About GINX eSports TV

Overview

GINX eSports TV is a British-based television channel dedicated to competitive video gaming, known as esports, broadcasting tournaments, leagues and gaming entertainment programming to audiences in the United Kingdom and Ireland and internationally. Launched on 23 June 2016 on Sky in a venture backed by Sky and ITV, it was billed at launch as the UK and Ireland's first 24-hour esports television channel and, by reach, the largest esports television channel in the world. The channel is operated by Ginx TV Ltd from London and combines live and recorded coverage of major global esports competitions with studio-based shows, documentaries and gaming culture programming.

The channel's arrival marked the first serious attempt to bring competitive gaming to mainstream British television, backed by two of the country's biggest broadcasters. Its schedules have featured coverage of tournaments from leading esports organisers and game publishers, presented from a dedicated studio in King's Cross, London, alongside original programming made for the channel. It is distributed on the Sky platform in the UK and Ireland and to tens of millions of households internationally through partnerships with pay-television operators.

Origins as Ginx TV

The channel's roots lie in Ginx TV, an earlier videogaming television channel operated by Ginx TV Ltd. Before the 2016 relaunch, Ginx TV was available in the UK on Virgin Media channel 290, where it had built a niche audience for gaming programming. The company was led by chief executive Michiel Bakker, who positioned the channel as a specialist outlet for videogame culture at a time when competitive gaming was growing rapidly as a spectator phenomenon but had almost no presence on traditional television.

The growth of esports in the mid-2010s, with tournaments filling arenas and drawing large online audiences, created the conditions for a bigger venture. Ginx TV Ltd developed plans for a full 24-hour esports channel with broader distribution and investment, and secured the backing of Sky and ITV, two broadcasters keen to develop their understanding of the esports audience. The existing Ginx TV service was rebranded and relaunched as GINX eSports TV as part of the new venture.

Launch with Sky and ITV backing

GINX eSports TV was unveiled on 16 June 2016 and launched on Sky channel 470, in the Sports section of the Sky electronic programme guide, on 23 June 2016. The launch was a three-way partnership: Sky and ITV joined forces with Ginx TV to create the channel, and both broadcasters took minority stakes in Ginx TV Ltd to support its growth. In September 2016 Sky announced an investment of £1.55 million in Ginx TV, and ITV announced an equal investment, with ITV disclosing a 16.5 per cent stake in the company. Both broadcasters held options to acquire further holdings.

Emma Lloyd, Sky's Group Director of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships, said at the launch that the partnership would help Sky develop its understanding of esports and its audience, and that Sky was committed to bringing new channels such as GINX eSports TV to support its leadership in content. Ginx TV chief executive Michiel Bakker said the channel aimed to add significant mainstream television exposure to the fast-growing esports ecosystem, complementing online streaming with an entertainment-led approach designed to help new audiences discover esports.

Tournament coverage

The channel's schedules have been built around coverage of major esports tournaments from across the globe. At launch the announced coverage included Turner's ELEAGUE tournament, the FACEIT Esports Championship Series and Valve's The International Dota 2 championship, which the channel covered live from its new King's Cross studio. Content partners announced at launch included the game publishers Riot Games and Activision and the tournament organisers EGL and Gfinity, with further partnerships promised.

This tournament-led approach distinguishes the channel from online streaming platforms by packaging competitive gaming for a television audience, with studio presentation, highlights and analysis alongside live play. The coverage spans multiple game titles and genres, from first-person shooters and multiplayer online battle arenas to sports and fighting games, reflecting the breadth of the competitive gaming scene.

Original and studio programming

Alongside tournament coverage, GINX eSports TV produces and commissions original programming from its London base. The channel's King's Cross studio serves as the production hub for live presentation, discussion shows and magazine programming about gaming culture. Its schedules have included gaming news, reviews, documentaries about players and teams, and entertainment formats aimed at the gaming audience, giving the channel a mix of live sport-style coverage and studio-based content.

The channel has also made selected content available to Sky Q customers through the curated short-form online video section of the Sky Q electronic programme guide, extending its reach beyond the linear channel. This dual approach, linear channel plus on-demand clips, was part of the strategy to introduce esports to viewers who might not seek out dedicated gaming streams.

Ownership and corporate structure

GINX eSports TV is operated by Ginx TV Ltd, the company behind both the original Ginx TV channel and the relaunched esports service. Following the 2016 investments, Sky and ITV each held minority stakes in the company, with options to increase their holdings. The company's audited accounts for the year ended 31 December 2015, disclosed at the time of ITV's investment, reported gross assets of £0.9 million and a loss before tax of £0.7 million, reflecting the early-stage nature of the business.

The involvement of Sky and ITV gave the channel both capital and strategic backing from established broadcasters, while Ginx TV Ltd retained operational control of the channel's programming and distribution. The company has continued to develop the channel's international distribution alongside its UK and Ireland service.

International distribution

Outside the UK and Ireland, GINX eSports TV has been distributed to an additional 23 million households, which at launch made it, by the company's account, the largest esports television channel in the world with a total reach of 37 million homes. International distribution has been built through carriage agreements with pay-television platforms in multiple territories, extending the channel's tournament coverage and original programming to audiences beyond Britain.

This international footprint reflects the global nature of esports, where tournaments and audiences cross national boundaries and English-language gaming content travels readily. The channel's London production base serves both the domestic and international feeds, with scheduling adapted for different markets.

Availability in the UK

In the United Kingdom and Ireland, GINX eSports TV launched on Sky channel 470 and retained its existing position on Virgin Media channel 290, where the former Ginx TV service had been carried. The Sky launch placed the channel in the Sports section of the Sky guide, positioning esports alongside traditional sports channels and signalling its ambition to be treated as a sporting proposition.

The channel is a pay-television service carried on the Sky platform, and its programming has also been available through Sky's on-demand and short-form video offerings. Programme listings are published in the standard television guides, and the channel maintains an online presence with schedules and highlights.

Position in esports broadcasting

GINX eSports TV occupies a distinctive position as a bridge between the online world of esports streaming and traditional television. Competitive gaming grew up on streaming platforms, and the channel's proposition was to translate that content for mainstream television audiences with professional presentation, curated schedules and the distribution power of the Sky platform. Its launch was widely covered as a milestone in the mainstreaming of esports in Britain.

The backing of Sky and ITV gave the venture credibility and resources that earlier gaming channels had lacked, and its 24-hour format made it the most ambitious esports television project attempted in the UK. As competitive gaming has continued to grow, the channel has remained the principal linear television outlet for esports in Britain, serving both dedicated fans and curious newcomers.

How to watch

GINX eSports TV is available in the UK and Ireland on the Sky platform, where it launched in the Sports section of the programme guide, and on Virgin Media. Viewers can find current schedules in the Sky electronic programme guide and in standard television listings, and selected content is available through Sky's on-demand services. The channel broadcasts in English around the clock, with live tournament coverage scheduled around the global esports calendar.

For gaming fans seeking competitive play on television rather than online streams, the channel offers a curated alternative with professional presentation from its London studio. Further information about schedules and programming is available through the channel's listings on the Sky platform and its online presence.
