About ForumIAS

ForumIAS

ForumIAS, at forumias.com, is an English-language digital portal based in New Delhi that publishes current affairs, examination news and preparation guidance for aspirants to the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination — the examination that selects officers for the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, Indian Foreign Service and other central services. Founded in 2012 as an online collaborative forum for civil services preparation, ForumIAS grew from a discussion community into one of India's best-known civil services preparation platforms, operated by Flaviant Network Private Limited. Startup data provider Inc42 classifies it as a bootstrapped education technology company headquartered in New Delhi, and its community-and-content model — daily current affairs, answer-writing practice, test series and mentorship — remains the template for the portal's publishing today.

Founding in 2012

ForumIAS was founded in 2012 by Ayush Sinha, founder of Flaviant Network Private Limited, as an online platform for young people preparing for the civil services examinations. Company publications state that in its first eight years the platform's community members and academy students produced Rank 1 in the Civil Services Examination and in the Indian Forest Service Examination — the latter, it states, three times — as well as in the Bihar State Public Service Commission examination, and that more than 4,000 ForumIAS community members and academy students were serving in services across the country and abroad. The founding idea was collaborative: at a time when preparation was dominated by expensive classroom coaching concentrated in a few Delhi neighbourhoods, an online forum let aspirants across India discuss questions, share notes and learn from successful candidates directly.

Ayush Sinha's own background is in engineering and management education: professional profiles record a bachelor's degree from the Manipal Institute of Technology between 2005 and 2009 and study at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in 2014, and he serves as a director of Flaviant Network. He remains the public face of the organisation, leading strategy sessions for aspirants after the preliminary examination and speaking for the academy on its results.

From discussion forum to preparation platform

The portal's architecture still reflects its forum origins. Alongside its main website, ForumIAS maintains a discussion platform where aspirants exchange strategies, booklists and examination experiences, and its study portal has historically organised free preparation initiatives under memorable names: Must Read News Articles and Must Read Newspaper selections of the day's essential reading, a "9 PM Brief" summarising the day's current affairs each evening, editorial analysis separate from news coverage, and a Mains Marathon for daily answer-writing practice. The platform described itself in that period as a single point of online IAS preparation, and as the only online website where structured interview preparation for the civil services was conducted, including published interview transcripts organised by candidate profile.

Over time the free community layer was joined by a formal academy offering structured programmes. Current flagship offerings listed by the organisation include a Current Affairs programme, the Mains Guidance Program, GS Foundation Program, All India Prelims Simulators, and cohort programmes run under names such as RankForge and Mains Focus Group. The trajectory — community first, courses second — distinguishes ForumIAS from coaching institutes that later added a website; here the website and its community came first.

Current affairs publishing

As an online news portal for aspirants, ForumIAS's core editorial product is examination-relevant current affairs. The Civil Services Examination tests current events across polity, economy, geography, environment, science and international relations, and the portal's daily work is to select, summarise and connect the day's news to the syllabus. Its initiatives have included curated must-read newspaper articles from national dailies, a separate in-depth analysis of editorials — which it noted was not commonly offered elsewhere — and compilations and free downloads organising current affairs for revision.

This curation is news publishing with a syllabus as its news values framework. An event is covered not only for its immediate significance but for its background, its constitutional or economic dimensions and its likelihood of generating preliminary or mains questions. For the directory reader, ForumIAS is therefore best understood as a specialised news service whose beat is the intersection of Indian current affairs and one examination's demands — a model later widely imitated across the civil services preparation industry.

Study material and toppers' content

A distinctive ForumIAS feature from its early years was its repository of study material produced by successful candidates themselves. The portal highlighted that its material for General Studies Mains and optional subjects included notes handwritten by toppers, shared through the platform — an authenticity claim that carried weight with aspirants sceptical of mass-produced coaching material. Sample notes were offered openly so candidates could judge quality before enrolling.

Topper content extends to strategy talks and mock interviews published on its YouTube channel, where successful candidates recount their preparation in detail. One such published account describes a candidate who left a job at Wipro, sustained himself with freelance work while preparing, and secured All India Rank 32 in the 2020 examination, while his brother secured Rank 170 in the same examination — both associated with the ForumIAS Foundation Program. The channel and portal together use these accounts as both guidance and evidence, and the organisation points to a run of top ranks from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana — including Rank 1 in 2017, Rank 7 in 2018 and Rank 43 in 2019 — among candidates who chose the platform.

