About Fränkische Nachrichten

Fränkische Nachrichten

The Fränkische Nachrichten is the independent daily newspaper of the Franconian north of Baden-Württemberg, published in Tauberbischofsheim by the Fränkische Nachrichten Verlags-GmbH. Appearing since 30 July 1946 under a licence granted by the American military government, it is the leading local paper of the Main-Tauber district and the northern part of the Neckar-Odenwald district, with a sold circulation of 23,376 copies in the second quarter of 2025. In the German press landscape the paper occupies the classic position of a regional daily with its own newsroom: as a so-called Kopfblatt it produces its local and regional pages itself while drawing its national and international section from the Mannheimer Morgen, the flagship title of the Mediengruppe Dr. Haas, which holds 98 percent of the FN publishing company. The paper is also the official publication organ for the administrative districts of Main-Tauber and Neckar-Odenwald and publishes the weekly advertising paper Fränkische Wochenpost.

Overview

The Fränkische Nachrichten appears daily except Sundays as a subscription newspaper serving the Tauberfranken region, the Franconian-speaking north of Baden-Württemberg between the Odenwald and the Tauber valley. Its core distribution area covers the entire Main-Tauber district and the northern part of the Neckar-Odenwald district, a predominantly rural region of small towns, wine-growing villages and Mittelstand industry. The paper's sold circulation stands at 23,376 copies (IVW 2/2025, Monday to Saturday), a decline of 20.7 percent since 1998 that mirrors the broader structural erosion of the German regional press. It appears in the local editions Tauberbischofsheim, Bad Mergentheim (under the historic title Tauber-Zeitung) and Wertheim, each with its own local pages while sharing the common regional and national sections.

The readership of the Fränkische Nachrichten is the settled, locally rooted population of Tauberfranken: families, craftspeople, farmers, winegrowers, local councillors and the employees of the region's medium-sized manufacturers. The paper functions as the region's public record, carrying the official announcements of the Main-Tauber and Neckar-Odenwald districts as well as those of the major district towns of Bad Mergentheim and Wertheim and the towns of Buchen, Tauberbischofsheim and Walldürn and the municipality of Hardheim. Births, engagements, weddings and obituaries, church and club notices, school news and the fixtures of the local sports leagues fill pages that no supra-regional medium covers. In a region without a dominant urban centre, the FN is the medium through which the scattered communities of the Tauber valley, the Bauland and the Odenwald foothills learn about one another.

History

The Fränkische Nachrichten was founded in the immediate post-war period, when the American military government licensed a new democratic press in its occupation zone. The first edition appeared on 30 July 1946, initially three times a week with a volume of up to four pages. The young paper established itself quickly as the voice of the Baden part of Franconia, a region whose identity sits at the intersection of Baden-Württemberg administration and Franconian culture. From 1 March to 30 September 1949 the paper briefly operated a branch edition for Heilbronn under the title Heilbronner Abendpost, an early experiment in geographic expansion that lasted only a few months.

Between 1960 and 1968 the FN published, in cooperation with the town administration of Tauberbischofsheim, the magazine Bischemer Heimatbrief for the town's former citizens and friends at home and abroad, an early example of the paper's cultivation of reader loyalty beyond its circulation area. The decisive structural development came with the paper's integration into the HAAS Mediengruppe of Mannheim: the Fränkische Nachrichten Verlags-GmbH is today 98 percent owned by the Mediengruppe Dr. Haas, the publisher of the Mannheimer Morgen, from which the FN takes its national and international section. This arrangement, in which an independent local newsroom is combined with a shared national section, is the classic German Kopfblatt model and has secured the paper's journalistic breadth while keeping editorial control of the local pages in Tauberbischofsheim.

In autumn 2014 the Fränkische Nachrichten took over the Tauber-Zeitung of Bad Mergentheim, a paper whose history reached back to a first edition of 22 January 1791. The Neue Pressegesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, publisher of the Südwest Presse, had given up the title and sold the title rights together with the subscriber data to the FN; after approval by the Federal Cartel Office, the Fränkische Nachrichten continued the title from 1 May 2015 as an independent masthead without its own newsroom. Of the Tauber-Zeitung's last 21 employees, only three could be taken on, and since May 2015 the Bad Mergentheim paper has had no editorial staff of its own, its local and regional content coming from the Fränkische Nachrichten while the Mannheimer Morgen supplies the national section. In 2016 the FN celebrated its 70th anniversary with an open day at the Frankoniahaus, public exhibitions and a readers' festival. Since 2001 the paper has been online via an Infopark content management system and is also available as an e-paper in PDF form.

