build loyal audiences without the economics of a traditional broadcast licence.

For SPI, the channel also demonstrates a wider shift in television. Library content that once sat in catalogues between licensing deals can now sustain a permanent, branded channel of its own, monetised by advertising and distributed globally through smart-TV platforms at relatively low cost.

Sister Services

Filmstream sits within SPI's family of themed channels and streaming brands. Its closest sibling is Docustream, SPI's advertising-supported documentary channel, which launched alongside Filmstream in markets such as the Netherlands. The wider SPI/FilmBox portfolio includes the FilmBox-branded movie services and specialist channels such as FightBox for combat sports, Fast&FunBox for action sports and FunBox UHD for lifestyle programming in ultra-high definition.

On Freeview in the UK, its group stablemate is ROK, the CANAL+ group's Nollywood channel, which reached the platform in 2022 and paved the way for Filmstream's own Freeview arrival.

Notable Programmes and People

Because Filmstream is a film channel, its notable names are the directors and stars of its catalogue rather than presenters. Alfred Hitchcock, Akira Kurosawa and Federico Fellini headline the director list SPI uses to define the channel, while its classic Hollywood strand brings Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant and Gary Cooper to the schedule.

On the corporate side, Georgina Twiss has been the channel's consistent public voice across five national launches, and Samsung's Richard Jakeman welcomed the channel's original UK debut, describing it as a home where film lovers could immerse themselves in world cinema, arthouse and independent movies free of charge.

Recent Developments

The channel's most significant recent development was its launch on Freeview UK, announced as a milestone in SPI's mission to expand its global footprint and to place its content across a variety of platforms. Moving from a single smart-TV platform to the UK's principal free-to-air platform substantially widened Filmstream's potential audience in the market where it first appeared.

The channel also illustrates how the definition of a television launch has changed. When Filmstream appeared in 2020, it launched inside a television manufacturer's own streaming service rather than on a broadcast network, yet that debut was treated by its owner as a worldwide premiere and became the foundation for launches on three other continents. Its later arrival on Freeview completed the circle, placing a streaming-born channel on Britain's oldest free television platform and in front of an audience measured in tens of millions of households.

For viewers, the practical result is access to a kind of cinema that British television had largely stopped scheduling: mid-century Hollywood classics, European art films and festival prize-winners from countries whose cinema rarely reaches UK screens, all presented free of charge and without the need for a subscription or an account.

Filmstream's story is therefore one of steady, platform-by-platform growth: a Samsung TV Plus debut in Britain in 2020, a sequence of international launches over the following two years, and then a return to the UK spotlight with Freeview carriage — all while keeping the same editorial identity built on festival cinema and the classics of world film.