Results and public claims

ForumIAS publicises its examination results prominently. In coverage of the Civil Services Examination 2023 results, the academy stated that its students secured six ranks in the top ten, twelve in the top twenty and more than forty selections in the top hundred, including All India Ranks 1, 3 and 5, and that this was the third consecutive year in which it had produced the examination's Rank 1. Founder Ayush Sinha attributed the outcomes to content differentiation, rigorous test-taking and personalised one-to-one mentorship. Such claims are the organisation's own and are presented here as its published position; in India's competitive coaching market, multiple institutes may claim association with the same successful candidates, who often use several services across a long preparation.

What is independently visible is the scale of the operation behind the claims. Inc42's company profile records ForumIAS as a bootstrapped company — founder-owned, without venture funding rounds — with revenue of more than 34.5 crore rupees in financial year 2025, an employee count of about 172, and monthly web traffic of about 1.56 million visits. Those figures place it among the substantial mid-sized companies of Indian education technology, achieved without external capital.

Programmes and test series

The portal's paid programmes map onto the examination's three stages. For the preliminary examination, it runs test series and full-length simulators designed to replicate the national test environment; historical programme documents describe a Prelims Test Series structure of mini General Studies tests, full-length tests and simulator tests for both General Studies and the CSAT paper, available in classroom, offline test-centre and online modes. For the mains examination, the Mains Guidance Program and answer-writing initiatives structure daily practice and evaluation. For the interview stage, it publishes guidance and transcripts and conducts mock interviews, with panels drawing on the experience of serving and retired officers and previous toppers.

Foundation programmes serve beginners with a combined prelims-cum-mains course, and newer cohort brands — RankForge for pre-cum-mains preparation and Mains Focus Group for mains candidates — organise students into mentored batches. Enquiry and admissions run through the academy's own website and helpline, with an active presence on Telegram, Facebook, X and Instagram for daily updates.

Audience and community

ForumIAS's audience is the national pool of civil services aspirants — graduates preparing full-time in Delhi's coaching districts and in their home towns, working professionals preparing alongside jobs, and students in smaller cities for whom the online forum was the original point of access to a national peer community. The discussion forum's persistence matters socially as well as academically: preparation for this examination commonly lasts several years, and a moderated community supplies continuity, material exchange and morale that isolated self-study lacks.

The organisation's slogan, "We Build Officers," and its description of alumni serving across national and international postings frame that community as a professional network extending beyond selection. The portal's free initiatives — daily briefs, must-read lists, marathon answer writing — remain the entry point through which new aspirants typically encounter the brand before any paid enrolment.

Ownership and business model

ForumIAS is operated by Flaviant Network Private Limited, headquartered in New Delhi, and Inc42 records the founder's shareholding at 100 percent with bootstrapped status. Revenue derives from programme fees for foundation courses, test series, mentorship cohorts and current affairs programmes sold through the portal and academy. The absence of venture funding is itself part of the company's identity in an education technology sector marked by heavily funded competitors and periodic shakeouts; ForumIAS has instead grown incrementally since 2012 on programme revenue.

Its web traffic — about one and a half million visits a month on Inc42's measure — reflects the combined draw of its news-style current affairs content, its discussion community and its course pages, each feeding the others: free content builds the community, the community supplies toppers and testimonials, and their success markets the programmes.

Place in civil services preparation media

ForumIAS is significant in the history of Indian examination media because it demonstrated, early, that a community-led website could stand alongside the established classroom institutes of Delhi. Founded as a forum in 2012, before India's education technology boom, it helped move civil services preparation from a geographically concentrated, print-and-classroom activity to a national online one, and its daily current affairs formats were widely copied.

For a directory of Indian online news portals, ForumIAS sits in the civil services preparation category alongside IASbaba and CivilsDaily, with its own distinguishing marks: the oldest founding date of the three, a discussion-forum heritage, a bootstrapped single-company structure under Flaviant Network, and a publishing model in which the day's news — curated, briefed at 9 PM and converted into questions, model answers and mentorship — is the product itself.
