About Great! Action

Great! Action is a British free-to-air television channel devoted to action, war and western cinema, forming the high-octane wing of Narrative Entertainment UK Limited's GREAT! Network. Stylised on air as "GREAT! action", the channel screens feature films around the clock, drawing on libraries of classic and contemporary action movies, and is aimed squarely at viewers who want blockbuster-style excitement without a subscription. Broadcasting across the United Kingdom and Ireland, it is the direct successor to Sony Movies Action and, before that, Movies4Men.

The channel launched on 10 September 2019 as Sony Movies Action, replacing Movies4Men on Freeview, Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media, and was sold with the rest of Sony's UK channels to Narrative Capital in May 2021. It was first rebranded as GREAT! movies action and then, on 22 March 2023, simplified to Great! Action. On Freeview it occupies channel 62, with a one-hour timeshift, Great! Action +1, alongside it.

Unlike its sister channel Great! TV, which is built around episodic series, Great! Action is almost entirely a film channel. Its schedules are packed with action thrillers, war epics, westerns and adventure movies, punctuated only by occasional short-form interstitials. It is funded by advertising and available free-to-air, making it one of the few dedicated action-movie channels in Britain that requires no pay-TV subscription.

History: From Movies4Men to Sony Movies Action

Great! Action's lineage begins with Movies4Men, a channel dedicated to action, war and western movies as well as classic action television series, which had served the male-skewing movie audience on British television for years. On 10 September 2019, Sony Pictures Television replaced Movies4Men with Sony Movies Action, launching the new service simultaneously on Freeview, Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media.

The Sony Movies Action launch was part of a wider reshuffle of Sony's UK portfolio that day, which also saw the return of the Sony Channel in place of True Entertainment. Sony Movies Action inherited Movies4Men's audience and much of its programming philosophy, but with the backing of Sony Pictures' film library and a refreshed on-air identity.

In its early years the channel mixed films with a small amount of other programming, including short five-minute features such as Soccer Bites and movie-news bulletins, and it retained some classic action television series from the Movies4Men era. Over time, however, the schedule became devoted almost exclusively to films, and today the channel is, with the exception of brief interstitials, a round-the-clock movie service.

The Narrative Acquisition and Rebrand

On 14 May 2021, Sony Pictures Television completed the sale of its UK channels to Narrative Capital, the American investment firm, creating Narrative Entertainment UK Limited as the new operator. The deal included the movie channels Sony Movies, Sony Movies Action and Sony Movies Classic, the entertainment channel Sony Channel, and the children's channels POP, Tiny POP and POP Max.

Eleven days after the takeover, on 25 May 2021, the channels were relaunched under the GREAT! brand. Sony Movies Action became GREAT! movies action, adopting the new network's bold, exclamation-marked identity. The rebrand gave the channels a unified look for the first time and freed them from dependence on the Sony name, allowing Narrative to develop the brand across linear television, streaming and FAST platforms.

On 22 March 2023 the channel's name was simplified to Great! Action, stylised as "GREAT! action", dropping the "movies" element to sharpen its identity as the action wing of the network. The change aligned it with the naming of its sister channels and reflected the channel's mature positioning within the GREAT! Network.

Ownership: Narrative Entertainment UK

Great! Action is owned and operated by Narrative Entertainment UK Limited, which describes itself as the operator of the largest independent portfolio of free-to-air services in the UK. The company's strategy since the 2021 acquisition has centred on widening Freeview coverage for its core channels, building streaming and catch-up services that the channels previously lacked, and expanding onto connected-TV platforms.

The GREAT! Network groups its channels by genre: Great! TV for classic entertainment series, Great! Movies for mainstream films, Great! Action for action cinema, Great! Mystery for crime and mystery, and Great! Romance for romantic drama. This genre-led structure allows advertisers to target distinct audiences while giving viewers a clear map of the network's offering.

Industry reporting has credited Narrative with growing the network's share of commercial impacts — the currency of television advertising — by double digits in the years following the acquisition, with the movie channels contributing significantly to that growth through their male-skewing, film-hungry audiences.

Programming: Action, War and Western Films

Great! Action's schedule is devoted to feature films in the action, war, western and adventure genres. Its library spans classic John Wayne westerns and cult Jean-Claude Van Damme actioners — the two poles of the channel's identity as described at the launch of the GREAT! brand — through to war epics, heist thrillers, martial-arts films and contemporary action cinema.

