About Forth 1
Forth 1 is Edinburgh's leading commercial radio station, serving the capital, the Lothians, Fife and Falkirk with current hits, big throwbacks and local news. Part of Bauer Media's Hits Radio network, it traces its history back to the launch of Radio Forth in 1975, making it one of Scotland's longest-established commercial radio brands.
History and Launch
Radio Forth was launched on 22 January 1975 by its chairman Richard Findlay, whose opening words were "This, for the very first time is Radio Forth". Steve Hamilton was the first on-air presenter, hosting the breakfast show. The station was among the first wave of Independent Local Radio stations licensed after the Sound Broadcasting Act 1972, bringing commercial radio to Edinburgh two years after Radio Clyde had pioneered it in Glasgow. In 1990, regulation required the station to split its FM and AM frequencies into separate services: the FM station became Radio Forth RFM, later simplified to Forth FM, with Donny Hughes broadcasting the first breakfast show from the newly revamped Studio F in Forth House, while the AM service became Max AM, later renamed Forth AM. In 2000 both stations were relaunched as 97.3 Forth One and 1548 Forth 2, with Forth One continuing to play Top 40 songs for younger listeners while Forth 2 became an adult contemporary station.
Ownership
Forth 1 is owned and operated by Bauer Media Audio UK, part of the German Bauer Media Group. Radio Forth was originally owned by Scottish Radio Holdings until 3 June 2005, when it was taken over by the British media group EMAP. In January 2008 EMAP's radio division was sold to Bauer, and the division was renamed Bauer Radio. The succession of ownership changes has brought more networked programming to the station, while its local breakfast show and news output have preserved its Edinburgh identity. The station is regulated by Ofcom.
Format and Programming
Forth 1 broadcasts a contemporary hit radio format aimed at under-35s, mixing current chart music with recent favourites and major throwbacks. The weekday schedule is largely presenter-led: Boogie in the Morning wakes up Edinburgh and the surrounding area from 6am, followed by daytime shows, drivetime and evening programming, with local news, travel and entertainment bulletins throughout the day. Weekends have a distinctive identity of their own, with Saturday morning programming and dance and club classics on Friday and Saturday nights. As part of Bauer's Hits Radio network, the station carries some networked programming alongside its local output.
Flagship Shows and Presenters
Boogie in the Morning, presented by Boogie and Arlene, is the centrepiece of the weekday schedule, waking up Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife and Falkirk from 6am with local conversation, competitions, news, travel, big hits and throwbacks. Grant Thomson takes over from 10am with The Throwback and his Throwback Takeover, followed by Garry Spence from 2pm with features including Spence Vs Shazam. Callum Gallacher presents the evening show from 6pm before Amber takes over from 10pm. The station's weekend identity is defined by George Bowie's GBXperience, which brings dance and club classics to Friday and Saturday nights, while Boogie and Arlene continue their partnership on Saturday mornings.
Broadcast Area and Frequencies
Forth 1 serves Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife and Falkirk. It broadcasts on FM on 97.3, 97.6 and 102.2 MHz, and on DAB digital radio on the Edinburgh multiplex, block 12D at 229.072 MHz. The station also streams live online through Radioplayer and Bauer's digital platforms, making it available to listeners well beyond its FM footprint, including the many Edinburgh expatriates who keep the station as a link to home.
Audience and Ratings
According to RAJAR, Forth 1 has a weekly audience of 383,000 listeners, as recorded in September 2024. The station has long been one of the strongest-performing commercial stations in Scotland, with a loyal audience built over five decades. Its breakfast show is among the most listened-to programmes in the Edinburgh market, and the station's local news and entertainment output gives it an authority that national services cannot match.
Digital and Streaming
Forth 1 streams live through Radioplayer UK and Bauer's Rayo platform, and its programmes are promoted across the station's social media channels. The station's website carries local news, showbiz stories and competitions, extending the brand beyond the broadcast schedule. As listening increasingly moves to smart speakers and mobile devices, the station's digital streams have become an important part of how Edinburgh audiences, at home and away, stay connected to the city.
Sister Stations
Forth 1 is part of Bauer Media's Hits Radio network, which includes stations across the UK such as Hits Radio in Manchester, Clyde 1 in Glasgow, Tay FM in Dundee, Northsound 1 in Aberdeen and MFR in Inverness. Its closest sibling is Greatest Hits Radio Edinburgh, Lothians and Fife, the former Forth 2, which plays classic hits for an older audience. The wider Bauer family in Scotland also includes stations such as Clyde 2 and the Scottish Greatest Hits Radio services, following the April 2023 rebrand that saw the heritage names Clyde 2, Forth 2, MFR 2, Tay 2 and Westsound all become Greatest Hits Radio. In January 2025, Forth 1's breakfast show expanded, replacing the separate local breakfast shows of MFR, Northsound 1 and Tay FM, reflecting Bauer's strategy of sharing successful programming across its Scottish stations.
Cultural Impact
For half a century, Radio Forth and Forth 1 have been woven into the life of Edinburgh and the east of Scotland. The station has soundtracked the city's festivals, football triumphs and everyday mornings, and its presenters have become local celebrities. Its charity work, notably through the Radio Forth Cash for Kids appeal, has raised significant sums for disadvantaged children across the region; Cash for Kids was also chosen as a charity partner of St James Quarter, the station's new home, alongside Deaf Action. The station's move from its historic Forth House studios to St James Quarter in June 2022 marked the end of an era: on 17 June 2022, during the breakfast show, the station played a farewell montage at 7.45am before walking to the new studios, where the first link was broadcast just after 8am and the first song played was "New Emotion" by The Time Frequency. Figures such as Tom Steele, a key member of the launch team, embody the station's deep roots in Scottish broadcasting: Steele began his career at Radio Clyde as its first employee in October 1973, moved to Radio Forth as Head of News ahead of the January 1975 launch, oversaw the splitting of the FM and AM frequencies into Forth 1 and Forth 2, and became Managing Director before retiring due to ill health in 1999.
Recent Developments
The station's relocation to St James Quarter in the heart of Edinburgh placed it at the centre of the city's newest retail and leisure destination, with street-level studios that bring the station closer to its audience. The January 2025 expansion of its breakfast show across MFR, Northsound 1 and Tay FM underlined Forth 1's status as Bauer's flagship station in the east of Scotland. With a strong FM and DAB presence, a growing digital audience and a schedule rooted in local voices, Forth 1 enters its second half-century as Edinburgh's commercial radio leader and Scotland's most enduring hit-music brand.
