About Gong 97.1
Gong 97.1
Radio Gong 97.1 is Nuremberg's rock station, broadcasting "Good Time Rock" — rock music from the 1970s to today — on FM 97.1 MHz for 30-to-50-year-olds. On air since 3 December 1986 as one of Nuremberg's first four private broadcasters, the station began as a "Boulevardsender" with market leadership among young listeners before repositioning to rock. It calls itself the "Club-Sender" of 1. FC Nürnberg and at times broadcast all of the club's matches live. Since 2011 the station has belonged 100% to the Studio Gong KG. Its domain (gong971.de) is widely referenced but was not independently load-verified during research, so no official website is asserted here.
Overview
Radio Gong 97.1 is a private broadcaster on FM 97.1 MHz in the greater Nuremberg area, part of the Funkhaus Nürnberg. The "Good Time Rock" format plays predominantly rock music from the 1970s to the present, targeting 30-to-50-year-old listeners. The station's identity is closely tied to 1. FC Nürnberg: as the club's "Club-Sender" it has at times transmitted all club matches live. The managing director is Alexander Koller, programme director Marvin Fleischmann.
History
Radio Gong successfully applied for one of five terrestrial frequencies tendered on 25 July 1986, prevailing against 36 applicants, and went on air on 3 December 1986 as one of four private broadcasters in Nuremberg. The original shareholders were the Verlag "Die Abendzeitung" GmbH & Co. KG with 51% and the HFB Hörfunk- und Fernseh-Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG; in 2011 the Abendzeitung sold its share to HFB, which was later renamed Studio Gong — since when the station has belonged 100% to the Studio Gong KG. In 1995 the station moved into the Funkhaus Nürnberg alongside Hit Radio N1, Radio Charivari 98.6 and Radio F; Pirate Gong joined in 1999. Since 1 November 2012 the station has been receivable on DAB+ in the greater Nuremberg area.
The station originally called itself a "Boulevardsender" and initially held market leadership in the young-listener target group, which it later lost to Hit Radio N1 — prompting the repositioning toward "Good Time Rock" for the 30-to-50 audience.
Programming
The programme is built on rock music from five decades, framed by Nuremberg-local news, service and entertainment for the 30–50 target group. The 1. FC Nürnberg partnership gives the station a sports identity unusual among music stations: live club coverage and the "Club-Sender" self-description anchor it in Franconian football culture.
Coverage & Audience
Radio Gong 97.1 broadcasts on FM 97.1 MHz in the greater Nuremberg area, on DAB+, via cable and as a worldwide livestream. Separately published audience figures were not available in the sources consulted.
Ownership
Since 2011 Radio Gong 97.1 has belonged 100% to the Studio Gong KG (formerly HFB Hörfunk- und Fernseh-Beteiligungsgesellschaft). The station is part of the Funkhaus Nürnberg Studiobetriebs-GmbH, whose shareholders include Müller Medien, the Nürnberger Nachrichten, the Abendzeitung, Hubert Burda Media interests and other mid-sized Bavarian media companies. Studio Gong also owns the DAB+ programmes Fiesta Mania Radio (formerly Mein Lieblingsradio), N90 4 Beat and Pirate Radio.
Digital Presence
The station operates a website and livestream alongside apps and social media channels on Facebook, Instagram, X and YouTube, extending its Good Time Rock programme and 1. FC Nürnberg coverage to listeners beyond the FM footprint. The digital offering serves the rock audience with music, club content and local news on demand.
One of Five Frequencies
Radio Gong 97,1 was one of five frequencies granted on 25 July 1986 from 36 applicants in Nuremberg's first local-radio licence round — and went on air on 3 December 1986. In the early years the station targeted 20-to-40-year-olds, competing directly with Hit Radio N1, which took the lead in that segment. In 1995 Gong moved into the Funkhaus Nürnberg together with Hit Radio N1, Radio Charivari 98,6 and Radio F (Pirate Radio followed in 1999) — the shared editorial and production rooms at Ulmenstraße 52 H that made the Nuremberg local-radio alliance famous for its efficiency. Today the station plays mainly rock music from the 1970s to today, aimed at 30-to-50-year-olds: "Der Rocksender" (the rock station) for Nuremberg/Fürth/Erlangen.
Partner of the Club
Radio Gong 97,1 is an official partner of the 1. FC Nürnberg — the "Club", Franconia's biggest football institution. The partnership anchors the station in the region's sporting life: rock and football, the two passions of its core audience, under one brand. The programme concept combines local reporting, hourly news and service with classic-rock-oriented music at a 75:25 music-to-word ratio, as documented in the Funkanalyse Bayern.
The Rock Station's Dial Position
The station is received on FM 97.1 MHz in the Nuremberg/Fürth/Erlangen area, on DAB+ (Nuremberg 10C), via cable and as a worldwide livestream. National and regional advertising is marketed by Studio Gong as part of the Bayern Funkpaket. In Nuremberg's crowded dial — N1, Charivari, Radio F, Energy Nürnberg — Gong 97,1 holds the rock position: the guitar-driven alternative for Franconia's 30-to-50-year-olds, on air since December 1986.
History: One of Nuremberg's Four 1986 Pioneers
Like Charivari, Radio Gong is one of the four private radio providers that went on air in Nuremberg on 3 December 1986, after winning one of the five terrestrial frequencies tendered on 25 July 1986 against 36 applicants. Originally the partners were the Munich publisher Verlag "Die Abendzeitung" GmbH & Co. KG with 51% and the HFB Hörfunk- und Fernseh-Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG; in 2011 the Abendzeitung sold its share to HFB, which was later renamed Studio Gong — so the station has been 100% owned by the Studio Gong KG since 2011. In 1995 the station moved into the Funkhaus Nürnberg alongside Hit Radio N1, Radio Charivari 98.6 and Radio F (with Pirate Radio joining the house in 1999). Since 1 November 2012 it has also been receivable in the Greater Nuremberg area via digital radio DAB+.
Good Time Rock and the 1. FC Nürnberg
The station originally called itself a Boulevardsender and at first led the market among young radio listeners — a position it later lost to Hit Radio N1. Today Radio Gong 97.1 is "Frankens Classic Rock Sender": it plays a mix billed as "Good Time Rock", predominantly rock music from the 1970s to today, aimed at 30- to 50-year-olds. The station calls itself the club radio of the 1. FC Nürnberg and has at times transmitted all of the club's games live — a rare privilege for a private local station. The managing director is Alexander Koller, the programme director Marvin Fleischmann. Evening special programmes with rock ballads, country rock, live rock and heavy metal once rounded out the schedule, and at the Funkanalyse Bayern 2019 the station recorded its best daily reach since at least 2008 at 11.2% in its terrestrial coverage area — though later programme changes trimmed the specialist slots.
Coverage and Digital Presence
Radio Gong 97.1 broadcasts on FM 97.1 MHz from the Nuremberg television tower at Schweinau, plus DAB+, cable and a worldwide livestream with its own apps, alongside local news, traffic and weather for the Nuremberg metropolitan region. The broadcast centre is the Funkhaus Nürnberg at Ulmenstraße 52 H, 90443 Nuremberg. As a Studio Gong station it belongs to one of Bavaria's biggest local-radio marketing networks. Four decades after its launch as a tabloid station, it has found its long-term identity as Franconia's classic-rock address — and as the voice of the "Club".