Coverage and Content

The editorial heart of the Fränkische Nachrichten is its local journalism for the Main-Tauber and northern Neckar-Odenwald districts. The local pages cover district and municipal politics in Tauberbischofsheim, Bad Mergentheim, Wertheim, Buchen, Walldürn and Lauda-Königshofen, the administrations of the two districts, the courts, the police and the fire services. The paper follows the region's economy with close attention: the winegrowers of the Tauber valley, the agricultural holdings of the Bauland, the tourism of the Romantic Road and the Tauber valley cycle path, and the medium-sized manufacturers such as the woodworking machinery industry that anchor employment in the small towns. Education, healthcare, the churches and the dense network of clubs and associations that structure social life in rural Franconia form further standing beats.

The Tauber-Zeitung edition continues the historic Bad Mergentheim title with its own local pages for the former district town and its surroundings, preserving a masthead with roots in 1791 within the FN's publishing structure. The Wertheim edition serves the northern tip of the distribution area on the Main. The paper's regional pages cover Baden-Württemberg state politics from a Tauberfranken perspective, while the national and international section, the culture pages and much of the sports coverage come from the Mannheimer Morgen. The FN's own sports reporting concentrates on the local leagues, the fencing centre of Tauberbischofsheim, and the region's handball and football clubs.

As the official publication organ of two districts and numerous municipalities, the paper carries a substantial volume of official announcements, planning notices and public tenders, a function that underlines its institutional role in the region. The family announcements, with their births, marriages and obituaries, remain among the most-read pages. The weekly advertising paper Fränkische Wochenpost, distributed free to households across Tauberfranken, complements the daily with shopping and service journalism and is a member of the Federal Association of German Advertising Papers (BDVA).

Organization and Ownership

The Fränkische Nachrichten is published by the Fränkische Nachrichten Verlags-GmbH, based in the Frankoniahaus in Tauberbischofsheim. The publishing company is 98 percent owned by the Mediengruppe Dr. Haas of Mannheim, one of the major regional media groups of south-west Germany, whose flagship title is the Mannheimer Morgen. The group's structure also encompasses the Bergsträßer Anzeiger, the Schwetzinger Zeitung with the Hockenheimer Tageszeitung, and the FN itself, forming a Rhine-Neckar regional press cluster in which the titles share a national section while maintaining independent local newsrooms.

The editor-in-chief of the Fränkische Nachrichten is Fabian Greulich, who leads the editorial staff, and the managing director is Jochen Eichelmann. The paper is a member of the Verband Südwestdeutscher Zeitungsverleger (VSZV), the association of south-west German newspaper publishers, which in turn belongs to the Federal Association of German Newspaper Publishers (BDZV). The Fränkische Wochenpost, the paper's weekly advertising sheet, is organised in the Bundesverband Deutscher Anzeigenblätter (BDVA). Financial details for the FN publishing company are not disclosed separately; the paper's operations, like those of most German regional dailies, rest on the combination of subscription revenue, local advertising and the official-notice business.

Digital Presence

The Fränkische Nachrichten has been present on the internet since 2001, when it moved to the Infopark content management system, and its portal fnweb.de is the digital home of the paper's local journalism for Tauberfranken. The site carries continuously updated local news from the Main-Tauber and Neckar-Odenwald districts, photo galleries and video reports, including coverage of regional business forums and civic events. The paper is also available as an e-paper reproducing the printed edition page for page in PDF form, serving subscribers who read the daily on tablet or desktop.

The FN maintains social media channels that extend its local reporting to younger and mobile-first readers, including presences on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn under the paper's name, where local news, event coverage and reader interaction circulate beyond the printed page. As a subscription daily, a substantial part of the digital offering is reserved for registered and paying readers, while selected local stories remain freely accessible as a shop window for the paper's journalism. The digital platform also serves the region's diaspora, the former citizens and friends of Tauberbischofsheim and the Tauber valley who follow the home region's news from afar, continuing in digital form the community-building role that the Bischemer Heimatbrief once played in print.
