About General-Anzeiger

General-Anzeiger

The General-Anzeiger is the daily newspaper of Rhauderfehn in East Frisia, Lower Saxony, published by the ZGO Zeitungsgruppe Ostfriesland GmbH. Founded in April 1888, it is one of the historic Generalanzeiger papers of Germany, the politically independent mass papers that emerged in the late 19th century. Appearing Monday to Saturday with a sold circulation of 6,412 copies, the paper serves the Overledingerland in the south-eastern district of Leer, the city of Papenburg in the Emsland and the adjoining communities of the Oldenburg region. Positioned as an independent, non-partisan "Fehntjer Blatt" for East Frisia, the Emsland and the Oldenburger Land, the General-Anzeiger is the journalistic voice of the East Frisian fen colonies and their neighbouring regions.

Overview

The General-Anzeiger appears Monday to Saturday as a subscription daily for the south-eastern part of East Frisia and its neighbouring regions. Its sold circulation stands at 6,412 copies (IVW 2/2026, Monday to Saturday), a decline of 41 percent since 1998 that reflects the structural pressures on the small regional dailies. The paper's distribution area covers the Overledingerland, the municipalities of Westoverledingen, Rhauderfehn and Ostrhauderfehn in the south-eastern district of Leer, the city of Papenburg in the Emsland district, and the adjoining municipalities of Apen in the Ammerland district and Barßel and Saterland in the Cloppenburg district, a region that spans the borders of East Frisia, the Emsland and the Oldenburger Land.

The readership of the General-Anzeiger is the population of the fen colonies and their neighbouring towns: the families of the Fehnsiedlungen, the shipbuilders and suppliers of Papenburg's Meyer Werft, the farmers of the moor and geest landscapes, the commuters of the Emsland and East Frisia, and the engaged citizens of the municipalities' councils, clubs and churches. The paper's self-description as a "Fehntjer Blatt" captures its identity: a paper of the fen people, rooted in the distinctive culture of the East Frisian moor colonies, independent and non-partisan, giving particular weight to local reporting on its front page and in its Overledingerland, Saterland/Barßel and region sections.

History

The General-Anzeiger was founded in April 1888, in the era of the Generalanzeiger press, the politically and denominationally independent mass newspapers that sought to win broad sections of the population as readers through the primacy of news over commentary and the emphasis on entertainment and instruction over opinion formation. The Rhauderfehn paper belongs to this tradition alongside the papers of Bonn, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Mannheim, Reutlingen, Wuppertal and Würzburg, and its name expresses the classic Generalanzeiger claim to independence and impartiality, with "Anzeiger" recalling the advertising section that financed the papers.

The modern history of the paper is defined by its integration into the Zeitungsgruppe Ostfriesland. The ZGO Zeitungsgruppe Ostfriesland GmbH was founded on 1 January 2002, emerging from the takeover of the General-Anzeiger in Rhauderfehn by the Ostfriesen-Zeitung in Leer. Until 2007 the ZGO belonged in part to the Nordwest-Zeitung of Oldenburg, a constellation that led to cartel-office proceedings over excessive market concentration; on 2 October 2007 the NW-Medien sold its holdings in the ZGO for unbundling to the group's co-partners. In October 2008 the ZGO bought the Norderneyer Badezeitung, selling the title again in July 2011; since 2009 the Ostfriesische Nachrichten of Aurich have belonged to the group as a wholly owned subsidiary, and in 2019 the ZGO took over the Borkumer Zeitung. The General-Anzeiger continues within this East Frisian media group as the daily of the Overledingerland, its editorial office in Rhauderfehn.

Coverage and Content

The General-Anzeiger gives particular weight to local reporting, which dominates its front page and its dedicated sections for the Overledingerland, Saterland/Barßel and the region. The municipal councils of Rhauderfehn, Ostrhauderfehn and Westoverledingen, the city council of Papenburg and the councils of the adjoining municipalities form a core beat, as do the district administrations of Leer, Emsland, Ammerland and Cloppenburg. The paper reports on the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, one of the region's defining employers, on the moor and agricultural economy of the fen colonies, on tourism along the Ems and in the East Frisian moorlands, and on the transport connections of the region.

The paper follows the community life of the area: the volunteer fire services, the sports clubs and their leagues, the churches and their congregations, the cultural associations and the traditional events of the fen colonies, from the moorland festivals to the maritime heritage of Papenburg. The national section of the General-Anzeiger, like that of the Ostfriesen-Zeitung and the Borkumer Zeitung, is produced by the ZGO's central editorial office at the Leer publishing site, giving the small daily the journalistic breadth of the group. Family announcements, event listings and the classified and display advertising complete the paper, making the General-Anzeiger the marketplace and the noticeboard of the Overledingerland.

Organization and Ownership

The General-Anzeiger is published by the ZGO Zeitungsgruppe Ostfriesland GmbH, headquartered in Leer, the media group that unites the East Frisian dailies. The publishers of the General-Anzeiger are Gerfried Engelberg and Mareike Engelberg, and the managing directors are Robert Dunkmann and Dr. Alexander Weinstock. Within the ZGO there is a single editor-in-chief for the group's titles, the General-Anzeiger, the Ostfriesen-Zeitung and the Borkumer Zeitung; since 1 November 2023 this has been Lars Reckermann. The editorial manager of the General-Anzeiger is Henrik Zein, in office since August 2022, and the paper's editorial office is in Rhauderfehn.

The ZGO's structure reflects the consolidation of the East Frisian press around the turn of the millennium, in which the historic independent titles were brought together under one corporate roof while maintaining their own mastheads and local editorial offices. The group's central editorial office in Leer produces the national sections for all titles, and the video editorial office Ostfriesen.tv, founded in 2008 as a subsidiary and reintegrated into the ZGO in 2021, produces video content for the titles' online presences. In 2011 the ZGO opened a daycare centre in its publishing house in Logabirum for the children of publishing employees and external families, and since 2013 the SonntagsReport has belonged to the company. Financial details for the individual titles are not disclosed separately.

Digital Presence

The General-Anzeiger is present online at ga-online.de, where the paper's local journalism for the Overledingerland and its neighbouring regions is available digitally. The website carries continuously updated local news, photo galleries and multimedia content, extending the daily's fen-country reporting to readers on desktop and mobile devices. The ZGO's video editorial office produces regional video content for the titles' online presences, giving the General-Anzeiger's digital offering a multimedia dimension beyond the printed page.

The paper offers its content digitally to subscribers, with the website providing current local news between the printed editions and the e-paper reproducing the daily page for page. As a subscription daily, much of the digital content is reserved for registered and paying readers, while selected local stories remain freely accessible. For the readers of Rhauderfehn, Papenburg and the surrounding fen communities, the digital General-Anzeiger is the online companion to the printed daily: the municipalities' news on the phone in the morning, the e-paper on the tablet in the evening, and the ga-online.de portal as the continuous news service for the Overledingerland between editions. The paper's independent, non-partisan profile as a "Fehntjer Blatt" carries over into its digital journalism, giving the fen colonies a distinctive editorial voice in the East Frisian media landscape.