The channel's programming draws on the film libraries available to Narrative, including titles from the Sony Pictures catalogue that formed the backbone of the Sony Movies Action era, supplemented by acquired films from other distributors. Schedules are organised in stripped blocks, with films running back-to-back through the day and into the night, and themed seasons and stunts used to mark events and anniversaries.

Apart from a handful of five-minute shorts, such as Soccer Bites and movie-news features, the channel carries no series programming, a deliberate contrast with Great! TV's series-led schedule. This film-only approach gives Great! Action one of the purest genre identities in British free-to-air television.

Brand Identity

The GREAT! action brand, introduced in its current form in March 2023, uses the network's signature bold typography and exclamation mark, rendered in a visual language tuned for impact: high-contrast graphics, explosive imagery and a tone of voice that promises entertainment "which packs a real punch", as the network's launch materials put it.

The channel's presentation leans into the iconography of action cinema — heroic poses, dramatic lighting and kinetic motion graphics — while remaining consistent with the warmer, more playful master brand shared with Great! TV and the other GREAT! channels. Idents and promos emphasise the thrill of the movies on offer, from classic westerns to cult action films.

The 2023 simplification of the name from GREAT! movies action to GREAT! action was presented as a sharpening of the channel's identity, making its genre promise unmistakable in electronic programme guides and on-screen branding.

Availability

Great! Action broadcasts free-to-air across the United Kingdom and Ireland. On Freeview it is found on channel 62, with the one-hour timeshift Great! Action +1 nearby. It is also carried on Sky's satellite service, on Virgin Media's cable platform and on Freesat, giving it broad availability to British television households.

The channel is transmitted in standard definition on satellite, cable and terrestrial platforms, with high-definition availability on Sky Glass. It is also available through the Great! Player, Narrative's streaming service, which carries live streams and on-demand content from across the GREAT! Network.

As with its sister channels, Great! Action was withdrawn from Freesat in early 2025 as part of Narrative's strategic shift towards Freeview, Sky and streaming platforms. Its presence on Freeview and Sky, the two largest television platforms in the UK, has remained constant throughout the channel's history.

Audience

Great! Action targets a predominantly male audience with an appetite for action cinema, a demographic that has historically been well served by free-to-air movie channels in Britain. Its viewers include fans of classic westerns and war films as well as younger audiences drawn to contemporary action thrillers, and the channel's back-to-back film scheduling encourages long viewing sessions.

The channel benefits from the enduring popularity of the action genre on British television, where free-to-air film channels have long punched above their weight in multichannel ratings. Its male-skewing audience is particularly valued by advertisers in categories such as automotive, gaming, beer and technology.

Within the GREAT! Network, Great! Action plays a complementary role to Great! Movies, which carries mainstream films, and Great! TV, which carries series. Together the channels allow Narrative to offer advertisers a portfolio spanning family entertainment, female-skewing romance and male-skewing action.

Digital and Streaming

Great! Action is available through the Great! Player, Narrative Entertainment's streaming home for the GREAT! channels, which offers live streams and on-demand films from the network. The player was developed after the 2021 acquisition to give the channels the streaming and catch-up presence they had previously lacked.

Narrative has also launched free ad-supported streaming (FAST) channels under the GREAT! brand on platforms including Samsung TV Plus, LG Channels, Netgem and Plex, extending the network's film offering into internet-delivered television. These services carry curated film programming alongside the linear channels' schedules.

The group's digital expansion has been presented as a central pillar of its post-acquisition strategy, with streaming presented not as a replacement for the linear channels but as a complement that captures viewing the broadcast schedule cannot.

The Channel Today

Great! Action today is one of very few dedicated action-movie channels available free-to-air in Britain, a distinctive position in a market where most genre film channels sit behind paywalls. Its lineage — from Movies4Men through Sony Movies Action to GREAT! action — reflects the consolidation of the UK's independent broadcast sector and the emergence of Narrative Entertainment as a major free-to-air operator.

With its film-only schedule, its clear genre identity and its growing digital footprint through the Great! Player and FAST platforms, the channel has settled into a sustainable niche. For viewers who want wall-to-wall action, war and western cinema without a subscription, Great! Action remains the most obvious destination on British television.
