About Friedberger Allgemeine

Friedberger Allgemeine

The Friedberger Allgemeine is the Friedberg local edition of the Augsburger Allgemeine, the major regional daily of Bavarian Swabia, serving the historic Wittelsbacher Land and the western Aichach-Friedberg district daily. The edition serves Friedberg and the western part of the Aichach-Friedberg district, carrying the Augsburger Allgemeine's supra-regional pages together with a dedicated local section. The Augsburger Allgemeine was first published on October 30, 1945, as the Schwäbische Landeszeitung under the initiative of Curt Frenzel, and renamed Augsburger Allgemeine on November 1, 1959. The paper belongs to the Mediengruppe Pressedruck, fully owned by the Holland family and now managed by the third generation. The paper is published in Rheinisch format. The Friedberger Allgemeine's digital home is augsburger-allgemeine.de, the portal uniting the editions. The edition's position as the Wittelsbacher Land's daily, with its Friedberg newsroom, gives it a unique role in the region's media landscape, and its local journalists ensure that the residence city's news is covered by reporters rooted in the district.

Overview

The Friedberger Allgemeine appears Monday through Saturday as a subscription daily, carrying the Augsburger Allgemeine's supra-regional pages together with a dedicated local section for Friedberg and the western Aichach-Friedberg district. The paper's Monday-to-Saturday rhythm serves the district's readers through the working week, and its local section gives the residence city and its surrounding villages the daily coverage that a metropolitan paper alone cannot provide. The paper's distribution area covers the Wittelsbacher Land, the historic territory of the Wittelsbach dynasty, centered on Friedberg, the former ducal residence city on the Lechrain.

Friedberg, the edition's home city, is one of Bavaria's most historic small cities: the former residence of the Bavarian dukes, the home of the Friedberg castle, and a city whose old town preserves the medieval and early modern heritage. The paper serves a district shaped by the Munich commuter belt, the Augsburg metropolitan area's eastern edge, and the rural Wittelsbacher Land, giving its local reporting a mix of suburban dynamism and historic identity. The district's villages, with their church towers, their farmhouses, and their local festivals, provide the paper with the rural beats that complement the residence city's urban coverage.

History

The Augsburger Allgemeine's history begins in the final months of World War II. From July 13 to October 23, 1945, the 12th US Army Group published the Augsburger Anzeiger in the American occupation zone. The paper was then handed to the German publishers Curt Frenzel and Johann Wilhelm Naumann under license number 7, and appeared from October 30, 1945, as the Schwäbische Landeszeitung, initially twice weekly due to the postwar restrictions. Frenzel had received the publishing license from Colonel Bernhard MacMahon of the US military government in Bavaria.

After Curt Frenzel's death in 1970, his daughter Ellinor Holland continued the newspaper, which had been renamed Augsburger Allgemeine on November 1, 1959. The newspaper and publishing company remain fully owned by the Holland family, now managed by the third generation. The Friedberger Allgemeine developed as the paper's local edition for Friedberg and the western Aichach-Friedberg district, serving the Wittelsbacher Land with its own local section within the Augsburger Allgemeine's publishing house. The paper's local edition structure, with the Friedberg newsroom producing the district's pages, reflects the Augsburger Allgemeine's strategy of combining the metropolitan paper's resources with the local dailies' community roots.

Coverage and Content

The Friedberger Allgemeine's local pages cover the public life of Friedberg and the western Aichach-Friedberg district in depth. Friedberg city politics forms a core beat: the city council, the mayor's office, the preservation of the old town and the castle, and the municipal budget. The paper reports on the Aichach-Friedberg district administration, covers the courts and police, and follows the regional economy with specialist knowledge: the Munich commuter belt's growth, the Augsburg metropolitan area's eastern expansion, and the Wittelsbacher Land's tourism and agriculture.

The paper covers the region's cultural life extensively: the Friedberg castle's concerts, the museums, and the festivals, alongside the sports clubs, the shooting societies, and the associations that structure community life. The paper's coverage of the Wittelsbach heritage, the castle's history, and the region's baroque churches gives the Friedberger Allgemeine specialist beats that reflect the district's unique historical profile, from the ducal residence to the present. Education, from primary schools through the Gymnasien, the emergency services, and the churches form further beats. The paper's reporters attend the city council's meetings, cover the local courts, and report from the old town and the castle, maintaining the on-the-ground presence that distinguishes a staffed local daily.

The Augsburger Allgemeine's supra-regional pages, produced by around 200 editors in the Augsburg central editorial office and 16 local editorial offices, supply national and international news, business and finance, sports, culture, and opinion. The paper maintains a broad correspondent network, with reporters in Berlin, Munich, Brussels, Geneva, Madrid, Warsaw, Paris, Vienna, London, Rome, Stockholm, Moscow, Beijing, Istanbul, Cape Town, and Washington. The paper carries the classified and display advertising, family announcements, and death notices customary in the German regional press. Reader service journalism addresses the practical questions of daily life in the Wittelsbacher Land: the commuter connections to Munich and Augsburg, the school and childcare provision, and the housing market in one of Bavaria's growing districts, alongside the profiles, interviews, and historical retrospectives that connect the paper's readers to their region's Wittelsbach heritage.

Organization and Ownership

The Friedberger Allgemeine is published as a local edition of the Augsburger Allgemeine within the Mediengruppe Pressedruck, the Augsburg-based media group fully owned by the Holland family. The paper's local newsroom in Friedberg produces the edition's local pages, while the Augsburg central editorial office supplies the supra-regional content. Financial details for the individual local editions are not disclosed separately. The paper's editorial team, rooted in the Wittelsbacher Land, produces the local pages that give the Friedberger Allgemeine its identity as the district's daily, while the Augsburg central office's 200 editors supply the national and international coverage.

The Mediengruppe Pressedruck's ownership, as one of Germany's major regional publishing houses, gives the Friedberger Allgemeine access to shared resources in printing, distribution, advertising sales, and digital technology, while the Friedberg newsroom maintains the local autonomy on which the Wittelsbacher Land's readers depend.

Digital Presence

The Friedberger Allgemeine's digital home is augsburger-allgemeine.de, the Augsburger Allgemeine's portal and one of Bavaria's most visited regional news websites. The portal carries the paper's local reporting for Friedberg and the western Aichach-Friedberg district alongside the paper's wider coverage, with continuously updated news, photo galleries, and video. The paper offers an e-paper edition reproducing the printed paper page for page, and the digital products include newsletters, breaking-news alerts, and apps for mobile devices.

As a subscription daily, much of the paper's digital content sits behind a paywall, with registered and subscribed readers accessing the full local reporting. The Friedberger Allgemeine's local journalism circulates through the group's social media channels, extending the paper's coverage of the Wittelsbacher Land to readers who encounter the paper primarily online, while the printed daily continues to serve its core subscription base in Friedberg and the western district. The digital platform ensures that the paper's reporting reaches the commuters to Munich and Augsburg, the younger readers, and the region's newcomers who form the future of the Friedberger Allgemeine's audience.
