About Giesserei
Giesserei
GIESSEREI – subtitled "Die Zeitschrift für Technik, Innovation und Management" – is the monthly German trade journal for the foundry industry, published by the DVS Media GmbH in Düsseldorf and issued by the Bundesverband der Deutschen Gießerei-Industrie (BDG). Appearing monthly since 7 January 1914, the magazine is the German-speaking foundry industry's journal of record: after the market exit of its competitor Gießerei-Praxis, the only remaining specialist title for the foundry industry on the German market. With its 110+ year history, its BDG publisher and its Düsseldorf base in the Haus der Gießerei-Industrie, GIESSEREI is the monthly chronicle of the casting craft – from the mold to the management, from the simulation to the shop floor.
Overview
GIESSEREI appears monthly by subscription, published by the DVS Media GmbH in Düsseldorf; the publisher (Herausgeber) is the Bundesverband der Deutschen Gießerei-Industrie (BDG), Düsseldorf. The German Wikipedia entry documents the key data: first issue 7 January 1914, monthly frequency, editor-in-chief Martin Vogt, ISSN (print) 0016-9765, web link home-of-foundry.de. The magazine's self-description – "Die Zeitschrift für Technik, Innovation und Management" – defines its three pillars: the technology of casting, the innovation of the processes, the management of the foundries.
The target readership is the foundry industry's full value chain: the foundries themselves – the iron, steel and malleable-iron foundries with their cupolas and induction furnaces, the non-ferrous metal foundries casting aluminum, copper and zinc alloys, and the die-casting operations with their high-pressure machines; the foundry plant and machinery builders – the molding-plant, furnace and handling-equipment manufacturers; the foundries' customers – the automotive, machinery and plant-engineering buyers who specify the cast parts; the suppliers – the sand, binder, refractory and alloy providers; and the downstream processing industry – the machinists and finishers who turn the raw casting into the finished component. The BDG represents some 580–600 iron, steel and non-ferrous foundries employing around 65,000–70,000 people in Germany – one of the most important supplier industries for vehicle, machinery and plant construction.
The contents – per the Wikipedia summary – span the upstream process of construction, mold design and molding processes and materials; the simulation of the casting process; all types of casting; the finishing, post-treatment and quality management; the trainee recruitment, training and continuing education; and the operational management. The magazine also reports on specialist conferences and congresses. The regular focal points ("Specials") include twice a year the "Forschung" (research) special, reporting in short and main articles on research projects in the German-speaking region.
History
The first issue of GIESSEREI appeared on 7 January 1914 – when the Verein Deutscher Eisengießereien (VDE) gave itself a journalistic organ that exists to this day and is considered industry-leading. The magazine accompanied the German foundry industry through the 20th century's upheavals: the First World War's armaments casting, the Weimar Republic's rationalization, the Second World War's destruction, the economic miracle's industrialization – when the foundries cast the parts for the Volkswagen and the machine tools – the steel crises of the 1970s and 1980s, the reunification's integration of the East German foundries, the globalization's competitive pressure and the automotive industry's transformation – the monthly chronicle of an industry that has always been the automotive and machinery industries' indispensable supplier.
The Giesserei-Verlag GmbH – founded 25 November 1927, based at Sohnstrasse 65 in Düsseldorf, with shareholders the Verein Deutscher Giessereifachleute (VDG), the BDG and the Stahlinstitut VDEh – became the publishing house for the entire field of foundry technology: the journals GIESSEREI (the leading foundry-industry journal in the German-speaking region, monthly), GIESSEREI-ERFAHRUNGSAUSTAUSCH (the practitioners' magazine, six double issues per year, in easily understandable practice-oriented language for the decision levels), and GIESSEREI-Forschung/International Foundry Research (the BDG's international scientific journal).
The BDG itself was founded in 2008 from the fusion of the Deutscher Gießereiverband (DGV) and the Gesamtverband Deutscher Metallgießereien (GDM) – the industry association that has published the journal since, as a member of the European Foundry Association (CAEF). The Haus der Gießerei-Industrie (HdGI) – the BDG, the VDG, the BDG-Service GmbH, the VDG-Akademie and the Forschungsvereinigung Gießereitechnik, based since 2014 at Hansaallee 203 in Düsseldorf – forms the institutional home: the foundry industry's house, where the journal's editorial work is anchored.
After the market exit of the competitor Gießerei-Praxis, GIESSEREI remains the only specialist title for the foundry industry on the German market – the monopoly journal of record, with the responsibility that the position implies.
Content and Sections
The editorial program of GIESSEREI follows the casting process from the design to the delivery. Construction and mold technology covers the upstream: the casting design, the mold design and molding processes, the molding materials – the engineering that precedes the pour.
Simulation and casting processes address the core: the simulation of the casting process, all types of casting – the sand casting, the die casting, the investment casting, the centrifugal casting – the metallurgical heart of the journal.
Finishing, post-treatment and quality management cover the downstream: the fettling, the heat treatment, the surface finishing, the testing and the QM systems – the quality that the automotive customers demand.
Research and innovation – the twice-yearly "Forschung" specials – report the German-speaking region's research projects in short and main articles: the science that drives the industry's future, from the alloy development to the energy efficiency, from the emission reduction to the digital twin of the casting process – the university and institute research translated for the foundry practice.
Training, management and economics address the business: the trainee recruitment – the skilled-worker question that preoccupies the energy-intensive industry; the training and continuing education – the VDG-Akademie's programs; the operational management – the cost accounting, the energy management, the environmental compliance; the target-group-specific economics section and the "Patenbericht" (sponsor report) – the management pillar of the "Technik, Innovation und Management" subtitle, serving the foundry directors who decide on the million-euro furnace investments.
The conference and congress reports document the industry's meeting places – from the BDG events to the international foundry congresses.
Publisher and Organization
GIESSEREI is published by the DVS Media GmbH in Düsseldorf; the publisher (Herausgeber) is the Bundesverband der Deutschen Gießerei-Industrie (BDG), Düsseldorf – the 2008-founded industry association (from the DGV/GDM fusion), a member of the European Foundry Association (CAEF), representing around 580–600 foundries with some 65,000–70,000 employees. The editor-in-chief is Martin Vogt. The magazine appears monthly by subscription; the ISSN (print) is 0016-9765. The BDG's president is Clemens Küpper; the chief executive is Max Schumacher. The association is based at Hansaallee 203, 40549 Düsseldorf (the Haus der Gießerei-Industrie since 2014).
Digital Presence
The digital home of GIESSEREI is giesserei.eu – complemented by home-of-foundry.de, the web link documented in the journal's directory entry. The BDG's digital platforms – guss.de (the association's portal), the "Konstruieren + Gießen" technology portal (kug.bdguss.de, the former 1973–2008 journal's web successor for casting designers) – form the digital ecosystem around the journal. The BDG's social-media channels (LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, TikTok) carry the industry's communication into the social formats – the foundry industry's public voice, from the position papers to the skilled-trades promotion.
With its 1914 founding, its monthly rhythm, its BDG publisher, its Düsseldorf Haus der Gießerei-Industrie base and its position as the German market's only remaining foundry journal, GIESSEREI remains the journal of record of the German-speaking foundry industry – from the mold to the management, from the 1914 first issue to the digital portal, from the simulation to the shop floor, from Düsseldorf to the German-speaking foundries, "Die Zeitschrift für Technik, Innovation und Management."
