About FlugRevue

FlugRevue

FlugRevue is a German monthly aviation magazine published by Motor Presse Stuttgart, covering commercial civil aviation, military aviation and space travel. With a spread circulation of around 22,600 copies (second quarter of 2023), it is one of the leading popular aviation journals in the German-speaking world, serving the broad community of aviation enthusiasts – from professional pilots and industry insiders to the passionate observers who follow every new aircraft type. It forms the aviation trio of Motor Presse Stuttgart alongside aerokurier, which covers general aviation, and Klassiker der Luftfahrt, which covers aviation history.

Overview

FlugRevue is the magazine for people whose passion is flight: it reports on the world of commercial aviation, military aviation and space travel with the journalistic depth of a specialist title and the accessibility of an enthusiast magazine. The monthly issues carry reportages and portraits of the newest aircraft models on the market, background reports on airlines, air forces and space programs, and the industry news that moves the aviation world – from aircraft orders and airline strategies to military procurement and space missions.

The readership is broad and passionate: professional pilots, aviation industry employees, military aviation personnel, and the large community of aviation enthusiasts who follow civil and military aviation as a hobby – the spotters, photographers and model builders who know every aircraft type by silhouette. The magazine serves this community with the combination of technical substance and narrative journalism that has defined popular aviation publishing for decades.

Within Motor Presse Stuttgart, FlugRevue is one of three aviation titles, each with its own territory: aerokurier covers general aviation – business aviation, air sports, gliding, ultralights and flight training – and serves as the official organ of the German Aero Club and AOPA Germany; Klassiker der Luftfahrt covers aviation history with historic photographs, three-view drawings and comprehensive documentations; FlugRevue covers the present and future of flight – commercial civil aviation, military aviation and space travel. Together the three titles give the publisher complete coverage of the aviation world.

The magazine appears monthly and is available in print, as an e-paper and through digital kiosk platforms. Its spread circulation of around 22,600 copies in the second quarter of 2023 makes it one of the strongest titles in the German popular-aviation segment, reflecting the enduring fascination of flight and the magazine's ability to serve it.

History

FlugRevue is published by Motor Presse Stuttgart, the Stuttgart-based special-interest publisher founded in 1946 by Paul Pietsch, Ernst Troeltsch and Josef Hummel in Freiburg as Motorsport GmbH – originally to finance the founders' racing activities – and renamed Motor-Presse Verlag in 1949 before moving to Stuttgart a year later. The publisher grew through acquisitions into one of Europe's largest special-interest publishers, with a portfolio spanning automobiles, motorcycles, aviation, lifestyle, sports and leisure, and today publishes more than 30 magazine titles.

Within this portfolio, aviation has long been a core segment: alongside FlugRevue the publisher's aviation titles include aerokurier, founded in 1957 as the monthly magazine for general aviation, and Klassiker der Luftfahrt, which began in 1999 as a special issue of Flug Revue before developing into an independent magazine. The relationship between the titles is close: Klassiker der Luftfahrt started life as a Flug Revue special, and the three titles share the publisher's aviation editorial competence.

At the end of 2015, Motor Presse Stuttgart relocated its aviation editorial offices from Bonn to Stuttgart, consolidating the aviation titles at the publisher's headquarters. In the course of this move, the then-motorcycle editor-in-chief Michael Pfeiffer took over the publishing responsibility and later the overall editorial direction for aviation and space at Motor Presse Stuttgart – a reorganization that strengthened the aviation segment's integration into the publisher's Stuttgart operations.

The magazine's editorial program has evolved with the aviation industry: the rise of the Gulf carriers and the Asian aviation boom, the consolidation of the European airline industry, the transformation of military aviation, the commercialization of space travel, and the industry's confrontation with climate change and sustainability – all have been covered as the defining stories of their eras. Through these transformations FlugRevue has maintained its identity as the popular magazine for commercial aviation, military aviation and space travel – the journal that brings the world of flight to the enthusiast's breakfast table every month.

Content and Sections

The editorial heart of FlugRevue is the aircraft reportage: in-depth reports and portraits of the newest aircraft types on the market, from airliners to military jets to the vehicles of the new space age. These features combine technical detail with narrative journalism – the development history, the engineering, the operational reality and the people behind the machines – illustrated with the aviation photography that is the genre's signature.

Commercial civil aviation forms a major pillar: airline portraits and strategies, fleet developments, new routes and aircraft orders, the economics of air transport, airport developments and the personalities who shape the industry. The magazine follows the global airline industry with the attention of an insider publication and the accessibility of an enthusiast title, covering the European carriers and the global players alike.

Military aviation forms the second pillar: air force portraits, aircraft procurement programs, exercises and operations, and the technology of military flight. The coverage addresses the professional military-aviation community and the large enthusiast audience that follows air forces with passion – the readers who attend air shows, photograph military aircraft and debate procurement decisions.

Space travel forms the third pillar: launch vehicles, space programs, satellites and the emerging commercial space industry. As space travel has moved from a state monopoly to a commercial enterprise, the magazine's space coverage has grown in importance, documenting the new space age for an audience that follows every launch.

Industry news, background reports and the visual journalism of aviation photography complete the program: the magazine's pages carry the work of Europe's and America's best-known aviation photographers, with infographics and profile drawings highlighting the aircraft reports. Special issues and bookazines – including the Klassiker der Luftfahrt editions that originated as Flug Revue specials – extend the brand into the premium segment.

Publisher and Organization

FlugRevue is published by Motor Presse Stuttgart GmbH & Co. KG, the Stuttgart-based special-interest publisher that has been owned by the founding families Pietsch and Scholten and by Hermann Dietrich-Troeltsch. The publisher's aviation segment is led from Stuttgart, where the aviation editorial offices were consolidated at the end of 2015, with overall editorial responsibility for aviation and space held by the publisher's aviation editorial leadership.

The magazine appears monthly with a spread circulation of around 22,600 copies (second quarter of 2023), positioning it as one of the leading popular aviation titles in the German-speaking market. It is published alongside the sister aviation titles aerokurier (monthly, general aviation, official organ of the German Aero Club and AOPA Germany) and Klassiker der Luftfahrt (eight times a year, aviation history) – a trio that gives Motor Presse Stuttgart complete coverage of the aviation world from the present of general aviation through the big jet age to the history of flight.

The publisher operates the corresponding online portals for its magazines, providing news and information on each title's topic free of charge – the digital extension of the print brands that serves the daily information needs of the enthusiast communities between print issues.

Digital Presence

The digital home of FlugRevue is flugrevue.de, the portal that extends the monthly magazine into continuous aviation coverage. The site publishes industry news, aircraft reports and background articles, serving the daily information needs of the aviation community between print issues – the enthusiast who wants to know about today's first flight, today's airline order or today's launch does not wait for the monthly issue.

The magazine is available as an e-paper through digital kiosk platforms, where readers can subscribe to the digital edition, browse current and past issues, and read on computers, tablets and smartphones – including offline reading for the flight itself. The digital editions complement the print magazine with the convenience of mobile reading and the archive of past issues.

The publisher's online portals for its aviation titles provide free news and information on their respective topics, extending the print brands into the daily digital journalism that the enthusiast communities expect. Social media channels carry the magazine's visual journalism – the aviation photography that is the genre's signature – to the spotters, photographers and enthusiasts who follow aviation online.

With its monthly print magazine, its daily-updated portal, its e-paper editions and its position within Motor Presse Stuttgart's aviation trio, FlugRevue remains the popular journal of the big aviation world – the magazine that brings commercial aviation, military aviation and space travel to the German-speaking enthusiast, every month and every day.
